And no these cars don't have the couplers in the center, they're standard rail cars, they use hydraulic arms to clamp the wheels and the sides in place and flip the car over.

+Kabuki Kitsune I'll believe it when I see it dude I've watched the rotary dumpers at the keystone plant near my house, and I've worked for the railroad, I've watched them do this, they uncouple the cars, these aren't mine carts....

I've been to many rotary car dumpers across the country, and almost NONE of them de-couple the cars. They have rotary couplers.

at our plant in indiana we use this method mainly because in the winter the coal comes in on the train frozen tipping it upside down breaks all the frozen coal apart you mainly see these coal dumpers in areas were there is freezing weather

I saw a miniature one of these at Chi Town Station in Michigan. Sadly theirs wasn't work due to a broken part.

You probably wonder "How can the train still be attach if tipped over?" Well, the couplers are design to turn on these cars. So then they get unloaded the couplers and airhoses turn as the unload, keeping the train intact.

@leadfootPTM Cool vid I always wanted to see this in action.. From a past comment of yours I take it newer coal plants are using bottom dump cars?

It depends on where the coal is mined and how long the transit time is. If there is enough time for the coal to freeze in the car during transit from the mine to the unloader, then the cars will need to go through a warming house or thawing shed to thaw the coal so it will empty. Generally coal mined in Montana or Wyoming or other northern states will be loaded in rotary dump cars because transit time is a day or more and will freeze in the cars. Coal loaded and delivered in hours (besides in warmer areas) can be loaded in bottom dump cars which can be opened and closed remotely and will have little chance of freezing. Many of these trains are loaded continuously whether rotary dump or bottom dump. If the train can be unloaded without stopping then the unloading will be about the same amount of time as loading without stopping. Rotary dumping of cars was done by the Pennsy, N&W, and Virginian on the east coast in the 1930's transferring coal to ships one car at a time and those cars were regular bottom dumping hopper cars.

They should get more modern streamlined hoppers like they have in Australian

They have what's called a "rotary coupler" which stays attached to the adjacent cars.

It just seems to me, that this would be more efficient if there was a pit about three hopper lengths with a conveyor to move the coal to storage or where ever it go. This way the train could continually move very slow and have a man unlocking the hopper doors on one side and another locking them on the other. This taking one car and flipping it takes so long and a pit three car lengths would surely be long enough for a car to empty before it reaches the end of the pit, um just saying.

It would be more efficient than tipping every single hopper. They do that in the UK and I think it can be done without someone having to manually lock/unlock them.

Hey up here in PA we do this at almost every power plant dude, the reason, most of our coal is still in its raw form, the plants their own grinders. Using the bottom slides tends to jam up with our coal, and not to mention not all of it can be dumped out. Now if there's any other armchair experts from the UK or somewhere on earth where they think they know It all please feel free to ask...

Matt Patt Add to that the fact that it would take a lot longer to dump everything out through the bottom hoppers. Any idea what the time savings is exactly, Matt? (even assuming nothing jammed, how long would it take to empty the car through the bottom?)

Matt Patt sthpac69 apostleverde The main advantage to rotary dump is speed of unloading and greatly reducing the number of moving parts on the railcar (by removing the dump doors). The disadvantage is a high initial cost of a rotary unloader.

sharkheadism I love this conversation and your comment made me go to an area around town so that i could look at hoppers on the side track, and i understand what you are saying about the efficiency of spinning the car and how much that machine must cost, but i still believe that a slow moving train over a pit 3 or even 4 car lengths would allow time for a jammed hopper door to be un-jammed or stop the train for a min and side track that car over another pit . Just looking at this machine " which is really sharp i might add, the pit just seems it will work.

Also the belts run maximum capacity using this dumper so no time is wasted. A bottom dump car wouldn't save any time. The motor driving this is 100hp

What a waste of time and energy! Why dont they have cars with a hole at the botton which can be opened and shut by a switch? Would this be too complicated?

Coal does not slide that easily. It can get stuck.
