Getting rare materials from the ground into your phone is ugly. The mining industry is responsible for air and water pollution and the destruction of entire landscapes. But what if we could replace the mining industry on Earth with a clean process that can’t harm anyone? Well, we can. All we need to do is look up.

Seeing a Kurzegesagt asteroid mining game would be really cool! (With special asteroids that are the pickle and skull asteroids at the start of the video) Or, it could be something like a space-exploration game where we play as the birbs, eventually constructing giant robots (like galactaduck) a bird-based grey goo, or even constructing dyson spheres and black hole containers.

This is where Crown corporations come in (similar to state owned companies in countries outside the Commonwealth). In Canada most of the major resource and infrastructure developers started as Crown corporations because no one other than the government was willing or able to take the risk. These are also usually organised on a not-for-profit basis where, depending on the charter authorising it, any potential profits either went to reducing cost, improving service, into government coffers, or sometimes into a "legacy fund" of some sort. (Many of these were privatised in the late 80's, with a rapid decline in services and increase in cost following. Ironically, many of these are major providers of essential services so in times of strife the government still has to bail it out anyway without having the benefit of reaping the profits in good times. Air Canada is one of these former Crown corporations that were privatised and has had to be bailed out on numerous occasions.) One notable exemption to a crown corporation being made to fill a gap is several telecom companies that were privately owned but wouldn't take on the cost to provide service to remote areas unless they were granted a chartered monopoly for a given area, thereby guaranteeing a return profit. And before someone says monopolies are inherently bad, the major difference is that these are chartered monopolies they come with conditions, regulatory oversight, and can be revoked. It is likely that the country which to achieve asteroid mining first will be China because they're organised essentially like a nation sized company.

Doing something meaningful would require people to not only stop being petty, small-minded fuckwits, but also require the dismantling of decades (sometimes centuries) of archaic bureaucratic systems. planescaped I can’t disagree with you, but doing something meaningful also produces something meaningful. There’s value to it, that’s what powers the global economy, so there is an incentive for investors and politicians to get behind something for the future if the person is doing something meaningful. Fortunately, we millennials and Gen Z are the inherenters of this world. We’re bringing the fire and vigor of good old fashioned will. Let the power of youth explode. - Might Guy

It depends on what you mean by "helping the Earth". Helping poorer nations? Yes, it will help. Stopping climate change? Well, it's complicated. If there is a reasonable alternative - some current power holders will most likely switch, unless it is too expensive in the short term. But what is most likely is that current billionaires will just expand into space, while leaving the state of the earth production the same, reaping the monetary benefits from both.
