Ultimate RC jets: RARE Gloster Javelin RC Turbine SCALE JET

RARE Gloster Javelin RC Turbine SCALE JET
'Essential RC' has not seen an RC Gloster Javelin flying before so it was fantastic to see Joe's new turbine powered version of this jet at the North London Model Flying Club Scale Day event. You can see the effects of the wind turbulence on this jet through its low fast passes and on final approach. Joe is an experienced pilot so gave us an excellent demo despite the conditions. Almost a perfect flight until he touched down and lost one main wheel...but no harm done.
Filmed by Dom Mitchell for the 'Essential RC' KZread channel at the NLMFC Scale Day with the Panasonic AG-UX180 4K pro camcorder.

DETAILS FROM WIKIPEDIA FOR THE GLOSTER JAVELIN:
The Gloster Javelin is a twin-engined T-tailed delta-wing subsonic night and all-weather interceptor aircraft that served with Britain's Royal Air Force from the mid-1950s until the late 1960s. The last aircraft design to bear the Gloster name, it was introduced in 1956 after a lengthy development period and received several upgrades during its lifetime to its engines, radar and weapons, which included the De Havilland Firestreak air-to-air missile.
The Javelin was succeeded in the interceptor role by the English Electric Lightning, a supersonic aircraft capable of flying at more than double the Javelin's top speed, which was introduced into the RAF only a few years later. The Javelin served for much of its life alongside the Lightning; the last Javelins were withdrawn from operational service in 1968 following the introduction of successively more capable versions of the Lightning.

Woooa such a Dutch Roll there! 03:19 I wonder if all the delta-with-tail planes have that behavior... I experienced the same with my little EDF A-4 Skyhawk.

I've never seen a Gloster Javelin in the RC form. Lovely airframe and super flying by Joe in those winds. Really showed during the landing; he did a great job setting her down. Quick fix on the wheel! Hope to see her again one day! Dom was right on point with the camera as well! Cheers! ✈

Beautifully filmed and flown as ever. Thanks. The Dutch roll of the prototype is there on the model. You can see the nose yawing off to both sides in an oscillation which then causes a lateral rolling moment. It seems to be more pronounced with flap. The Dutch roll caused the wheel to come off as the yaw came on just as she touched down , with undercarriages understandably protesting at going sideways. Fascinating translation of real performance into the model. Thanks. Congtrats to the builder/ flyer.

Too much side load on the landing gear on landing probably caused by the instability of the model. Delta wings have a tendency to dutch roll as you see it wants to do that on this flight maybe a little more forward CG will help. Also less control throws might help. Beautiful plane.

Question, is the vertical stabilizer a little on the large ,heavy side? It seemed as though the craft was fighting to fly level, or was it windy that day?

Sadly not this year buddy. I had to make a decision between my regular attendance of W&W or an invite to a RC jet event near Stuttgart the same weekend. Took the latter just for a change. Next year I'll be back at W&W though. Have a good time though.
