The planet arrakis also known as Dune, Is the only place in the known universe where the spice melange is found. The spice is a drug that is used throughout the Imperium for various purposes mainly it's geriatric properties, the spice is life and can more than double the human life span. In some special people such as the highly trained Bene Gesserit Reverend mothers, The spice melange can awaken prescient Vision, sight of the future. The spice also heightens awareness and is used by The Guild as a means for space travel. Spice melange is the gasoline of the universe, without it all Commerce throughout the inhabited galaxies would cease.

Having been introduced to this universe very, very recently through the recent Dune movie, I feel somewhat overwhelmed with the sheer scope and complexity of this story. I'm really grateful for your content for clarifying a lot of questions I've had since my first watch. I really, really want to get stuck into this saga. I haven't felt this engaged by a fictional world in ages I just want to know more.

As a child in the 80s, I wanted to watch the movie, my parents said they didn't understand it and didn't like it. I was strangely compelled to watch it, almost as if pushed to. It came on HBO one morning and I watched it instead of Saturday Cartoons and understood more than my parents did who tried to explain what they had seen for themselves. They were completely LOST and didn't understand anything. I, now know, that I understood the story quite well at age 9. I'm still strangely pulled to this universe. I noticed the Warhammer 40k stuff that was inspired from Dune when I got into that game system. Weird to hear this story now explained and seeing some inspirations Frank must have had from the Bible. Always leaves me with a strange but familiar feeling when seeing anything associated with Dune. Like....prophetic feeling.... I dont know how to explain it. A.I. thought explored in the 60s when most of the world was concerned with Vietnam and conflict. But Frank was over here warning us about the far future of computers taking over humans. Crazy.

After being hooked in by the movie, I started reading Dune in January of last year. Upon finishing the first book I stumbled upon this video, but as soon as I saw that it had future spoilers, I stopped watching Today, 1 year later, I just finished Chapterhouse. And I can confidently say that this series changed my life in this past 12 months, and changed my perspective on many things. Frank Herbert is a genius and I'm thankful to be able to glimpse at his thoughts so many years after his passing I can also now watch this video entirely and say: thank you, Quinn, for sharing your passion with us. No one in my close proximity actually read these books, and watching your videos sometimes feel like discussing theories about Dune with a friend. Thanks!

Obviously not the same as the book but it’s still VERY nuanced in all fronts of its filmmaking and portrayal of its story! I agree, and when I read the books 25 years ago, I noticed the sudden shift. As books 1-3 happen in a reasonable laps of time, Paul's late teenage years and adulthood, God emperor suddenly shifts centuries forward, and I remember that jump confusing me.

It did not confuse me so much, since Children of Dune ended up with Leto II as the emperor and becoming a great sandworm too, so despite shifting centuries, GEOD was logically related to that ending. The jump in Heretics confused me at first, however now I bless that feeling. By the way I love your username.

@Judge Dredd But without the Emperor's attack on House Atreides, he would never have mingled with the Fremen, unless, thanks to the "prophecy", they found a way to drag him into the mess. Duncan would not have been killed, nor would there have been any suspicions thrown on Jessica, so Thufir would never suspect her as out-rightly as he did in the novel. In fact, it's more likely they all would be united in advising Leto, and thus the Harkonen would not be able to defeat the Atreides. Eventually, the Atreides might even be able to overthrow House Corrino, though I don't think that was in any part of way Leto's plans. For me the Shadam IV was just paranoid, as any good Emperor should be.

  • @NothingYouHaventReadBefore

Probably would've gone off to inherit Caladan and continue training his own army - who were getting at the level of Shaddam's Sardaukar (which is why the whole mess happened in the first place). There are many, many different things that could've happened at this point, we know already that Paul had (latent) psychic talents. He would've still been in a feud with the Bene Gesserit if he refused to give up his genes, or at least allow himself to be bred. The problem is though, that the BG wanted him bred with the Harkonnen. I think this: Paul had no way to escape his fate, regardless of whether the Emperor had plotted against him. Whether it'd be for his genes, or his army, or simply because of the feud with the Harkonnens, he would've ended up in a ditch somewhere. Arrakis just happened to be a good ditch, so to speak.

Related to that there was something Paul said that stuck with me, back when he first experienced prescience. I see two paths before me. One leads to that galaxy encompassing jihad. The other, I go the Baron and greet him with open arms and say "grandfather". Where that other path leads is too horrible to even imagine. If Paul and everyone prescient is simply picking the best of many bad futures, what horrors could the worst of the worst contain?

First of all I would like to thank everyone that has enjoyed, liked, and commented on my video. I have taken into consideration some of your comments regarding my pronunciation. Some of them agree with such as Kwisatz Haderach and Tleilaxu. Names like Alia, and Leto could have different pronunciations depending on the accent. I also might agree that the word Missionaria Protectiva should be pronounced as "misheeonara" but I definitely disagree that matre should be pronounced "Ma-truh" or "Ma-ter" I will check with the audio books and improve the pronunciations that I think need to be improved.

@IdeasOfIceAndFire: First, thank you for making this video. I stumbled on it only recently and decided to post some comments and have been having a very enjoyable conversation with another fan. Regarding the pronunciation: I would ask that you pronounce "Alia" as the name is pronounced in the Lynch movie, with the emphasis on the first syllable. There's really not much I disagree with in the Lynch movie's pronunciation of most names and terms, other than Chani. My personal preference is a hard "C" and the "h" is silent, so neither the movie nor miniseries matches the sound in my mind when I read her name. Frank Herbert made a recording a long time ago in which he discussed the pronunciation of some of the terms in the novel. I don't know if that is still available, as it wasn't on KZread where I heard it. "Matre", I think, should be pronounced as "Mater" - as in the Latin word, with a long "a". There are many words that are pronounced the same no matter the order of the last two letters (consider the English pronunciation of words like "liter" and "litre"; in English Canada they're pronounced the same, although some people prefer the French spelling).
