Uniaxial tensile test with Digital Image Correlation (DIC)

Uniaxial tensile test on a stainless steel sample, ASTM E8. The contour plot of the longitudinal strain is obtained through Digital Image Correlation (DIC). The plot shows engineering and true stress-strain responses.

How do you calculate true stress and true strain ? Are they estimated from the elongation or the width reduction of the specimen ?

Greetings, Could you please point out the set up, more specifically, the camera and software used please! THANKS A LOT !

Two stereo 5 MP cameras (Basler), equipped with Schneider Kreuznach Xenoplan lenses (focal length 35 mm). The images were captured using Vic-Snap (Correlated Solutions) and were post-processed on Vic-3D (Correlated Solutions).

Hello Dear, I would like to ask one question. Strain very much depends on extensometer size and position.so we can see that using same sample but different location or extensometer length we can have different value. Could you please give some comments of using DIC to not underestimate or overestimate strain value. Don't you think we should use strain from neck?

Most of the metals and alloys exhibit uniform elongation, during which the strain is uniform along the gauge part and an extensometer does not underestimate the strain value.

@@sigao9751 it is true until necking onset. During necking evolution, either stresses and strain are not uniform along the gauge length and the stress state on the necking section is triaxial. Then, true stress from elongation is useless after necking incepts

I am absolutely agree. The evaluation of strains from width reduction (or diameter reduction) is the correct way after the necking onset. Correct.
