Sure, they carried guns and they fought, but in reality, most were not soldiers. They were farmers, ranchers, fur traders, sailors, preachers, clergy, trappers, shopkeepers, barkeeps... There was no unified national army that trained soldiers. Think about the folks drafted for Vietnam. Even as late as the 1970's, they were not soldiers. They had other professions and were picked to fight and die as needed.

Im a Brazilian, im a veterinarian and have a doctorate. Spend 6 months in N. Carolina earning good money teaching them how to raise pigs and chicken properly. USA in some aspects has still a strong grab of old ways, and those old ways don't work anymore. Great and honest people there, just very self centered. For example they couldnt believe i was Brazilian while having blonde hair and blue eyes, some thought Spanish was our mother language, etc...

They were either excused by not being taught at all or having essentially lesser to no accumulative testing to pass each grade. This is 100% on teachers. Politicians/Unions may have lowered the bar, but teachers follow it to the letter without actually caring/making efforts to change it on mass. Just a paycheck with extra vacation days to the average.

School was never my forte : fact is I was an F student for years BUT I traveled a lot with my folks and I have a natural curiosity for many, things, countries and languages. I'm now proud of the results in geography and I can speak 5 languages fluently. In other words schools and education are not always to blame for one's ignorance in many subjects : one needs to have the WILL TO LEARN.
