Could the 15 decade rosary be meant to pray the traditional full rosary, without the Luminous mysteries?

I went to day a retreat at St Michael Abby. The topic the priest chose was about the rosary and mentioned the rosary was originally meant to be prayed the 15 decades. He also had a 15 decade rosary. I’ve been looking for one since 📿

I think the black 7 decade rosary is a Franciscan rosary which focuses on the 7 Joys of Our Lady. The Holy Land Crucifix has soil from the Garden of Gethsemane at the base, stone from Jesus' tomb on one arm, on the other are crushed rose petals from the Garden of Gethsemane, and at the top is incense from the Tomb in Jerusalem.

Black rosay at 4:30 is a Franciscan Crown or Seraphic Rosary. This rosary consiss of seven decades in commemoration of the Seven Joys of the Virgin Mary. The decades are the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity of Jesus, the Adoration of the Magi, the Finding in the Temple, the Resurrection of Jesus, and then the Assumption of Mary and her Coronation.

I think the 5 decade rosary with the medal of the face of Jesus is the Chaplet of the Holy Face of Jesus. It's meant to honor the 5 wounds of Jesus. The 7 decade rosary might be the Franciscan Crown Rosary. It's also called the Seven Sorrows Rosary. I have one, but the Our Father beads are tiny paintings of each of the seven sorrows of Mary. Can't wait to find out more about all these!

My mom brought me back a wooden souvenir from Jerusalem that had vials of water, gravel, and dried leaves, just like the ones on the Crucifix. I always assumed they were just mementos of the Holy Land. There may be some symbolic significance that I’m not aware of.

This was such a fun video to watch and I can’t wait to see these mysteries solved! The crucifix with the churches - these are probably the major churches of Rome: St. Peter’s Basilica, St. Mary Major (Maggiore), St. John Lateran, and St. Paul Outside the Walls. I have a rosary from Rome that has these as the Our Father beads. For the olive wood cross, you may find some information by searching Holy Land olive wood crosses online. Good luck!

The olive wood crucifixes are sometimes made from 14 separate pieces of olive wood to represent the 14 stations of the cross (is that one made from multiple pieces). And the inserts are usually things from the holy land. Usually there is one with soil from the Holy Land. I am trying to remember the others. I think once is olive leaves and one is incense, maybe? And usually stones from the holy land, I think.

  • @catholicmomanddaughter

That is very interesting! But it looks like ours is not 14 pieces of wood (that would be really cool if it was). Olive leaves sounds right for the top compartment--- now we are thinking the pink stuff may be incense? It is definitely not from a flower- too hard

What an interesting video and interesting objects you showed. I think the 7 decade one is the seven sorrows of mary rosary. I have seen it before. Please do a follow up video with what contributions you received. I do know someone who works in St Louis Univ. Will check about the librarian priest. I bought on etsy a "relic" (really bought it for the nice antique medal, from st Louis Monforr. I was curious that it is like a chamber that when you open it it has a red waxy solidified oiled gel like (no idea how else to describe it). If anyone knows about it, let me know.

A "7 Sorrows " Rosary has 7 decades of 7 beads each. A Franciscan Crown has 7 decades of 10 beads each, with praying an additional 2 Hail Marys to commemorate the 72 years Blessed Mother was among us. They ARE different from each other and not to be confused.

I believe the small red Rosary is possibly the Chaplet of the Holy Face? The black one definitely looks to be a Dolores Rosary (Seven Sorrows of our Lady) and the 15 decade is just the complete mysteries of the Rosary (Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious) before the Luminous Mysteries were introduced. The top picture on the Crucifix is definitely the prodical son. Really neat items! God bless you, ladies! ❤

The Chaplet of the Holy Face seems like the best possibility for that one. We are going to investigate that lead more. If it is, it should have a pardon crucifix (from what we've now read)- so now we have to check that!

9:41 Since it comes from Rome and for the 2000 jubilee. I think the churches in the back show the 4 major papal basilicas: Saint John of Lateran, Saint Peter, Saint Paul Outside the Walls and Santa Maria Maggiore. :)

I made some research. And found very interesting things :). It looks like a 5-way pectoral cross. The one for other jubilees showed different symbols. But I guess in this one, they could be related to JPII pilgrimage to Holy Land in March 2000. Due to the jubilee. He began in Mount Nebo (God Father promise Moses he would see Holy Land). He also visited the Annunciation Basilica. The Cenacle. And Christs Baptism place. Just a guess. Maybe it has to do with that. :)

  • @87FM39

    @87FM39

And one more thing, in that jubilee the indulgences could be either obtained visiting those 4 churches in Rome or some other churches in Holy Land. Including the Annunciation Basilica.

Yes, I do have the commemorative rosary for St. John Paul 2. I am not 100% sure where I got it, but my guess is it came in the mail as an offering. I don't shop for rosaries so I am sure I did not go out to buy it myself. I actually had mine touched to a relic of St. Padre Pio, so I am hoping that mine is now a 3rd class relic? I am using it and touching it, so I hope I have not done something wrong? I think I do have a couple of mysteries of my own. When I have time, I will look for them.

For the fancy crucifix the four containers hold frankincense, myrrh, ston, and, dirt from the Holy Land (I don’t remember where). For the 15 decade rosary it was made before St. John Paul II instituted the Luminous mysteries so it is a complete rosary of the Joyful, Sorrowful, and glorious mysteries.
