So, Lazerpig's comment about the Russian advanced compared to the speed of a snail got me curious and so I decided to do some math. This isn't serious, it's just the calculations of just some random idiot on the internet. So I chose Luhansk Oblast because as far as I know it has a border with Russia on one end and the Ukrainian frontline on the other, and is currently occupied completely by Russia. Luhansk Oblast has a width from east to west of about 190 km. The average speed of a snail is about 0.048 km/h. Taking the 8760 hours in one year, and assuming the snail is continuing in a straight path without sleep for that year, a snail could then cover around 422.232 km in one year. Conclusion: A snail is moving twice as fast as the Russian offensive.

Exactly, Ukraine, getting 40 tanks from the west, isn’t going to change anything, especially when all of the resources to maintain those tanks needs to be built from scratch inside Ukraine. We are talking about a population of 150 million against a population of probably 34 million at this point the sanctions aren’t hurting Russia anywhere near the extent that people were convinced they would, most of the world isn’t even taking part in the sanctions because they view this as a war between NATO, led by the United States and Russia, with Ukraine, stuck in the middle. Russia will not, and cannot let Crimea fall into the hands of NATO, because that cuts off, rushes access to the Black Sea, and the Mediterranean, which is what this entire war is about in the first place.

I used to work in futures war gaming as an Army contractor. Every single exercise somebody suggested a spider tank. No, stop, not going to happen. It would derail everything. Arguments about logistics, complexity, whether it would be able to hop, but what if it had wheels on the legs... we ended up seeding it in the first hour with a comment making fun of it so people wouldn't focus on it. I even remember saying to someone that "I don't believe we can win, but if we take back Kherson, than I'll change my mind". Not only was Kherson taken back, but also all of Kharkiv oblast, much more than I initially hoped for. So I like to think our military command and our troops have gained a lot of credit. I have the impression that people are going out of their way to tone down expectations to the point where I think it's a deliberate information strategy. Some even express doubt there will be an offensive at all. That's ridiculous. We haven't seen any of the new weapon systems on the frontline. Which means they are somewhere, getting prepared. I am not saying they are going to somehow overrun the russians, they had far to much time to dig in, but if one of the fronts breaks like during the kherson offensive this going to be a real shitshow for the russians.

@@shivanshna7618 Dude, I can't help you if you can't do the math. Ukraine lost 539 tanks visually confirmed. Say the true number is 900. Ukraine had 900 active tanks at the start of the war plus 1,600 mothballed. Ukraine's allies refurbished many of these stored tanks. Ukraine got many hundreds of Soviet era tanks from Western countries like Poland, Germany, and even the US plus a couple hundred Western tanks plus Ukraine is visually confirmed as capturing 541 Russian tanks. 1,600 plus say 400 plus 541 plus 200 is close to 3,000 and that's just tanks. Ukraine also has lots of APCs, IFVs, etc. Say the active-duty force at the start of the war minus losses cancel. And yes, not all of these tanks would be recoverable or are in working order, but Ukraine's partners have been working overtime to repair and refurbish them. Ukraine has WAY MORE than 3,000 armored vehicles but that's what's allocated to their current offensive. I've seen the picture of tank columns many miles long. Russia is on defense now because they burned through all their offensive capability. Ukraine that was mostly on defense kept more of their armored vehicles safe.

Anybody who has to do presentations for a living- high schoolers, college students, business professionals, really anyone- should watch this video on how to do a group presentation correctly. Graphical aids, like the Ukraine map, are actually useful. Sildes with bulletpoints as headliners for discussion, rather than just a list you're reading off of. Even at 21:53, where there's just a title slide that says "Where will Ukraine strike?", you didn't just repeat out loud what the slide says; you used the question as a thesis to present follow-up or detailed questions. %105/100 +5 bonus points for bringing in a talking pig

On the subject of the Russian nuclear arsenal, Tritium, which is an expensive and important component in nuclear weapons, has a half-life of about 12 years. The Soviet Union collapsed 32 years ago, and since then, their army and economy has been in a perpetual state of decline. I would never want to role the dice on this, and I don’t think anyone should. Tritium is produced as a byproduct by their nuclear powerplants, which are still very much operational. Also, their nuclear deterrent is absolutely crucial to their defense. I think even among all the corruption and incompetence, they would have their nuclear forces as a priority. Finally, their nuclear maintenance facilities are open to weapons inspectors. If they weren't being well maintained, the Americans would know. So they are very heavily incentivised to make sure they do. With all that in mind, I would put good odds on at least a significant portion of the Russian nuclear arsenal being functional.

With that mindset, the goal is to get within artillery range of those rail lines in the south, so they can't be used. That seems very viable.

there is a lot of political pressure for something "big" though. a slow, grinding war is poison to keeping support up. I don't think ukrainians have the luxury to decide from a purely military strategic standpoint.

@@dmks2146 On the contrary, I think they do. The Ukrainian identity itself is on the line here, and what's happening now is basically what happened to the UK during the Blitz. All they're doing is making the population angrier and more willing to put up with even more shit just to make sure the other guy gets kicked out.

@@dmks2146 I don't know, though. Western support, despite being slow, still doesn't show signs of pulling back down anytime soon, despite some divisive popular pressures. I don't think Ukraine can afford to just sit there forever and grind down the Russians in a static trench war forever, and it *sure* would be all the better if it gets its stuff together and do a reasonable push forward to keep and uplift political morale abroad. But I also don't think it needs to be something ultra spetacular on the level of the Kharkiv offensive to gather the eyes of the world towards it, so long as it shows it's still on the fight and that it has promisses for future operations. Whether this actually becomes true remains unknown and is yet to be seen, of course.
