Hey brother,just a thought but have you considered using MCT or Caustic soda and vinegar to remove the surface rust? Would certainly cut back on the sanding and still be in line with your hands only approach...😊

the fact that you do everything by hand makes me want to try doing it, on account of most other channels using sand blasters and laser engravings your videos seem like something I could do with some effort and know-how...not to undersell you, it is just that your work is what most of us would be able to do without breaking the bank

Hello dear friend. I am from Greece 75 years . Sorry for my english. I am not at all expert but I realy enjoy watching your videos. For this one I wonder if it could be better to fill the handle's gap with wood chips instead of apoxy. By the way, I prefered the "Old School" surroundings better than the new modernized.

So nice to here positive words about ducks and location. It is near by where I live, walking distance. Hello Сидячий 👋😀 That is great to hear. Thank you! I don't know your reach and options, but I would recommend finding hand drill made in England or USA. They are usually good quality and very durable. I have a few from both countries and very pleased with them. Also if you have possibilities to check them in person, please do that. If works everything smooth and nicely you should buy it... also note that isn't so easy to drill with them, needs strong hands and patience 😆👍 Cheers and good luck!

Back in the day,everybody's fishing bag had a knife like this. The idea was,you could use the metal knob to kill the fish instead of carrying a priest to do it. (Priest is the name given to the small club used to finish the fish ) Nice job...well done.

i have an old rusty knife to restore. What is the FFD rust remover made of? Or do you sell it? It has a bone handle so that part makes me nervous. any tips?

Use any type of vinegar as a rust remover. Just be patient while dismantling. Good luck!

Great job the only thing I wish to see you could have use the original pommel but other than that you did a great job I love that you did the restoration by hand using old school tools that's what I loved about it and I've never seen anybody get rid of the rust off a blade with just a file and sandpaper so you did a good job with that cuz I had never seen that before good job overall

Hey Tristan 👋😃 Welcome to my channel and thank you so much for watching 🙏😊 You wrote so many good things and I am thrilled to have such a great feedback 😆👍. There where to things why I decided to remove the original pommel: first was that I was uncertain about the knife's quality, especially when the knife was build with brass and aluminum parts, in my head that was not the best combination 😌 and second was about holding the knife. The handle itself was somehow uncomfortable to hold and use it briefly, it would be worse for a longer period for sure 😏. I enjoy doing things with old school tools and you will see many upcoming restoration videos as this one 😉 It would be great to hear from you about the music: was it ok? And what do you think about short breaks with ducks, stream and so on (B rolls)? Thank you again and Marry Christmas 🦌 Best regards from Norway

@@FFD_Restorations I have a western knife with aluminum on both sides of the handle and it's a solid knife , but next ask yourself how is this attached, to this piece of metal cause that was 200$ western knife 1940s 50s,

will do the job,thanks.

You should have kept the bone scales. The wood changes the character of the knife.

Me gusta su trabajo, sin embargo creo que como dueño de ese cuchillo le dejaría las empuñaduras originales de hueso o cuerno incrustadas en la madera. No se por que le quito esa originalidad al cuchillo.

Hey man just curious, is there any reason you dont vinegar soak and scrub to remove the rust? is that just a preference or are there benefits. curious because i'm looking to restore a knife in similar condition, thanks for any input :)

Hey Jarid! In some videos I do vinegar baths but some don't. I highly recommend using vinegar, it will help you to remove rust easier. Just keep in mind that you still need to do sanding and polishing afterwards to get a nice finish... Good luck!

Nice job man once again I love the fact you do it all by hand here's a little tip for you if you ever do a knife like that again why don't you try sticking a piece of wood in the handle that has a gap in it and then you can shape it like the way you want it it's just a little tip cuz I had to do the exact same thing and I love the fact that you exposed the logo on it after cleaning it I always love to see that

I am an old fan of your channel , i have seen what quality level you had reached 👌 , i wonder 🤔, if you would really restore that specifically knife nowadays what would you do with your tools ? Can you re-restore it again with another handle made of antler?

Yah it's a good knife but u broke the pommel off and it had a pin, I've seen that knife before I think it's a western knife

thats not restauration, that was recreation....the knife has bone handle....and melted stopper...you droped away that and changed the handle...

Aren't you supposed to dunk the blade in salt water hooked to electrodes to remove rust...like in most other restore videos? Also, why cut off the aluminiun rear part when it could have been punched out, the studs holding it? An egg beater drill????

No, I don't use any power for my projects like others. Because it doesn't have stud, end of the tang is hammered in aluminium and would break after punching it out. Of course, I use only hand and foot powered tools!

Ich sage einfach ich sah viel bessere Arbeit von Dir. Die Form und Machart des Griffs gefällt mir nicht und ist unhandlich denn die Ecken hinten schmerzen in der Hand würde man das Messer länger benutzen. Ich hätte das Messer nicht mehr restauriert denn die Klinge ist wegen der vielen schwarzen Flecken immer noch rostig denn das Schwarz ist nichts weiter wie polierter Rost. Das stellt sich die Frage wie tief das geht und ob das Messer noch sicher ist oder ob es brechen und einen verletzen kann. Ich hatte solche Rostlöcher einmal bei mir an einer Axt - habe sie so lange runter geschliffen bis ich merkte die Axt ist Schrott....

I'm not sure but I think the tittle is a little disingenuous and click baity. Did you do a nice job yes is it a complete Restoration? No a complete Restoration would be restoring everything as close to original as possible! This is basically a makeover not a Restoration. If you would have took more care with the handle and Tang and repaired them instead of replacing them then that would classify it as a complete Restoration! No I don't think it matters weather you used better material or not. Because only repairing the old is a Restoration adding new is not it's a make over of the original design. The original handle looked to be Plastic could have been bone but the wood looked nothing like the original.
