Mission 66 - Gloster Javelin mission 1966
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In 1966 my father ( Flt lt. WDS Waddington) was based in RAAF Butterworth ( Malaysia ). This film was made for a local competition, which they won, much to the frustration of the other entrants who complained about the unfair advantage they had. Not everyone has access to a Jet Fighter..
My Father is the pilot shown at the beginning & end of the film ( reading "the" magazine ). He flew the plane you are watching in the film. The Navigator is Paul Woodward. Filming was done by Bert Foley - Navigator in the 2nd Javelin, which was flown by Gerry Clarke. I'm afraid I have no idea who the ground crew are.
The unidentified plane they are sent to identify is an Avro Vulcan.
According to dads log book, the film shots were taken on 2nd 3rd & 7th Feb 1966. The Vulcan shots done on 7th Feb.
I appologize for the sound quality. I'll see if I can improve it.
Anyway enjoy the film & the amazing Javelin Roll at the end.

In reply to sqdm1,I wonder on what he bases the opinion that the Javelin was a "Terrible" aircraft.! wonder if he flew it?I did over a period of nine years, and found it to be a delight to fly, with precice controls, and handling.I was chosen to carry out several aerobatic displays at various venues,it was a fighter and handled like one.In all,I flew 26 types of aircraft, and though the Hunter was top of my list, the Javelin was not far behind.Read,"Javelin From The Cockpit" by Peter Caygill.

Olivia. That's fantastic! Bet you're very proud of him. 🇬🇧
i was at Butterworth from 1965 to 1966 on 60sqdn as a airframe mech and i remember flying in the back seat of a javelin with Dave Waddington as the pilot it was the best flight of my life Miss those days
I absolutely adore this aircraft. Such an beautiful piece of engineering
When I was in Borneo, we had Javelins operating out of Kuching Airport in 1965! It was good as FGA 👍💥
I was at RaaF Butterworth on 60 Sqdn with their Mk 9 Jav's in 1966 J/T Eng Fitter then posted down to Tengah when the 'confrontation' with Indonesia finished. HAPPY Days.
Great to see thank you - my late father was flying with 60 squadron from Tengah at this time
People disrespect the Javelin. But in reality, it flew faster, further, higher, carried more punch, was more advanced and was technically superior to any aircraft ever built at that time since 1916. It was made of metal. It had jet engines. Missiles that could reach out to six miles away and still miss almost every time. A beautiful plane...which saved the empire.
Lovely - the only time I ever saw one of these fly was at school at Worksop, Notts. One of the lads who had left school and joined the RAF must have finished his training and brought his Javelin to show us. He flew it past the windows not more than 20 feet off the deck and at a helluva speed! The noise was something else. I never heard if he got in trouble for this, probably not. Today the namby-pambys would likely want to throw him in jail!
From 2:30 onwards, I really love that view of Penang Island and Georgetown city as the Javelin lifts off from Butterworth and then climbs to altitude over the island.
What a gem. Thank you for posting.
Wonderful footage of the beautiful Javelin, thank you 62STEVEW for letting us see your film. Brilliant!
Fantastic video! Gives us a glimpse into a the types of missions that javelins did. Love the sound of the cart + AVPIN start. Hearing ATC is really cool.
thanks Steve lol i was only a baby @ the time when iwas 19 i flew a few aircraft after vigorous training!!! ok vampire winjeel macchi 326 then got my wings on the mirage 3 as a flight lieutenant !! 76 blackpanther squadron raaf under big jim flemming!! great times & memories
I have just experianced a time slip.....I was at RAAF Butterworth . during that period with 52Sdn and SASS. Many ,many thanks for the memories
Supreb. Many thanks for publishing it. I always felt that the Javelin was a much under rated aircraft that did a proficient job in a quiet understated way..
I think it was in 1968 during a school trip to Stansted airport, I saw a Javelin that had belly landed (wheels up). All the lower skin had been ripped away and I was able to walk underneath the aircraft (wheels then down) and look up into the insides. Pretty impressive to a 12yr old.
Thanks for sharing, a great nostalgic piece :)
very nice video! Can see the Javelin fly past Penang harbour at the background. Well..I love British jets but unfortunate that I born in 1964 and off course I won't be able to have a glimpse on this jet passing by from Tengah to Butterworth vic-versa at all. I'm sure those day have a lots of activity in the sky in Malaysia. But I did saw a coupe of Mirage IIIO of the RAAF passing by Kuala Lumpur in 70s, by the way I'm a Malaysia!.
Totally brilliant! Thank you.
excellent mate, love the roll!cheers for sharing that :)
Great video, many thanks...!
great vid, thanks for sharing - pete,
Bloody good movie, especially as it was probably shot on a handheld 8mm camera!
Great piece of history.
To Copewood1939. 64 Squadron was based at Waterbeach 1960 then moved to Binbrook 1962 or 1963. Took part in excercise Shiksha in 1964, ended up in Tengah 1965 then disbanded.

