Its not the graphics its the gameplay. Games in that era were designed with the primary goal of having the most fun and engaging gameplay. Games in this era are designed with the primary goal of having the most easily enforced monetization, irrespective of gameplay quality. Look at the rise of modern 'retro style' games, people want games that are FUN, not flashy.

A great map. Played it a lot back then. I have to LOL at you saying "facing worlds as a teenager". I was in a UT99 team back in 1999. I was 40 years old then on a DSL modem.. Fragged a bunch. Defended our flag. Ratings ranked me at 65 out of 100 back then. I've lost that skill. I've become too old. It happens. I'm ok with it.

Nothing takes me back to the turn of the millennium, like early FPS music. This is nostalgia in its purest form. Even though I never played Unreal, the sound feels dear to me and I'm in love with every soundtrack. My ex was an Unreal level designer, so I know the game through her. I love every goddamn second of these videos. Every last pixel and soundwave. It is where my mind wants to be.

well damn, that explains the last couple years of of my spotify history lol. I played the demo endlessly as a 10 year old and my god those were fun times

When I was seven (in 1997) I used to sneak downstairs early af in the morning and play Mechwarrior on my dad's chunky MacOS, then played Quake around 10-11 years old. But around 14 years old I found Unreal Tournament 2004 and my entire life was changed forever. It's crazy how music can be so deeply influential at that age. Now I live in Denver and chose here out all of the East Coast largely because of the jungle scene. Pure vibes.

Getting into pc gaming in 99 was awesome, we were getting the new wave of tech and the graphics for games started to come into their own. The music and overall attitude of everything was pretty on par to our liking. Everyone was still anxious and dreaming about what could be in the near future. UT2k4 was my favorite. The custom maps and modifications was a game changer and the community was strongly connected as a result of that. The single player/story mode was also ahead of its time. A lot of respect to the developers and higher ups!

Man, sometimes I forget songs can actually make someone happy or have an emotion. I never played Unreal tournament, nor do I hear a lot of drum and bass songs. But after studying for an exam, and realizing how....Idk, lonely or boring? My life is, these songs have such a nostalgic feeling to the point where I'm actually being a bit emotional over these. man seeing facing worlds. i remember setting up my first LAN match with it. and me and my sis being so happy. i told my clan mates i was only like 12 ish. they where so happy and proud. one even gave me his copy of diablo1. and playing tons of gods strangelove and darkmagic :( i must of sunk 10.000 hours into this damn game. because it was near all i had really i was poor. so all i could play was diablo unreal99 and doom1/2 and playing tons of doom wads i found off the web. and gaming with friends over msn chat trying to get better at unreal each night to compete in my clans tournaments. man this brought me back thanks mate.

I'm glad I brought back good memories for you! A truly magical time, no doubt! I remember on my old computer, all I had was Duke Nukem, Doom, UT, and other simpler games. This is incredibly nostalgic, I remember this map as well as Asbestos. I started with the demo UT2k3 and it only had Asbestos and another map TDM instagib and later on ICTF, we had our Belgian/ Dutch clan and roster via clanbase etc.. those memories

Oh yes ! I spent countless hours playing on this map... Over thousand probably. 'Foregone Destruction' is a timeless classic of video game soundtrack. It's probably that one track that got me into D&B / Jungle music. 🎧🎵 You could have added 'Skyward Fire' too ! 😎

Man, I love Quake and Doom, which was the first FPS I ever played. Fantastic music. I'm currently playing Quake 2. Both communities have a lot in common. Thank you for your comment, kind sir.

I wonder if kids in year 2099 will feel 90s dnb sound being hopelessly outdated and retro and grandpalike, bit like we feel whenever we hear 1920's jazz recordings made with era-specific microphones

I had never thought about it that way, wow. Retro definitely, until then the sound quality will be insane but I think dnB will be a precursor to a lot of things, just like jazz was and still is

Its no secret that alot of the producers from the 80s and 90s were fans of Jazz I mean they grew up listening to it Jazz is stylistically infused into your favorite mechanized genres from that era...house, acid house, techno, drum n bass, hardcore, freestyle, eurodance etc Jazz was the music of choice for Soviet scientists and engineers who wanted to experience the future...much the same way we listen to drum n bass when thinking about outer space and sci fi Jazz is the grandfather of drum n bass, they are family

First time I played this map I had to stop for a minute and enjoy the scenery and music.
