Union Castle Liners

This film is made up of the best of the film I have of Union Castle Line ships.
The line was formed in February 1900 by an amalgamation of the Union Steam Ship Co Ltd with the Castle Mail Packet Co Ltd.
By the beginning of the post war period in 1945, the line was the second largest British Passenger ship line.
In this film we see some of the liners which plied their trade between England and South African ports and also around Africa via the Suez Canal Most of the film was taken in the early fifties up to the time when the service was withdrawn in 1977.
I start with a series of stills all taken by Chris Rabone a member of the Purser’s staff. Chris and his wife Alison who was also at sea and who was related to me by marriage, have both since died and I dedicate this film to their memory.
The stills form the introduction, the remainder being old cine film converted to digital.

Windsor Castle was layed up in the Fal in the late 90's. She still looked well maintained then, as I recall.

Still remember crossing the equator on the Edinburgh castle as a child, 1974 I think. Think there might have been a smaller celebration for the tropics. Have a photo of me cuddling a lion cub on board at some point during the journey (possibly on arrival in Cape Town), but crew might remember if this cub was onboard during the journey. I won the children's disco dancing competition much to my sisters disappointment as she fancied her chances. Not that I could dance. Quite a lot of fun for a child. Pity those that never got to experience emigrating like this.

So you emigrated southbound? I emigrated northbound in May 1974. Cape Town to Southampton. I really enjoyed my time on the ship.

Is that Union Steamship Company Ltd (NZ) or was the company registered in the U.K hence the red funnel markings of USSCo minus the 2 black stripes as part of it's amalgamation with the consortium?

It's the UK-registered company. They served the Africa routes from Southampton, the most famous being the route to South Africa. IIRC, Union-Castle Lines ceased to exist in the 1980s
