    Both CPU's have a Tjunction max of 105 degrees Celsius. They will not start throttling until 80+ degrees Celsius. That said, I agree it is warm at 60+ degrees and would prefer to use a fan. Several PCB cases are available with mounting holes for a 15mm slim or 25mm regular thickness fan depending on which case size is selected. For the performance discrepancy, my only theory is that while the N305 has a higher single core turbo frequency of 3.8Ghz (versus N97 3.6Ghz), the N97 has a higher ALL core turbo of 3.4Ghz (versus N305 3.2Ghz).

    18:20 if you designed a custom case for it, you'd including mounting points for a big fan directly above it.

    can't help but think this has gotta be some kind of driver related issue. were you able to try these multimedia and gaming tests from inside Linux?

    I imagine it's doing a bunch of windows update in the background so the heatsink should be very warm and power usage would be far from idle numbers, it means it's working correctly. If doing anything which requires the CPU to spin up the cores and actually tax them you will need active cooling, this could be made more clear on their site.

    To check the model of the ethernet adapter you could just boot Linux off the USB and do lspci

    I think for that budget, ur better off getting an AMD/APU or even an ARM based board depending on the application.

    I think you don't see a difference because you did not enable unlimited performance on both boards. That unlocks the total wattage and requires the use of a fan and is safe and tested. Unlimited performance they say has no effect on power consumption while idle. The 8 core version practically demands the use of unlimited performance. I wonder what the performance comparison is with UP disabled for both boards while transcoding videos. You might also try some utility programs that disable cores. I want to know how to enable and disable the UP mode dynamically while windows or Linux was running. I would love to see this company come out with a couple mini-itx and micro-itx, power efficient while idle, motherboards. One X16 slot would be nice. Also at least 2 nvme. But don't bother with extra power connectors. x16 is useful for a mid range graphics card. Yes people will try to pointlessly play games on it. The x16 and graphics card is useful for transcoding on the card. It's a solid strategy to use little power most of the time and then ramp it up to convert a file in 2-5 minutes. Then turn the graphics card back off.

    I bought the ultra with a case, fan, ram and sata cables. Still excellent value. I connected 4 sata drives and put a different version of linux on each drive so I can switch between them on real hardware.

    Which one? Did you buy this? www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-h4-case-type-3/ As for fan, did you buy official fan from ODroid or something generic?

    Did they figure out a way around that seemingly hard coded from Intel bug with more than 16GB of RAM on these atom-class processors become unstable? EDIT: i have an N200 and it becomes unstable above 16GB but because i use it as my firewall/router i only need 8GB. I had wrote this chip off for anything other than a single purpose device like an entry level HTPC when i found out that it wasnt just an issue with my unit but seemingly every brand that uses AlderlakeN Atom-class processors, like the i3-N305 which i had been hoping to turn into a server+docker, to replacing my sister's file server which is i7-7700T I know its still not officially supported by Intel but i'd like to throw 64GB in one of these things(or 128GB with 2 dimms on the single channel), and find a board with four NVMe slots at 2x, or heck even 8 of them at 1x, and use that 9th lane for somewhat high speed networking for an ultra compact, ultra low powered, even portable file server, of couse both of these designs would be much larger than this package, but i think this would have worked great as an HDD file server if it had another M.2 slot on the back, and had 2x microSD slots that were bootable, with the M.2 drives for caching.

    1:29 Both captions say "Odroid H4 Ultra." Also, did you check your H4 Ultra version is configured to use 15W of TDP instead of 9W? Because it should be faster. The clock speed on the iGPU is slightly higher and it has 8 more execution units than the H4+.

    Also, the TDP that Intel quotes means absolutely nothing in real terms. It refers to the "base frequency" which all CPUs happily ignore anyway in order to turbo (and in consequence, need more power) or clock down and save power. What is more, OP probably wanted to refer to power limits (PL1 or PL2), not the TDP. But somehow I doubt the power limits on any of these were 9 watts.

  • @BrunodeSouzaLino

    @BrunodeSouzaLino

    @@r0galik The N305 default TDP is 16W, but it can be configured down to 9W. That will limit how much the chip can turbo. This is more of a server CPU feature.

    He would not need a stronger power supply unless he hooks up 3.5 inch HDDs. I don't doubt his performance results because other people seem to be seeing a similar trend.
