UNI-T UT210E clamp meter overview

Ғылым және технология

I bought a UNI-T UT210E clamp meter as I needed to check the current being drawn by a suspected duff fuel pump in my Defender. A clamp meter allows you to check the current being drawn by an electrical circuit without having to cut wires and insert a meter in series with the cut cable. A real time saver and potentially (no pun intended) safer. The accuracy at very low current is not great but for the day to day checking I do it is a fine, well but meter.
This video gives a very brief invite to the meter and a few tests are performed as well as some of the useful functions explained.
I bought mine from Amazon and at the time it cost about £35 although it appears they are a little cheaper at the moment. They are also available fromBanggood. Links below.

You were 100% right about coating/oxidization on probes. I have that problem on meter leads and brand new two way radio batteries on charger contacts , they look fine but have an "invisible" coating on them. I did to these leads what I have done for years and years (I'm old) I rub them with a slight abrasive . I use Crest regular old fashion PASTE toothpaste , has a tiny bit of pumice in it . Put a small dab on thumb and forefinger and rub , then wipe off make a HUGE difference , continuity taste is immediate .

Hi cups3 thanks for the feed back. Good to know. I might try the toothpaste trick! Swapping the leads to gold plated ones could be another way to go though not as cheap. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

Just a quick note, to let you know that electrolytic capacitors have a wide value tolerance usually +20% to - 10% of the marked value. It's usually marked on the side of the caps.

Hi Pidgeonplucker, thanks for your comments. Yes you're right I should have mentioned that when I was testing. Thanks for the reminder and for watching 👍🏽

The way you measuring Capacitors is not entirely correct. You are gripping both the probes, making your body a resistor in parallel over the capacitor. Better is to only grab the negative probe with one lead of the capacitor, and hold the positive only on the plastic, and hold the metal tip against the other leg of the capacitor.

Hi Victor and thanks for your comments. Yes you are entirely correct. I’ve just reviewed my video and I surprised myself I measured the caps that way! I shall be more careful next time. Thanks again, Mike.

This exact meter was recommended by Mike over at Britannica Restoration. If you don't know about his channel it is worth a look as you said you owned a Land Rover. I was going to get this meter on Mike's recommendation and you have more than confirmed it.

Hi Harvey. I've been helped by a few of Mikes videos but not seen the one with the meter. As I said in my video I have found it very useful and it can been seen in use in one of the Defender "Step" videos. I think you will find the meter a great addition to your tool setup, thanks for watching 👍🏽

I had been looking for something like this for some time but prices put me off; esp for the infrequent use I expected to use it. I bought one of these immediately after seeing that video - primarily for the 2 amp DC ability.

One thing I can't get my head around .I used this to check amperage in my meter box at the safety switch .It showed I was drawing 2.5 amps on a circuit that I knows carries a lot of power points and appliances ,the dishwasher was on, one of my computers was on, the coffee machine was plugged in at idle, yet it showed 2.5 amps ?

It could be right. The computer could draw 30-50watts (depends if it's a gaming machine or not) and the dishwasher could have just been pumping water around that had already been heated but before you started to measure. The coffee machine on idle would only have been a couple of watts. Stick an electric kettle on the same circuit and boil water. I'd expect to see another 2200watts (9amps ish on a 240v supply)

Uni-t are a good brand They have made a big inprestion in the UK and Europe, all my test instruments are uni-t Exsept for my MFT with ia a ROBIN KTS 1620, I have a uni-t clamp meter a uni-t voltage indicator and a uni-t multy meter I have been using this brend for seven years and I have never had any problems with them, why pay hundreds of pounds /dollars for the likes of fluke mega kewtech and many others when you can get just as good for a fraction of the price from UNI-T

Hi Sean, thanks for your comments. I very much agree with you, I think the Uni-T brand is a very under estimated brand. The build quality is super and accuracy more than I need. If and when I need another meter I will certainly be looking at this brand. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

Hi S8 hau. I guess it depends on what your particular measurement requirements are. The 210E was better for me this time. Thanks for watching 👍🏽
