I drove to Nepal, via India, from London in the 70s. Drove all over India. Wild camping, in tents, most of the way. I always say, if you only ever visit one country in your life, it should be India. Robert Louis Stevenson would have spelt traveler as traveller!

Water. Be very careful what kind of water you drink in India. Only drink from "unopened bottled water/soda/fizz whatever" and do not put in ice in your drinks. Spent 1 week in the toilet after drinking water from a carafe in a restaurant

We’ve been to India twice, like you, our first reaction was shock, but once you get into the swing of it, I’m sure you will love it. The colours are amazing and the people so welcoming and friendly. We joked that India will be lovely when it’s finished… as you venture onwards through India you will know what I mean. I’m really looking forward to your Indian adventure. Hygiene is not really their thing so I’d be careful about eating meat in particular, delicious though it might be at the time it can come back to bite you a few hours later! @@TREADtheglobe you are in for a pure treat. I've done most of that road. Jaisalmer fort is a unique beauty you need to allow time to soak in. I spent 4 days and didn't tire of it, personally. I hope you're stopping in Agra and Jaipur at least. The road runs through the great Thar desert. This is no joke. It's a wilder area. Some roads if you travel near dark there are bandits who will 100% kill you not just rob you. Don't stop for someone. They take their role as bandits very seriously and won't be brought off or placated. In fact they find the attempt insulting according to my guide. If you are caught offer to join them is apparently the only chance you have. Then you hope for a police or military rescue. I think there is a movie about a woman who survived this by doing so. Not fiction, but hopefully the situation has changed for the better in 10 years. Sunroof? Close it if you don't want a big cat jumping in if you drive under trees. Plus the desert? If you break down it can be life-threatening. So those are major risks. The experience? My lifetime best. Carry a huge supply of bottled water and drink it. Double or triple the amount you think you need to carry. Have food on board. Make sure Trudi is tip top for sand. Sometimes it gets swept across the road. Roads can disappear entirely. If possible, again, a local guide is valuable. Mine took me to an amazing ruined temple in the jungle between Udaipur and Jaipur. Not signposted at all. Just phenomenal, like being on an impossible movie set in real life, and it was just us. Please do small legs as this allows you room to recover when things go wrong and to be in great shelter before late afternoon and after early morning. Plus, this is a time and place to smell the flowers and soak it in. It's very much once in a lifetime. Go for it! 😀 You could visit the Tiger reserve.

India is like no other country on earth. I travelled there first in 1996, a forty six year old white American woman alone, with a backpack and Lonely Planet guide. I ranged from Mussoorie on the border of Tibet down to Kerala down south, although I centered a chunk of my travels all over Rajasthan. I wanted to experience the India that everyday Indians did, so stayed at the same rooming houses and little local hotels that they did, where sometimes I had to request a bucket of hot water for the cold water only shared showers. The poverty, dirt, trash and lack of Western sanitation methods was shocking, although I managed to never get sick. There was barely any internet, and often the power was down so the few who had it, mostly big businesses like major airline booking offices, couldn't access the rudimentary and slow dialup service, anyway. When I got back, people would ask "Did you have fun in India?" and I told them that India is a country that most travelers don't associate the word "fun" with as a description of their trip. It was wonderful anyway, people were kind and the local people I met were gracious and welcoming. It was eye opening about the reality of our world.

I am from India. My first comment, Kolkatta, was a wrong choice. You should have used Chennai as a port of entry and also to ship your van. Your experience would have been much different. I don't know how you plan to travel out. But Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujrat, and Rajasthan onwards towards the north would have taken you through a better experience, both driving as well as places to see. I presume you either plan to drive into Pakistan or ship your van once again to Iran or other countries in that region.

Your hotel at 2am was reminiscent of my arrival in Beijing. Was a huge hotel but the all the lights were off and reception staff were asleep behind the counter. I had to bang on the revolving door entry for 10 minutes to wake them up! India can make and break a traveller from experience. It is the land of extreme duality but you'll get used to it. Safe travels.

I relate to so much of this video, in the '80s I traveled from the United States to Malaysia and then to India for 6 months, I also arrived at 3:00 in the morning and stayed at one of the absolute worst hotels, it was frightening. The sheets were filthy and the surroundings were desolate. Imagine trying to navigate all this before there were cell phones and internet, and I was also a teenager. I feel this video!

Wowsers !! My Auntie Julia did an around the world trip backpacking in 1967 and she told me it was tougher to navigate without technology - but she said she is grateful that she didn't have to deal with the complications of moving a foreign vehicle across borders and all the visa restrictions .... but we are grateful to be on the road and to be able to keep going .... 🌺🚐🌷

This brought back memories of my first trip to India in 1997. And like you, arrived in Kolkata or Calcutta back then, at night. Felt surreal looking at the streets during the drive from the airport. It was daunting at first. And hated the massive crowd and dust. But the city grew on me. Despite the poverty, people I met were the nicest and most memorable in all my travels. And I grew to love waking up to the sounds of the hustle and bustle of the city. Stayed at Sudder Street 😊

I've only spent a few weeks in India. I got bored so I bought a bicycle and cycled most days. People thought I was mad. I just followed the locals, go with the flow - if that meant going down the hard shoulder of a dual carriageway on the wrong side because it was easier than crossing, I would. I found that whilst it's busy, crazy, at the end of the day, no one is actually out to kill anyone on the road! Take your time, go with the flow.

Hi Your are so right about India, a place of contrasting lives and places. I've been many times volunteering with colleagues from the NHS. You are experienced traveller's so you know when your gut tells you something is wrong. A few tips, don't accept damaged bank notes and check for forgeries (200 rp) most common. The money is dirty, so sanitise your hands a lot! Driving at night is very dangerous, and forget the highway code! It's basically everyone for themselves. Any things goes. Avoid open shoes. The food is amazing, but be mindful of where you buy it from. Red tape is an Olympic sport in India. Enjoy the trip :) Can't wait for your updates. Have a great time. 👍

The refrigerant level in your air con should never be low unless you have a leak. Next time get the mechanic to check for leaks with a refigerant leak detector. It maybe a joint or a poor seal somewhere. Good luck
