Ultimate Air Manifold System (DIY) - GX 460 470 or 5th Gen Onboard Air

Ultimate Air Manifold System (DIY) - GX 460 or 5th Gen Air Manifold Build
In this video we’re wrapping up the series on my onboard air system build out with this video on the onboard air manifold. This system will work on GX 460, GX 470 or 5th generation 4 runner and costs a bit under $350 including the compressor and mounting tray. Enjoy!

Here's a list of the parts I used to make the SmittyBilt pressure switch Mod (Attempt at your own risk):
UPDATE: Using the 2780 for a year now we've realized that it's a bit under powered for our set-up. No problem getting to 35PSI, but going to 40psi can trigger the thermal cut off after 3-3.5 32" tires. We're upgrading to the 2781 soon and a viewer verified it will fit in the same spot. I would recommend the larger 2781 or similar if doing this project. It's only $30-50 more.
SmittyBilt 2781:

SmittyBilt 2780:
amzn.to/3oz21Ut
Metric to NPT Adapter needed to replace the primary hose attached to the SmittyBilt 2780:
amzn.to/2Tj9N6u
NPT 3-way T:
amzn.to/3oqeGcj
Pressure Switch:
I used 70-100 for safety but you could probably go with a 90-120PSI switch since the compressor is rated to 150 PSI.
amzn.to/3mnN4Tj
Solder Heat Shrink kit:
amzn.to/2HwKtam
Air Compressor Leader Hose with check Valve:
amzn.to/2YdNv8E
Air compressor Quick Disconnects multi-pack:
amzn.to/2FWhcWh
You'll also need 12" of scrap 14-16 gauge wire (low amps between the switch and relay) and two female quick disconnect connectors which you can get in a kit like this: amzn.to/2TmIFn4
The above is all you need to add the pressure switch. The plumbing is essentially in the order that the parts are listed above, starting at the metric female thread in the Smittybilt which will be exposed when you remove the existing leader hose.
From there you can use an existing airline and inflator like the ARB kit or go a step farther and convert the yellow airline to a latch on closed flow style like I did. You'll need to add a quick disconnect from the kit above to one end and a clip on chuck to the other. For that you'll need the following:
3/16″ Barb to 1/4″ NPT Male Thread:
amzn.to/3jrD3mf
Air Chuck:
amzn.to/3mbqAVs
If you plan to go the distance and install under the hood you might want to build a manifold like I did. This will also allow you to add a pressure gauge.
Viair 1/4" NPT Manifold:
amzn.to/2HrtwOB
1/4" NPT Ball Valves (One for compressor shutoff, one for bleeding out pressure)
amzn.to/3qTyWDg
1/4" NPT plug:
amzn.to/37CTslf
Digital Pressure Gauge:
amzn.to/31Grtxg
Good luck!

    Update compressor 5.65 CFM installation on GX460-2015: It works...I installed Egoi Air Compressor from Overland Vehicle Systems (manufacturing specification is same as Smittybilt 2781) and manifold system per your Vid. I found that the original bottom plate can be use by fabricate two support brackets.

    After running this setup for quite a while have you had any issues with the hose from the compressor to the manifold getting too hot next to other components?

  • @WastingTimeInTheWoods

    @WastingTimeInTheWoods

    27 күн бұрын

    No. Pump overheats once in a while if I try to go 40 psi in on a hot day. No issues with components though. Would do a 2781 if I did it again but too many other projects to tackle at the moment.

    I switched to a measure man analog guage after digital died this year. I like the analog a lot better. Jumps around less and no batteries to manage. Here’s the one I bought - amzn.to/3Kf8bWL

    great project you have inspired me to do this project in my Tacoma. Question is it necessary to have a check valve on the leader hose?

  • @WastingTimeInTheWoods

    @WastingTimeInTheWoods

    No. And now that I think about it the check valve upstream of the manual shutoff seems pointless. Probably increases restart pressure too… I think.

    Looks like the one I have is only available up to 60 psi currently - amzn.to/3Ow0pr4. This one is 300 psi so might not be as accurate- amzn.to/3y5Hz2S either should work but if you’re doing the pressure switch I’d go with the higher one. Or go analog - amzn.to/3a32Y50

    @@WastingTimeInTheWoods yeah i got my pressure switch on the smitybilt. Gonna just go with the 60 psi one for accuracy. Im gonna run it on my manifold like yours. Thanks a million.

    Would there have been room to mount the compressor standing up? I have a 4X3" relay box I would like to squeeze into the same space.

  • @WastingTimeInTheWoods

    @WastingTimeInTheWoods

    3 жыл бұрын

    I doubt it. You could mount it on top of the factory fuse box as a lot of people do or you could try to under-mount it. Powertrays has a top mount plate that probably would have worked and has more room underneath.

    if one were to do the manifold setup on an ARB twin compressor, the pressure switch still has to be installed right?

  • @WastingTimeInTheWoods

    @WastingTimeInTheWoods

    Yeah but the arb comes with a pressure switch and harnesses/relay so it will be much easier.

    Super cool set up. If you were to add air lockers, would you put it before or after the manifold you made? Also, the ball valve on the manifold is to release the extra air trapped in there after the ball valve right before the manifold right?

  • @WastingTimeInTheWoods

    @WastingTimeInTheWoods

    Thanks! I don't know much about air lockers but I have been thinking that I would much prefer an e-locker if I went for lockers (doubt I will). Acrad on iH8tMud is trying an elocker on his GX so I'm following along to see how it goes for him. Yep, ball valve wit the black handle is dump valve to relieve pressure (from tires or the system). A lot of guys use the slide valve but they're special order and I'm not airing down from the manifold so I went with another ball valve because I had it.
