    In bootcamp we were told the leather collar was used to make it harder for the enemy to cut Marines necks

    Was told the same think when I went through P.I. in the 80s; but as a living historian I came to find that actually striking someone in the neck during battle is a difficult task; it is much easier to strike a blow to the collar bone thereby incapacitating the target and making them unable to defend themselves. They were really only worn to keep the head erect during inspection parade. Incidentally, they were despised by the men; I can tell you from personal experience that they are damned uncomfortable and hot as hell!

    @@iamwhoimnotimnotwhoiam4431 There making changes based on political ideology, not on combat effectiveness and lethality. We're able to get away with it in small scale, lopsided conflicts like OIF/OEF. However, it will cost us in the next major conventional war.

    I was almost a Marine but couldn't join due to scoliosis...but even though I didn't make it all the way in I Am still a Marine!... Semper Fi !
