Interesting about Bachmann's Rebecca, that is an original west country loco. Does that mean that eventually Bachmann may start using the same tooling to cash in on Hornby's cash cow. Hopefully they will, it is about time.

Sam please follow the S1 project. I know you may never get to review it but it is such an important loco in history and I want to see justice done to it. Thanks for everything!

Hi. I think that Hornby bit off more than they could chew. I like Simon Kohler and I like his enthusiasm for the hobby. But why would you launch a completey new range seperate from the range that you already have a huge chunk of ? The cost burden alone would be enough to put off most businesses in the first place. Also having the other brands that Hornby own operating at their own losses seems to me to be to much for one company to shoulder. Maybe they should have thought of reducing their range a bit and reducing their prices to encourage people to come back to the hobby. Most if not all of the current range is out of most peoples budget. I,m no business man but I would slash my prices and stop developing new models of the ones that are already in the range. You have to entice the people back into the hobby. Even their railroad range is now becoming out of the reach of most people , and with the amount of good quality second hand products on the market and there availability why would anyone buy new ?

I thought the proper name for it is the Dukedog class, as the prototype was built using the frames of a 'Bulldog' and the boiler of a 'Duke' class.

Hey Sam thanks for the heads up on what's going on! Just thought I'd let you know Sonic Models are releasing a Large Prairie loco in N gauge very soon. I've pre ordered mine from Rails of Sheffield. Love to see a review of that loco! Regards Terry.

If you think the Hornby coaches are good, check out LS Models coaches. They are far superior than Hornby for detail.

It's worth noting that the controller is AC and the supplied power supply is also AC (obviously!). I have a few of these and I really like the way they work particularly on my N gauge layout.

I can relate to everything said here but I've had 17 years of dealing with non original creators stealing my content. What I have learned over many copyright disputes is to NOT warn or negotiate with these styles of people because they just want to argue it's always fair use. There are so many who take fair use / fair dealing to the extremes. Every time they give no credit, remove watermarks or attempt to alter video to fool the content ID system. Your semi lucky that in this case they left the watermark in. When BIG toy companies like LEGO hit me with multiple copyright strikes I was given no warning, all I got was emails in bold & red typeface explaining how I overstepped the line. even though I used none of LEGO's original content. Maybe what I struggle with here is by making this well executed video you have given this rogue channel who used your content a free ad and your audience will naturally seek him out. I always work silently and go through the copyright strike and counter claims that always happen. It's incredible how the people who steal others content start playing the victim and will make out your the aggressive party. Now what annoys me is I see KZread likes to prop up so many 'non original' creators yet they have said earlier in 2024 they were going to focus on 'original' creators. Channels like yours where you make everything from scratch. I gotta laugh because these days I do not trust KZread / Google in any way. One huge problem I see is simple. Sam you have all your eggs in one basket here on KZread. That's really dangerous to do.

Kato equals quality, lots of lessons in the build in what should be in so many other model train manufacturers. Their track system is also very interesting to tinker with. The old argument related to made in China Vs Japan is simple. Yes sure sometimes something made in China is ok, but sadly so many times it's substandard for the priced. Wow why am I thinking of Hornby right now. Japan has a lot of pride in their design and manufacturing, it can be seen in so many of their made in Japan products.

Great video like usual Sam! Despite its flaws I do really like this loco, and I'm looking into getting a DCC fitted one from Clark Railworks! Also, I believe I saw what looked like smoke around the top of the tender when you were testing the crawl of the loco after it was run in. It was probably nothing but you can never be too careful with these models. Keep up the great work! You're a real inspiration to many!

I can't help but wonder if issues on curves will arise with x-8-x and x-10-x locos. A 4-6-2 or 4-64 is going to able to take tight radius curves much better, surely? Plus, points and crossovers will be an issue unless tender pickups are present (and ideally on all axles). Meanwhile, a question. I know you've been vocally unhappy with 3 pole motors, and much prefer 5 pole motors with decent flywheels. But has any manufacturer experimented with, say, a 7 pole motor or upwards? Only I suspect that might prove to be a performance revelation if it can be miniaturised for model locos.

My opinion is that railway modellers are geographically separate so if you mix in American (and continental European) trains - you risk losing audience. Maybe separate channels?

Photos of both the West Country and the Royal Scot appear as locos "Coming Soon" in the 1976 Wrenn catalogue. The tender and motor are the same as supplied with the Hornby-Dublo rebuilt West Country which dates back to the 1950s.

