I unfortunately married a Muslim, and moved to a Muslim country. I did not convert but I was told that is they found out I was Jewish they would kill me. This is not some 1800 historical story, thus was 2009. Islam as a religion is false. It's an ideology. The culture for the 99.9% majority of these countries are approx 500 years, behind evolution and the fast pace of the world. Women are typically either uneducated or have degrees. No middle ground. Either westernised or not. The 2 cannot work together, it really is that simple of an answer

Those 9th graders who premeditatedly plotted schemed to have their teacher fired are NOT innocent. Sadly, you said, "We were reluctant to blame the children". Good god, man, the foolishness of such a statement. I have taught chemistry for 35 years, and such students are crafty. They knew exactly what they were doing. Previously, you told us that the students wanted him to be denounced. So, contradict yourself by suggesting they are not responsible for his sacking. They are indeed morally reprehensible, guilty, and accountable. We have excused this behaviour, at society's peril, for far too long.

@user-et9zf3ne5p You are exactly right to point out that there ought to be due process in place-well, at least here in Canada, there indeed is the right to due process. Therefore, this could not actually happen here in Canada. This could not happen unless there was an investigation and it was brought before a tribunal-if it even got that far. Such a case would fail. Believe me, I have been down many such roads. I was shocked that there was no actual process in place. After all, the Canadian system is mirrored in the British system.

Such laws are not law in this secular island. We need some constitutional clarity. Urgently. Blashpemy is not illegal here. We tolerate the intolerant. But we must clarify our laws that publicise, promote and defend our free expression and freedom of thought values. At a constitutional level. Intolerant people who make threats or use violence towards the tolerant, just because they got offended, must be punished. Violence and intimidation by an intolerant, non-inclusive, homophobic, right wing ideology cannot be tolerated within this inclusive tolerant society. Islam is like something from the dark ages. Islam doesn't allow music, dancing, art on your walls, being creative, satirising of ourselves and our beliefs. If it had another name we'd be far more vocal about such an oppressive belief system that prevents cultural, social and psychological evolution. All religions suck, but the most boring one of all is the worst. Women have a crap time in Islam. But gay people? Poor buggers! (pun intended). We must be aware of, and defend our liberal values.

How do people even have the gal to question why kids feel they’ve so much power in schools and why they act out in such disgraceful manners, worst than ever before, when it’s so obviously tied to things like this by allowing kids to feel they can rid themselves of a teacher, get excused from class and be permitted to not participate by simply mentioning that they’re offended? You’re creating this problem by consistently validating their emotions and allowing them to believe their emotions trump everything. It’s no wonder the world in disorder.

I worked as a consultant with public servants at an “iconic”, easily identifiable public service in Central London for way too many years. Public servants come in two flavours: totally incompetent or utterly lazy. Often both. All are utterly spineless and hang their flag in the wind any day of the week. At the “iconic” civil service, all work was done by consultants. Despite the bickering, the civil service is surprisingly well-funded. Ironically, the top brass always talked about reducing consultants to reduce costs. The efficient approach would have been to let the public servants go and to keep only the consultants. Therefore, I am not the slightest surprised that the school sacrificed the teacher instead of standing up. Talking endlessly about woke ideals is much easier than doing any work, serving the public or “doing the right thing”. Never mind standing up for British values. I am so glad I got away from this swamp.

I suspect the reason the people do not speak out is simply due to fear. Say one thing wrong and never work again? That is enough to provoke fear, fear for peoples' livelihoods or the safety of their children. We also see a state with two tier policing that will come down firmly on the side of the offended. The example I give is the mother forced to apologise in the "scuffed Koran" incident. The police are alleged to have taken the women to apologise.

There was an article in last week's Sunday Times comment section. This was written by a teacher who chose to remain anonymous, probably because of the Batley grammar school case. The author wrote about how he/she asked the class how many people hated Britain and thirty hands shot up. It made for depressing reading. To my mind there is no remedy to this. They have nearly finished their school career but have learnt nothing of their host nation. This is a lost generation who are highly unlikely to do anything positive for our country. People will say "Oh, it's a minority view" but as the teacher wrote it was a very large minority. Furthermore there is no condemnation from the supposed Islamic majority. There is only one solution and that is to do what the Spanish did when it expelled the Moor.s Will it happen? Never. The West had a renaissance once. It brought great art, music and cultural enrichment. We are now on course for a second renaissance that will strip all of that away. We can't complain, since 1997 we voted for it. I didn't but I believe in democracy. I couldn't stand Blair from the outset, I thought John Smith was an honourable man but Blair was a poor successor. Still he had won a mandate and I accepted it The trouble is, democracy only works when people care for the country. We now have increasing millions of British citizens able to vote. Soon they will have their own political party and our democratic system will be our undoing. If Labour get in Blair will be able finally to nail our coffin shut
