Union Pacific in Afton Canyon

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

One of the most visually striking rail lines in southern California is Union Pacific's main line through Afton Canyon. East of Yermo, the railroad follows the Mojave River beneath rugged, colorful cliffs to Basin.
This video is an excerpt from our program "Union Pacific's Cima Subdivision" which is available on DVD, HD Blu-ray and digital download with Vimeo on Demand. Visit this link for more details and to order!

Pro tip for camping at Afton Canyon: Even though it seems dry, everything is going to be thoroughly soaked by dawn due to condensation as it cools. So if you are tenting, set things up as if you are going to be in heavy rain.

There is a campground in Afton Canyon near one of the rail bridges over the Mojave River. When a train comes through in the dark of night, the locomotive headlights illuminate the canyon walls brilliantly.

My brother and I used to duck hunt in the area when the rains created a temporary lake nearby. Remember walking under that overhead bridge structure just wasting a good Saturday morning when dad was out in the duck blind. Found a really cool blue crystal that I still have to this day

I enjoyed seeing the old "coded lines" (telegraph lines) as they have almost completely disappeared everywhere else. Perhaps in this very dry location, the poles will take a very long time to rot and so they may survive for a few decades more.

Been through many times in jeeps and buggies. Camped on a old mine tailings plateau on the north east end that over looks the desert towards the east. Cook a steak and watch trains coming for miles from the east. At night you can see the signal lights for many miles go on and off in sequence as the train heads east.

I'm from Switzerland and my first time in the US was in 1981/82. We bought a metallic green station wagon in SF and used it to drive across the US. One stop I remember very well was off the Interstate between LA and Las Vegas - Afton Canyon. They had a campground there and we spent two or three nights there being the only guests. I remember the rail line and an Amtrak passenger train that went by. Cute video and a good approach to also show the scenery a bit, not just the trains. It's a wonderful place.

I was an AMT engineer out of LAUPT. I ran the Desert Wind trains, 36/36 LA to Las Vegas. It was the best road job I ever had. It was a fast run LA to Vegas. In October 1988, I got run off the mainline by the 3519 West. He pissed away his air and lost a 12,000 to port ash train going to the Port of Long Beach. The engineer gets me on the radio and wanted to know where I was at. I told him I was at Kelso and she had me lined into the hole at Hayden. He comes back and tells me to "shake it" cause he's not going to make! We got in the clear and here he comes down the mountain, 60/70 mph in emergency, sparks from to back, pinwheels. After that, off to Vegas.

Before the demise of the Wind, I was working in LA and enjoyed an overnight turn on the Wind between Pomona and Milford, UT. Darkness prevented seeing much beyond Las Vegas, but I can say I rode the line that far. Staying awake in Milford for the layover was a bit of a challenge--no coffee shop, no bar, nothing.... Not even a freight to rattle things a little. Oh, but it did snow for about 30 minutes.

@@glennfoster2423 It's to bad you couldn't see anything. The desert has a beauty all its own. South of the main line is the Devil's Playground, at around Sands. It never looks the same day to day. F4 Phantoms from Nellis AFB would buzz the train all the time. They would be about 100-200 yards away at almost train level!, Awesome sight and sound! coming up from behind us, what a treat.

There are many places to film Cima sub if you go off road. For 4WD: the river depth frequently exceeds 24 inches, so other than a few models of jeeps, there arent many stock vehicles which are going to make it across without getting water in the axles. However, a stock 4wd with a high clearance package can take you the whole length of the mojave road on either side of the river as long as you have the right tires. Do not go on the road with ordinary passenger tires! You need a on/off road tread minimum.
