1991: Ukraine's Declaration of Independence

To mark Ukrainian Independence Day, ITN Archive is presenting three reports from 1990-91, charting the rise of the Ukrainian independence movement amid the disintegration of the USSR.
The third of these reports is from 26 August 1991, two days after Ukraine's declaration of independence from the Soviet Union. The report captures the separatist momentum in Ukraine overtaking Gorbachev's attempts to recover Soviet unity in the wake of the failed coup of 19-22 August.

@@ChristopherGray00Ukrainians are a country full of corruption and hatred. They persecuted all the minorities in their country, they are ruthless and now they cry for Wests help. They should desintegrate as a country. Also, we will never forget Ukrainians were the most cruel guards of the nazi concentration camps.

They voted for the New Union Treaty, which was to democratise the USSR, turning it into a state similar to a more federalised version of the EU, with it's own army. When the August Coup happened, Ukrainians realised that Communist Party hardliners in Moscow wouldn't ever let them democratise. Then Ukraine voted to leave the USSR, with 92% of the population voting to leave (Yes, even Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea, which Putin claims are indesputably Russian)
