After getting my first taste of Iranian cuisine, my new friends and I headed off to explore the Grand Bazaar in Tehran, Iran! Come along with us as we check out this incredible place!
The market is huge and sells just about everything you can imagine, including clothing, kitchenware, carpets, food, and more. We found a shop that sells kitchen supplies, including wooden honey stirrers and some small kebab skewers. I bought them both for roughly $3 USD.

Mr. Taster is a local celebrity, so he gets stopped everywhere. This bazaar reminded me of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, but the colors on the ceiling were similar to the ones I saw in Uzbekistan, with the blues and yellows, and Islamic architecture and intricate designs.
We took a left and arrived in the Timcheh-e Hajeb-od-Dowleh, which is a courtyard where you’ll find lots of shops. You can bargain and negociate here!
Further on, we found copper saffron grinders, copper trays, tea cups, jars, vases, and more. I bought a saffron grinder before heading to get something to eat.
We found a vendor selling juicy and meaty dried apricot, sour and juicy yellow apricots, and delicious walnuts.
Further on, we found a jewelry market, where we found some gold and silver jewelry on our way to the restaurant. There, we’d be having a rice cake dish called tahchin.
In the kitchen, we saw them cooking lamb chops, kubideh, and lamb kebabs as well as chicken. They put a huge slab of the tahchin on top of the chicken and rice. The kebabs come out charred and crispy, and then they drench them in butter!
Next, we headed to another kitchen on the fourth floor, where they were making the tahchin. They put the rice in huge trays and drown it in a mixture of butter, egg, saffron, and yogurt. It becomes bright yellow and they flatten and press it in the pan before slicing it. Then it bakes for 20 minutes!
From there, we also saw them making kebabs and chicken before heading down to the open-air dining hall to eat. The tahchin looks like cornbread, but they top it with more rice, barberry, and pistachios. Underneath is chicken, eggplant, and rice.
You take a bit of chicken, rice, barberry, and tahchin. It was a nice mix of crispy tahchin, sweet eggplant, and juicy chicken. The tahchin was also moist and fluffy! The roasted eggplant was incredible, but the serving was so huge and filling!
Next, we jumped on Iran’s most famous stew, ghormeh sabzi, which contains red beans, lime, and lemon. It looked so dark, thick, and rich. You can have it with yogurt or onion. We poured it over the tahchin!
I loved the rich flavors of the lamb, green onion, lime, parsley, fenugreek, and kidney beans. Iran is the land of stews, and this one was unreal! I could have eaten it by itself!
Next were a lamb shank and bogali polow. The bogali polow contained saffron and dill. You break up the lamb shank and mix it with the pulao. It’s so fatty and unreal. The herbal flavor of the pulao blew my mind!
We finished with sholeh zard, a pudding made from rice, saffron, cinnamon, rose, and pistachios. It was spectacular and moist, but I was about to pop! Then, we headed to Taj Ali Darvish Tea House, the smallest teahouse in the world. It really is tiny and has been in business since 1918!
The owner gave me a special coin and served us a mint lemon saffron tea and Persian tea with rock candy and sugar cubes. You put the sugar cube in your mouth and sip the tea. The sugar dissolves and makes it super sweet. I loved the tea! What a tour!

@@Davidsbeenhere I enjoyed see ing the war the generosity and wanting everyone to sample your food which is totally incredible the last video I watched was with Mr taster and you ate some of the most exciting looking lamb dishes I've ever seen and the rice oh please it was so good looking. I lost my leg to cancer so I can't travel right now but you and Mr taster show me the beautiful countries and the wonderful food and this is very important to me right now makes me happy I missed your taste just left makes me happy. I am an American and I find the food in this country it's kind of mundane it took other countries to move here and introduce us to some of the most fantastic taste and our taste bud said whoa what is going on so this is a great thing many many Indian restaurants I've opened up in the last 10 years even more so now. Even down the shore where I live has a Vietnamese restaurant and that is so cool because I've seen lots of dishes presented on KZread that you should not be afraid to try thank you David thank you Mr taster you have given me great pleasure peace

I spent my childhood with gently competing Persian ladies who hosted cultural/religious dinners. This takes me back. (Aside from some tangled code - the real significance to me means more) If you like rice dishes and layered flavors, you cannot do better. Such beautiful hosts. The real people.

I’ve encountered more warmth, kindness and boundless hospitality from strangers travelling in Iran (and most parts of the Middle East, Africa and South Asia) than anything I’ve ever experienced travelling in Europe and North America (or for that matter my own home country of Australia)
You make all these middle eastern countries look so positive David! Its very refreshing to see this side of countries you would not easily visit. Thank you for this. The people of Iran are so lovely!!!
This was really lovely to watch and to see you all having fun and laughing heaps. The Mr Taster is so wonderful. Thank you for sharing.💖💖

Tachine (sic) look so good. I’m familiar with the dish and how much Iranians love it. Unfortunately, I don’t think they’re available outside of California, specially LA. I’ve never heard or known Iranians to live in large numbers where I live. That said, I’ve eaten Iranian food during my visits to the Middle East. Chelo Kebab is one dish that comes to mind first when I think about their cuisine.

Dill is a great herb. It is what makes Spanakoipita (Greek spinach and feta cheese pie with filo pastry) taste so good. Dill weed sprinkled over a salad even packs that basic salad with vinagrette, oil and vinegar or Italian dressing dressing with flavor and punches it up to a new level. Saffron is special though. It is a must in any kind of paella.

Good morning David: where do I start? Let's see. As for the market, how do you choose what to buy? So much to see. Next, the food. WOW, everything looks so delicious and appetizing. That's the best way to enjoy fine dining without doing fine dining, if you know what I mean. Next, Mr. Taster is out of this world - the way he fed you like a child - so caring. He is deliriously hilarious. He just beat Carlos 😄😄😄. I am really, really enjoying these videos. Sometimes I have to stop for awhile because I laughed so hard that my jaw hurt. Brandon was right yesterday when he said that we would really enjoy this series. I am prepared for the laughter and I can wait to see tomorrow's episode. WOW!!! Keep them coming. I have watched other food vloggers but nothing compares to what you do especially with culture and history of the places you visit. Keep it up. Blessings as usual 🇹🇹🇨🇦🙏🕊️

I am so jealous of you right now. I was taught how to make Gormeh Sabzi in 1977 from a group of Iranian military students here in Mississippi. I haven't made it in a long time. I'm going to get the ingredients and make it for my daughter and 4 grandsons. My daughters father is Iranian and has never met her. He had to go back to Iran after his training was over. There's so many children from the 70s from Iranian men that were left here in the USA. It's sad.

Iranian food seems so tasty and delightful, yet it's relatively an unknown cuisine in North America. More Iranian-born chefs need to migrate here so that the masses can sample their amazing recipes, instead of driving for Uber or some other non-food jobs.
@rostamyazata991

It’s quite known in California though, as well as in Canada in cities where there are big Iranian communities such as Toronto yet I agree it could be even more famous in the rest of North America as well in the world in general

Great sentiment until the last sentence. I don't see a problem with people driving for Uber. But a more realistic view is that the CEO of Uber is also Iranian. Only focusing on the drivers doesn't give a realistic picture of what Iranians, as one of the most successful minorities, do in the US.