64 squadron were at Duxford until the end of June 1961, then to Binbrook in August 1962. Exercise Shiksha, India was October - November 1963., disbanded June 1967.
Brilliant!!!
Absolutely fascinating and evocative - even if it was made months before I was born! An important movie record of the Javelin, probably rare in itself.
@62STEVEW G'day there, "Son Of Biggles", in this delightful portrayal of "Delta Jets, They Boggles the Mind...!". Ah, '66, that was such a Vintage Year. My own Air Farce was using Avon Sabres & Mirages, with Canberras as backup, back then ; with Phantoms about to Lend Lease the disapparated Ardvarks. I avoided Kerosene-Burners, m'self. Search "Red Baron Skycraft Scout", to see the Museum-Piece which taught me to levitate... It had a low Carbon-Footprint, by comparison. Ciao !
Pukka film, thanks for uploading!
Mission 66? Wipe out the Jedi Order, what? Jolly Good!
Cheers Bro, See he had our hair style all those years ago. Simon
Great bit of nostalgia.
GREAT video.. :>)

You're kidding? Lmfao the flat iron.
Great film.
J'aime le Gloster Javelin
Cool looking aircraft! One thing about that Javelin is it looks to me like it was almost a pure delta fighter like the French Mirage or the American F-106. Not sure why they made it with that horizontal stabilizer where it was but I can’t help but wonder if it were a pure delta could have been even better than what it was?

lol..whenever I saw RAAF or RAF aircrew serving in a tropical weather, mainly in Malaysia in those golden day they always wear short only. Nowadays, I'll think the RMAF aircrew are not allowed to wear like that, they must wear a uniform or overall or some what....hmm
The once Far flung Empire ! Now look at us - it's a Bloody shame !!!
Aircraft 'faults' often grow in the telling - usually by people who read books as opposed to having a practical association with type. The only thing I ever had against it was that 64 Squadron kept us awake on those bloody night-flying standbys at Duxford in the late fifties.;-)
This is probably Butterworth Air Base as the beach could be seen on the left side of the runway as soon as the AC tookj off
This aircraft had a lot problems
In addition to my yesterday's comment,it had awesome firepower,4 30mm cannons, and 4 Firestreak missiles. Also, could reach 400 kts.on one engine.Because of the high tail,a normal stall recovery was not possible.so you had to go into a spin which took about 15000 ft to recover. However, any decent pilot would not get into a stall situation. Most accidents were caused by the unrelability of the Sapphire engines,Centreline Closure ,often proved catastrophic..Pilot error also a factor in many accidents.

Fred, I am planning on making an independent film on a "what if" cold war Javelin mission. Would it be possible to ask you some questions about the plane? Thanks!
British military jets of this era, up to the 1970s: winged turds with jet engines
Finally proof that Holly on Red Dwarf was right all along ........... There really *is* a *purple* alert. (Nice bit of ferreting to dig this out BTW - Much obliged)
They were from RAF Tengah the teeth of the far east air force FEAF .I know.
Commander Gloster, the time has come. Execute Mission 66.
The mini me vulcan, Who says wide wing delta is slow and dos'nt work, you could rip them off, tape them to the fusilage of a eurofighter and it wouldnt know the difference....
“Execute order 66”
Awesome aircraft in it's day ,rummer has it the jav could find a penny in the fog ,Just how much of that is truth i don't know And was supposedly under powered .
Further to my previous comment....On a lighter note, Is it me or does the lady on the front of the magazine look like Kate Middleton/Wales????
are you sure is 1966? The Playboy is from April 65'... just saying...
Singapore?
It took two minutes to launch 4 Vulcans, quicker than a single Javelin.

Were the Javelins on QRA too?🙄
Taxi fully armed with missiles, take off with empty pylons... oops.
"?"
"We've identified the bomber as one of ours"?? Pathetic. Like there were unknown Vulcans all over the place.
