Restoring Old Blade and Making a Handle
Restoring an EXTREMELY old blade from Sweden and making a knife. This blade is produced around 1900th in a small place called Eskilstuna. Knives produced by Carl Walfrid Dahlgren are well known for quality and respected by collectors.
About the Old Blade
Owner of the knife factory was Carl Walfrid Dahlgren. The factory is located in Eskilstuna, Sweden. Knives were produced from 1870 to 1915 mostly for hunting. Final product from this factory is marketed as a luxury hunting knife. His knives were famous for high quality etched blades and leather sheaths. In the first period of production the blades were marked "CW Dahlgren Eskilstuna" and later "C.W.D.F.A.B. Eskilstuna" The factory grew well and in 1904 he had 166 employees.
The Restoration Process
I started by removing the old metal washer at the end of tang. On my big wet stone wheel I removed all the surface rust and worn look from the blade. Blade was looking very good after, so I continued with sanding. I used sandpaper from 120 to 1200 grit.
The blade is plain and I wanted to customize it a bit. Therefore, I made five circles different in size and five lines on the top of the blade to separate those circles.
The Knife Making
In this video I made a new wooden handle out of darker wood mahogany and lighter beech. I cut the pieces, glued them together and planed the sides. I started sanding with 180 and finished with 400 grit.
To give a character to this knife I carved Celtic motif and filled it with mixed mahogany dust and glue. Removed uneven surface with a rasp and sanded down. The handle is submerged in Teak oil and polished afterwards.

Knife Blade Came in a Mail
I received this knife blade from a guy who also restores old things. His channel is named Restored Channel and he is from Sweden. The blade was totally unexpected and I was pleasantly surprised. Thank you for the package Restored!

Wow, Love the handle, nice way of customizing it. I like what you did with the blade as well, some may want to keep it original bit you gave it some character. You really put a lot of work in this one with multiple angles and closeups. It makes the video pop👌 Thank you for the shoutout🙏 It really means a lot!

Tip...never sit your plane flat on the blade.Get into the habit of resting it on its side. This prevents accidental damage happening.

I restore knives and hatchets and I love what you do. The only thing I would have done differently is that I would have put a more accurate tip on the knife. I am half Norwegian and have several Scandinavian knives. They all have very accurate tips. After all they are designed for hunting and piercings hides. Love the non power tools. Keep it up!

Very NICE work and a unique carving job on that handle! Next project - soon - needs to be a proper leather sheath, then a hike in the woods and a little bushcrafting or other use of this or one of your other knives. Time to expand the old skill set, and find a reason to take these tools afield to see how your work holds up, eh...? 😁👍❗️

Fine...Fine...Fine...Nice...Nice...Nice... Happy happy joy joy... THIS is tha sort of job I wanted to see in your channel : Instaling a new wood handle to an old blade. Very dared to first shapeing tha piece and THEN drilling tha hole... see you handle very well the 90° angle drilling hole technique. Now... Did you thought using recycled wood like an skateboard deck, just to vary, and showing us how you deal working with a 2 piece along wood knife greep..?
