"We'll have a better life" - Ukraine on the Eve of Independence (1991)

"We'll have a better life in an independent Ukraine, we'll have everything."
One year on from Russia's invasion of Ukraine, ITN Archive looks back through to the beginnings of Ukrainian independence.
On 29 November 1991, ITN's Gaby Rado reported from Kyiv as Ukraine prepared for a referendum on national independence. The Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine's parliament) had, on 24 August 1991, adopted the Act of Declaration of Independence, which declared the Ukrainian SSR to be separate from the Soviet Union. Before the act could be realised, it was put to the people in a nationwide referendum. This report captures the nation's capital shortly before referendum day and includes interviews with fans watching Dynamo Kyiv play in the European Cup.
On 1 December 1991 - three days after this report - voters were asked, "Do you support the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine?" In a vote saw the participation of 84.18% of Ukraine's electorate, 92.3% voted "Yes".

Today, it can be said that their belief has come true, as the 'victory in 3 days' plan has not worked.

For 23 years life was better. Grandma grew up on a farm and worked as a 6 year old. After the collapse of the USSR and until 2014 she had a business as well as got her flat renovated, Mum was able to study in Britain in the 90s (before getting married and staying), and a lot of friends and relatives bought land built themselves very nice homes. Life was for a short time better (in a few cases, a little better then Britain, but infinitely better than Russia) though Russia made things hard, left a huge hole in the economy, and now invaded and destroyed life... Thank god we were able to bring some of our family here to Britain

0:45 "We will have a better life. We will have everything". Poor guy thought brighter days were ahead. Imagine him spending the final years of his life seeing his country sinking in to an abyss.😢

Actually the standards of living in independent Ukraine were higher than in the last years of the Soviet Union, so technically he is correct, although the outcome was different from what people expected to have.
