    The P2 is beautiful, but of the 3 engines you were running, I will say I REALLY liked the Fowler 4F 0-6-0 the most given that it ran the best, and has the most character and charm of the 3. Thinking of getting a TTS Sound Fowler 4F myself to replace my old tender driven one. :)

    There are actually two p2s being built now, a streamlined version of cock o the north and the new build prince of wales, a great running session as usual mate, I have the railroad model and the only big difference between them is the enhanced livery on the premium one, so you're right to call it a ripoff. I agree about you being so badly ripped off with that thing. I would have been reduced to tears myself, if I'd been ripped off with an expensive model bought for me. Happily, I've never been ripped off once so far. But, as you wisely say, let's not tempt fate. I loved watching the TTS 4F and Gadwall a lot more, because you weren't ripped off with those. Of all the TTS engines you have, the TTS Hornby Castle Class engine is my favourite. You should show her off more often. I like her.

    Bit late to the P2 party, but saw you had one in the background of another review. I got one of these posh ones without sound when they were first introduced. I'd wanted a P2 in RTR form for about 35 years after discovering their existence on a mate's older brother's collection of cigarette cards. Its a great shame its introduction coincided with Hornby's new design clever experiment to make the moulding process cheaper and therefore reduce parts count. What really irked me though was the lack of a detailed cab, it being no better than a retro Tri-ang Hornby loco of the 1960s. I contribute monthly towards the new P2 build, so will have to have a look at that one when complete, and paint the cab to suit. The first thing I picked up upon (quite literally) was the loco weighed a ton (good) and the only place to pick it up is the running plate centrally above the driving wheels. The running plate is not diecast as it should be but plastic. It bowed very noticeably taking the weight (bad). Did you notice that ? Hornby had chosen my all time favourite loco to make more toy like; gutted. Anyway, once on the track and moving, it looks the dogs dodahs. Very surprised to hear it only has a 3-pole motor. Now for its party piece which you sort of hinted at but need to test. Hornby Magazine reported when they reviewed it, that it was capable of pulling 40+ carriages for real. They may have run out of carriages to add. You have lots of track, so why don't you see what it can do ?

  • @SamsTrains

    @SamsTrains

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks a lot for sharing Andrew - it's a pity they didn't get the full Hornby Railways treatment, but they're not half nice models! As you say, lots of plastic, but the weight is really good! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    Hi Sam, nice review. I agree the quality does not match the price, it is slightly better than the railroad version. The only main issue with it is the motor, it is only a 3 pole motor. Not too sure how limiting that will be, not able to test mine on a layout yet. It can be changed to a 5 pole motor, but you lose the flywheel…Simon

    I can't help but wonder if issues on curves will arise with x-8-x and x-10-x locos. A 4-6-2 or 4-64 is going to able to take tight radius curves much better, surely? Plus, points and crossovers will be an issue unless tender pickups are present (and ideally on all axles). Meanwhile, a question. I know you've been vocally unhappy with 3 pole motors, and much prefer 5 pole motors with decent flywheels. But has any manufacturer experimented with, say, a 7 pole motor or upwards? Only I suspect that might prove to be a performance revelation if it can be miniaturised for model locos.

    Hi Sam, I’m a 13 year old from the United States, but I am very interested in the British steam locomotives, and I think that Hornby is a good start point for me, is it possible to have a OO gauge train on a HO train track?

    Being non DCC, could i run this on my layout? I know practically nothing about DCC, but am dimly aware of there being potential problems with running the one kind on the other type of system. I'm planning a small garden layout for express trains, and would love to see this loco whizzing along with a rake of LNER coaches. Beautiful...

    Hi Adrian, I've found that this one doesn't run on DC very well - it does with some controllers, but only back-wards on mine! Your options are to buy the Railroad version - which is just DCC ready, or buy this one, and remove the decoder! All the best, Sam :)

    Just had a look at one on Hatton's. It's firmly on the list. Seems to be (another Railroad) good model for the money! Also found something called the P2 project, a rebuild. If i lived in England, i would join right in with that. Volunteer or something. What a splendid locomotive.. www.p2steam.com/

    Hi Adrian, Anything with a sound chip fitted requires DCC. Anything with a none sound DCC chip fitted can run on a standard DC system. So, the answer to your question is no, the P2 with a sound chip fitted will not run on a standards DC system.

    There are actually TWO new P2 locomotives currently under construction. One in original condition (as modelled in this video) is being built by the P2 Steam Locomotive Company in Darlington and, like Tornado, will have a unique identity as the next member of the class, No. 2007 'Prince of Wales'. The second is being built by the Doncaster P2 Locomotive Trust with A4 streamlining and will carry the identity of the first member of the class No. 2001 'Cock O' The North'. To think, in the not too distant future, we will have TWO P2's on the rails. As you say, this truly is the future of steam in Britain. There are so many extinct locomotives that need to be seen again (Gresley's W1 'Hush Hush' Class, Bulleid's Leader Class, to name but a few...) Exciting times ahead, me thinks!

    I do love this loco, but had no end of problems with mine derailing on Peco crossovers and points. I think the front bogies are just too light and they jump. I am going to put some weights into my bogie. It is a strange design, not a patch on the Bachmann bogies on my Tornado A1. Mine also runs the same at slow speed. Support the Prince of Wales build of this P2, they always need help.

  • @SamsTrains

    @SamsTrains

    6 жыл бұрын

    It's a bit more difficult than that unfortunately - the DCC socket is inside the loco, not the tender on the Railroad version. This means there's no space for a speaker - you'd have to do a lot of work to get the decoder wired into the tender, and even then, you still wouldn't have the benefit of the pick-ups! If only it was easier - then it would be an awesome idea! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    The sad thing is with tts sound locos Hornby are using railroad locomotive bodies, some of which are repainted like the class 47 and 37, the only thing that is making the price tag as big as the LNER is the sound chip chassis. sad really if Hornby go through all this and don't put improved detailing on the loco just to save a few quid