One of my favourite BR locos. Your review was spot on and totally fair. One observation, seeing the 50 sitting on the track, it looks to me that the rails of the TT track look out of scale to the loco and its wheels. A bit like EM and OO I suppose. I don't have a model railway, not since the late 70s anyway, and this is the first time I've seen TT track close up. Does quality / accuracy vary between Hornby and Peco ? I know this is a bit off at a tangent but the immaculate class 50 made it look quite obvious.

Hornby already make an extremely good class 60. It’s actually one of Hornby’s best models. I’m glad a new one is being done. But I wish they had done a model we don’t already have a in Ready to Run. Also class 60s. I run a little shop. They don’t sell well!

Wow, the S1 Duplex is spectacular Sam. Please DO follow that one. We are very temped and will have to check any prospect of converting to 3-rail Märklin. We do have a section which can be flipped to 2 and 3 rail as well. In any case, we will be needing any chance of changing out the DCC decoder to the ESU Lockpilot 5 which can process DCC, mfx+, analogue DC and AC, and 2-rail and 3-rail on the fly. We'll have to investigate. Cheerio 💓

The old Crosti 9F model had a ridiculously light plastic tender and no tender pickups. Seeing it stall on the S bend was anticipated. :) The newer 9F took the S bend with much more aplomb. Does the new tender have pickups to improve matters? Though I suspect ANY loco with 10 driving wheels is going to have curve restrictions.

Hi Sam, we're being spoilt for choice! Some great models on the way and I'm glad I don't want any of the American outine models given their price. I can't afford a rake of the Dapol toplights but I've preordered a 57xx & 14xx and looking forward to my 44xx from Accurascale, Dapol & Rapido. Is it me or are Dapol lifting their prices? Cheers Sam.

great update Sam -but with regards to the Accurascale class 60 ,we really do have to question as to weather the hobby/market really does need yet ANOTHER class 60??? its really beyond me as just WHY these manufactures are falling over themselfs to duplicate stuff ,YET its now 2024 and we are STILL unable to get a good ,modern tooled class 81/82/83 and class 84 25 KV A.C. electric loco -something that modern-image modellers are just crying out for !! and if Accurascale,s class 50,s and second-run Deltics release dates are anything to go by ,then the Accurascles class 60 release date is very, very optimistic and totally unrealistic !

I was so disappointed with BLI's announcement. I'm not really a big fan of duplexes and articulated locos (you can thank the obnoxious Big Boy fans for that) and was hoping for something from the south that could convince me to drop my preorder of ScaleTrains N&W J class. Ah well, it's a unique engine but it's just not for me.

Some of us Sam do not have an extra room or floor to set up a train set layout. Or for that matter choose to buy a hundred toy locomotives for their collection. Most of us can barely provide enough space for a 4'x 6' table layout and choose to buy less than six toy locomotives. Frankly I am surprised Hornby has never adopted N scale toy trains before, and wonder why it took so long to produce TT-120 scale trains. And no we didn't expect a smaller train model to cost less, usually smaller scales costs MORE...

For me, it's a mismatch between the 2005 model and the 2023/2024 model, which is why I prefer the 2005 because it is cheaper and 8-Pin, so easier DCC.

A great summary of the railway news recently. I'm surprised you didn't mention Cavalex, as their 60s are also expected in early 2025 (one year on from their 56s). I'm not a fan of american stuff (as in, I'm generally only interested in British train stuff, not that I dislike foreign stuff), but the Broadway S1 looks fantastic, and I'd love to see a review of it when it comes out. Just had emails from Accurascale this morning to say the Andrew Barclays and the P class' have entered production, with a revised estimated shipping of Q3 2024. Meaning for once, the due date is earlier than previously expected, as when they took on the project, their due date moved from April/May 2024 to Q4 2024. I received my TT:120 class 50 from Rails on the day you dropped your review, and it looks fantastic, sounds great, but I haven't tested it running yet. I had to order the blue and grey mk2Fs separately, from Gaugemaster, as Rails had none in stock; they look fantastic, pretty similar to the mk3s in terms of specs, and they do have moulded interiors with correct seating (2+2 for standard, 2+1 for first class) despite having tinted windows. Interestingly, they also came with magnetic buckeye couplings as an alternative, which would've been great to go with the mk3s, but unlike the 00 ones and the Hunt Elites, they're directional (like Brio), so you have to get them the right way round when coupling them. So they're fine for fixed rakes, but not necessarily for rakes that get mixed around, or even coupling locos to the stock.

Not convinced that the Bachmann Rebecca will be worth the price given the prices of the existing Thomas range, but they could prove me wrong! As far as Rapido go with the tender connection, the solution on the Stirling Single was a multi-pin plug and socket with clips either side. Actually very easy to do and super reliable, so perhaps they have refined that a bit.
