Ukraine Independence Referendum Anniversary: 23 years since Ukrainians voted to be independent state
It has been 23 years since Ukrainians voted in a referendum to declare their independence from the Soviet Union. The referendum, held on December 1, 1991, received overwhelming support across Ukraine, with each region voting in favour of declaring Ukraine an independent state.
The vote was the culmination of months of independence movements across the Soviet Republic and showed huge support for a declaration of independence issued by the Ukrainian parliament on August 24.
Students and activists had held rallies throught the year calling for independence from Moscow.
The referendum asked a simple question: Do you support the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine? The entire Soviet Union was soon dissolved, on December 25.

In March 1991 people of Ukraine voted to stay in the USSR (75%). In December 1991 people of Ukraine did not vote for independence of Ukraine. There was no such question. The question was about "more independence" (but within the USSR). "within the USSR" was not mentioned explicitly but I remember how Kravchuk was saying "more independence" still means "within USSR". That is why even 90% of Crimea voted for Ukraine's "more independence". Nobody expected that Ukrainian burocrats would turn "more independence" into "Bandera rules". In 25 years the truth came back. 97% people of Crimea voted to go home to Russia. This is only the beginning for Ukraine.
