I work for a small estate sale company. This is real. Lots of folks, at some point, loose control of their house. Either through age, divorce, spouse’s death or stress. Some folks just have the “home shopping network” illness. We have family members say that have tried to help, but are unsuccessful. Saying goodbye to things is really hard for a lot of people. Overconsumption of cookware, fancy serving ware, purses, shoes, makeup, towels and linen, cheap tools, and well intentioned cleaning products are big culprits.

One of my favourite things about a vacation is staying at a hotel. I love it for all the reasons you stated. Years ago I didn’t realize why but now I see that I just love the minimal feel of it. I love that I only have so many clothes, belongings, etc. There is minimal decor and everything that is there has a purpose. There is no over abundance of anything. As I’ve gotten older I understand that one of the biggest sources of my anxiety is all of the visual clutter. Sometimes I can’t sleep at night because all I’m thinking about is what I need to do in my home to feel better. It’s a journey I’ve begun and although it’s moving slow because of my poor health I still am going in the right direction.🥰

You can do it! One small area at a time! Something I've learned is to take a "before" picture of whatever area (drawer, closet, table top, cabinet, etc) you decide to tackle, then take an "after" picture. Looking at the pictures when you're done is such a wonderful feeling of accomplishment! You don't realize what a huge step you've taken until you compare the pictures, and it motivates me to start on the next area.

It just tickled me. Homes being so cluttered you can't find them. 🤣
Great video!! The only point I want to make is that all the people I know from the Depression are way LESS cluttered, because they never buy things they don't need and they keep using/repurposing items, instead of replacing them. These people tend to have very tidy, sparse surroundings and hate to spend money on anything useless or frivolous. This is an EXCELLENT video, thanks so much for your content!!!
When I started to declutter, I jumped right in! Then I replaced half of the stuff. I then decided to make better decisions. I knew what was no longer of value, anything I was unsure of I put in a box. If I took it out in a reasonable amount of time I kept it, if I didn’t even look for it, I taped the box and dropped it off at the reuse. Another method I found helpful was to put little sticky dots on things. I wrote the date I put them on, then made my decision based on time.

Robyn, you are so right, even though I have been on the minimalist journey for years, there are still times when things get out of hand. I cannot function in chaos. I am stifled. Until things are back in order, put away, I can finally feel myself again. My worst times are changing Christmas decor, changing seasonal clothes, or in progress projects. That last couple sentences .. SAME THING my brother and I have said recently!!
I have hoarding tendencies. So once every two years I get rid of a lot of stuff that in closets or drawers that I haven't used. If I start letting anything get messy, i stop and make myself do the right thing. My living space has never hoarded but I keep myself aware it easily could. This year is get rid of it year. So many bad things have happened, but I'm getting it done very slowly. I know I will benefit later so I force myself through the pain. Just do it, because you will thank yourself

This video has helped me a lot. I go through giving up decluttering as I don't know where to start as I have so much stuff. I lost three people in three years which made my clutter habit so much worse. Getting rid of my mom's and my fiance's things has been really hard. I have gotten motivated to declutter as I am losing things and tripping over things. Your video helped me to start the process. Explaining how it happens helped a lot. Thanks!!!!
I don’t have kids or toys but am in my 60’s and have general accumulation. A few years ago I made a goal to get rid of one thing a day. I even kept a log of what it was on what date. If I happened on 5 things in one day that counted for 5 days. I can get overwhelmed easily so this trick only took a few minutes each day, plus writing it down and seeing my progress gave a tangible sense of accomplishment. At that time it was things to donate or throw out. I’m at a point where I have unneeded things of more value, so I’m putting them in a place for a future tag sale. In retirement I plan to start reselling things of greater value online.
One thing is stop blaming yourself for everything. Part of the clutter is also the family not helping in the house, but expecting you to do it all. Which is not fair. Leaving messes in places you just cleaned out, being reckless and thoughtless and all these little wars they start fight with you constantly. It's not all the women that must be accused.
Omg I'm dealing with this right now. I'm currently living with my mother because of circumstances in a basement room for storage. I've been trying to tidy up forever and everything you have stated is spot on. It's incredible and I want to sleep, but am trying to press on. Thank you for making me feel a semblance of sanity.
Things I remind myself. “Clutter is the manifestation of the CHAOS in your mind.” - unknown & Everything should have a place. Yet I still have everything on the floor
Great info ! Just the words clutter , declutter & minimalist may sound negative to people who need fewer possessions ; perhaps using the words simplify & organize & donate will inspire more positive motivational feelings .
Good video, helped me think about my clutter. I need to declutter but have been overwhelmed by it and didnt know where to start. This is me😳. I’m starting to see the light✌️🙏✌️
I'm an artist who does stained glass, fused glass, mosaic, collage , crochet and and and. I'm overwhelmed by supplies and potential supplies. I hate to let go of anything because it could be used in a future project. Then there's the well meaning people who give me their broken dishes or art supplies they no longer use. I futilely try to organize these things but forget it! It's an impossible task. I hate chaos but creativity seems to breed it.
All your points are great. Like the other You Tube minimalist, the homes are always modern, or farmhouse ish , empty and have little personality . They look like furniture showrooms.
What happens to the people that all of a sudden are living on less than $400. a month Social Security and they look around at things that their family has all laughed when they died and they realize that I might need that coat I might need that pair of shoes I might need that blanket so they keep more than they probably should and it’s clutter but they’re scared to death to offload something they might need because they know they’ll never be able to purchase it again I have a friend and you can barely go through her house and that is exactly why she is underfunded she is ill she is a senior she cannot work and her Social Security is down right scary it’s not enough and so this is her predicament
Guilty as charged... Holding on to the "Past" eliminates making room for the future. Setting up deadlines to eliminate my storage units is a must. I have 2 storage units now. Had seven a year ago.

