Unboxing & Review of a 9-Bay NAS Motherboard from AliExpress!

Ғылым және технология

KZread Video Description:
Today, I'm unboxing and reviewing a unique find from AliExpress - a nameless, brand-less 9-Bay NAS motherboard that caught my eye. With a powerhouse setup featuring an AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS CPU, 32GB DDR5 RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD, this motherboard promises to offer an exciting alternative to pre-built NAS systems from big names like Synology or QNAP.
What's in the box? How does this motherboard stack up in terms of specs, including its Mini-ITX form factor, impressive I/O options, and expandability with up to 64GB RAM and multiple NVMe SSD slots? Is it worth the $760 investment, including shipping and taxes? And most importantly, can it outperform commercial 9-bay NAS solutions when we set it up with TrueNAS Core?
I'll walk you through the specs, share my installation process (complete with speed-ups and engaging visuals), and give you my honest thoughts on whether this motherboard is a viable heart for a custom NAS project. Whether you're a seasoned tech enthusiast or new to the NAS scene, this video is packed with insights, tips, and a little bit of my trademark 'Technically Unsure' charm.

Just to throw it in there Topton isn't really a no name brand, maybe not well known to the average eastern consumer but they've been around for a while (along with cwwk). Compared to some of the stuff you can find on ebay and aliexpress while I wouldn't exactly recommend them to someone who wasn't DIY oriented I've had pretty good luck with the hardware I've gotten from them.

Most of these boards come with Intel i225v or i226v NIC, so a dab at the Intel Update Assistant while being in Windows wohld possibly have helped. And if everything else goes wrong, you could possibly find drivers with the hardware ID from the device manager and Google...

You can use ECC anyways, as the memory controller has been part of the CPU since 2008. All Ryzen SKUs support ECC RAM, but it has to be unbuffered. Only EPYC SKUs support Buffered ECC. You could address 128 GB, but 48GB is the highest capacity you're gonna find for a single ddr5 sodimm.

@@BrunodeSouzaLino You can use ECC Unbuffered memory BUT ... the ECC functionality is NOT active. Very important detail! Aka, its runs like normal DDR5 memory, but you do not get the system wide ECC support, that you expect. This is a issue with all those non "pro" laptop / mini-pc / 8700G / .. where ever else they shove that in monolite in. It needs a PRO CPU. The Desktop CPUs (minus the none "PRO" G) all support ECC.

With your Windows install, the missing drivers are likely from Intel (the NIC's) and AMD (the cpu/chipset). The easiest path to getting the missing drivers is with a free utility called Snappy Driver Origin. Then again, this mobo is aimed at a Linux (or freebsd) based NAS or firewall, so who cares about Windows.
