Planning a stand-alone video about Smedley Butler for later this year. Wild guy with quite a history! Same thing with Dan Daley - planing a stand-along video about both men.

What were the Marines doing in any of those countries? "From the halls to Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli". What were they doing in either place? There is nothing heroic about that stuff. Read Marine general Smedley Butler's book "War is a Racket".

The reason the Marines are officially part of the Navy was that in the Constitution, Congress was allowed to "maintain" a Navy, which meant a Marine Corps could be kept and deployed indefinitely, rather than the more limited powers Congress had to "raise" armies (theoretically, given how flimsy pretenses were to raise armies in the 1800s). Was pretty useful for the 1880s to 1930s, when the Corps was basically just thugging it up on behalf of United Fruits Company, Wall Street, Standard Oil, and others. Love the Corps and my time in it, but your video glosses this part pretty hard. All the big names of this era, Daly, Butler, Pendleton, Lejeune, etc, basically cut their teeth on stomping out the victims of American imperialism and the Monroe Doctrine. US Marines gained such a fearsome reputation and so much battle experience in that era because they were just being deployed almost non-stop to the next place where brown people were getting uppity with American companies. Hawaii, the Philippines, China, Central America, the Caribbean, etc. The line "first to fight for right and freedom, and to keep our honor clean" was added in 1925 when it was officially adopted because the Corps had tarnished its reputation with brutality in all the "Banana Wars." Don't find too many stories about Marine Corps legends like Charles Merkel, the Tiger of Seibo, for example. Or the abuse of black Caribbean people by Marines that had been intentionally picked from the South by a racist Secretary of the Navy. They also don't teach you in boot camp how after he retired, Smedley Butler wrote one of the most famous anti-war books, War is a Racket.

It is funny that their "hymn" is based on a French song by Jacques Offenbach, known in English as 'The Bold Gendarmes". It is about two cowardly policemen. "Gendarmes" means "men of arms".
