UK: RAF NORTHOLT: PRINCE CHARLES RETURNS WITH BODY OF PRINCESS DIANA

(31 Aug 1997) English/Nat
The British heir to the throne, Prince Charles, brought Princess Diana home for the last time on Sunday, escorting the body of his former bride back to a shocked and grieving nation.
The princess was killed when her car, pursued by paparazzi photographers, crashed in a Paris traffic tunnel in the early hours of Sunday.
The grim-faced prince and the flag-draped coffin were flown in from France to a Royal Air Force base outside London, just 16 hours after Princess Diana succumbed to her fatal injuries.
The coffin bearing the body of Princess Diana, who was killed in a fatal car crash in Paris, was flown back home to Britain on Sunday night.
The nation's leaders, including Prime Minister Tony Blair, were at the Northolt Air Force base for a sombre ceremony marking the nation's tragic loss.
The Prince of Wales had flown to Paris on Sunday afternoon with Diana's two sisters, Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale, to bring back the remains of the woman he divorced last year after 15 years of marriage.
Diana died from injuries suffered when her automobile, pursued by paparazzi photographers, crashed in a Paris traffic tunnel.
The accident also claimed the lives of the 36-year-old princess's boyfriend, millionaire film producer Dodi Fayed, and their chauffeur.
The couple's bodyguard survived the crash. he's in hospital and doctors say his injuries are not life-threatening.
After the jet bearing Princess Diana's body landed under grey skies at the Northolt air base, a Royal Air Force honour guard carried the coffin, draped in the multicolored Royal Standard, to a waiting hearse.
Seven photographers who were detained immediately after the crash, which occurred in a tunnel at the Pont de l'Alma, just north of the Eiffel Tower, were placed in formal custody on Sunday afternoon.
French police said the accident investigation would be handled by a special unit usually assigned to high-priority terrorism cases.
Diana often had complained of being plagued by the paparazzi - the commercial photographers who had trailed her since she entered the public eye as a shy young woman.
Following the honour guard ceremony at the air force base, Princess Diana's grieving sisters accompanied her coffin back to London and to a private mortuary.
Prince Charles reboarded the plane following the ceremony and flew on to Balmoral, to comfort his two grieving sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

LOL! Charles did this collecting of her body because he didn't want to appear as the aweful Husband he had been depicted to the press, nothing more. Even the Queen felt it wasn't their responsibilty after all she was no longer Royal! Even her Statement to the people was forced from Tony Blair the Prime minister. Not because they wanted too, or because they felt they should, it was out of fear the Monarchy might crumble if they didn't respond! People in the streets were angry that even in death Diana was still treated like trash! She represented the British people as far as the world was concern. And the Monarchy just couldn't stand the attention was off of them. As they say Karma has a way of coming back to bite you, I await that moment for them. People loving someone other then their Queen! Diana just wanted to be loved. She didn't care by whom, she had hoped her Husband Charles would love her. But she deserved to be happy, and not critized for not meeting Royal traditions. And maybe if you could've not chose her for just bearing children, and actually loved her she would've been everything she wanted to be for the house of Windsor!

Oh please. After investigations by France, Britain, and the US (and I still can’t figure out why the US got involved) not to mention a million or so journalists, you still think the Queen or the Government had anything to do with her death? Why would they want to kill her? Diana wasn’t going to marry Dodi and even if she was, so? She was involved with that doctor for years and the Royal Family didn’t care. Diana (nor Charles, for that matter) was not the legal guardian of the boys, the Queen was. Diana wasn’t likely to leave England for good without the boys and she couldn’t take them if she did . And she knew that. Actually they probably would have been thrilled if she’d married again because they wouldn’t have had to keep paying her and watching her manipulate the press. Diana did a lot of good things but she also had a lot of issues and she did use the press for her own purposes.

The US was involved because our president at that time had Princess Diana’s phone bugged. It was over the land mines. That’s how the US got involved. I don’t know for sure what happened that night nor does anyone else who wasn’t involved. But when someone, anyone, tells people that they are going to be killed and how it will happen and then it happens I think you have to go with murder. She told at least 3 people what was going to happen.

You would think that Diana's Mother might have tripped up to see her Daughter being brought home, but no, she sent the cavalry, wonder what Charles was thinking that day, he's so closed off to emotions and feelings. I remember Liz and Phil came back from being away for 6 months in Africa or somewhere, Charles was about Three or Four. As the train arrived, Liz got out and shook hands with this tiny weeny child, her Son, this was in the late 50s or so,I thought what's that about, he never changed, insular, guarded and cold, just like his mum. Diana knew she would die in a car crash, how did she know, and Charlie boy married Camilla, that was a bad day for me and millions of other people. Princess Grace, Sarah Fergusons Mother, they died in car crashes too, how ironic. Feel so sorry for Mohammed Fayad, and would could have been.

I read that the Queen was adamant at first that nobody from the Royal family pick up Diana's body, as she was no longer a member of the family. (Never mind Diana was the mother of a future King). The Queen was adamant to such a point that one of her aides asked, "Ma'am, would you rather she come back in a Harrod's van?". That was the one and only time that Prince Charles stood up to his mother and insisted that he would be the the one to bring Diana's body home. Odd, isn't it, that in death Charles showed Diana more love and respect than in her life. If he had, maybe they would never have divorced, and Diana would still be with us, and how she would just LOVE her grandchildren! But she is no longer with us, and Charles gets to enjoy his grandchildren. That is SO unfair to Diana, and it makes me angry when I see Charles and Camilla enjoying the good life.

Charles was not a flawless husband. But he was devastated when she passed. He may not have been in love with her. But he did love her. They developed a friendship after some time. And they were co-parenting. And despite his mistakes as a husband, he's been a good father.