Easier to keep clean and neat as an empty nester..and downsized, too. I consider cleaning a form of exercise....lol...but super fast in a 750 sf co op now.

I have started with stuff that is easier like clothes to sell or give away. its great. i never miss stuff that i sell or give away. its just hard getting there.

Thank you Tamshin!
Love your videos. Clutter affects women way more. Not saying it doesn't affect men at all.
Great info and I love the way you present it. You are motivating and non-judgemental which is SO important. Thanks!
Excellent video, new subscriber. Looking forward to binge watching. Thx! I'm afraid to tell my pulmonologist how much clutter and years of dust I live in 😬 (don't ask, don't tell). She did run an allergen panel and it was positive for grasses and a couple trees but dust/dust mites were not included in the test. I have been diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans (rare) and have a followup CT scan next month for a solid right upper lobe lung nodule. I'm on supplemental oxygen at night. So I guess decluttering and cleaning my apartment should be a no-brainer. But it's a vicious cycle when you're old, with a lot of medical problems, including ADHD, and live alone . . .
I’m very very overwhelmed today God help me

Thank I have been working on declutering, and organizing. I don't believe that I have so much stuff, I don't have an atic, a basement, storage area, no office, and no garage. we are a family of 4 in a small apartment with 2 bedrooms 1. bathroom. So everything we have has to stay here. If I have any minimal decisions, have no were to store. Yes, I have ever thing you listed. My family and my health is very important. Yes, I have many crazy mental reasons for my clutter (which like I said 😢claims I don't have.) I have hoarder thing that make me feel happy, in control, of what happens at least to my stuff, my junk, because I have no control over my declining health. Because I truly trust you , one of My KZread Best Friends ,I will continue to Try to decluter in small steps. You, Miss Horder, Case, and a few other are helping me. One which will remain name less is putting fire on my feet, she has helped me the most, my spiritual daughter❣️

Me too. My family will always know when I’m upset. 😅
Quite honestly, I have never been in ahotel room and sighed in relief because it wasn't cluttered. I also took a psych test and I test as only 4% for neuroticism. I want to declutter because #1. I have trouble finding things when I need them; #2. I like the way my home looks when it isn't cluttered; #3. constant clutter makes my home less useable. #4. We're making repairs to the house and the clutter is in the way.
So good. Love all the information on ADHD, etc. that you teach us in your videos because that helps us know why we might be holding on to things. 👍

U described my feelings exactly!
I live and work in 500 sq with huge amounts of equipment. I mean-my emotions are fine cause my bills are so low.
Thank you so much. I never made a connecction between clutter and behavior patterns 😮
Nice job.. I shall have to watch another 😃
Great video, thanks for your insight. For the decluttering process and especially the questions to ask, I like Dana K White's approach. I highly recommend it! Let's fight clutter and regain our health! ❤
Excellent advice
I am already well along my minimalism journey but trying to bring my mum on board who has just put herself in the hospital she's so stressed, trying to encourage my mum to join the club so these studies to help her science brain understand i am not just trying to make her throw everything out is great!

You’re kind
Make everyone to clean up their messes snd to work together to clean up the house. That is the best way to prevent clutter yo accumulate, and collect and release every 6 month what you do not use.
Love how you think…great ideas! 💜
