The heir to the British throne, Prince Charles came to Paris on Sunday to collect the body of his former wife, Diana, Princess of Wales.
Together with Diana's two sisters, a sombre-looking Prince Charles arrived at the hospital where Princess Diana died in the early hours of Sunday morning.
They were greeted by French President Jacques Chirac and his wife, Bernadette.
The grim-faced prince then escorted the flag-draped coffin back to a Royal Air Force base outside London, just 16 hours after Princess Diana was tragically killed in a Paris car crash. The Prince later travelled to Balmoral to be with his children.
Prince Charles flew to Paris on Sunday to collect the body of his former wife Princess Diana who was killed in a car crash in the early hours of Sunday morning. He was greeted warmly by the French President Jacques Chirac and his wife, Bernadette.
The funeral cortege passed along the streets of Paris, lined with well wishers. Prince Charles and Diana's two sisters, Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale, escorted the coffin back to England.
Prominent public figures, including Prime Minister Tony Blair, were at the Royal Air Force air base at Northolt for a sombre ceremony marking the nation's tragic loss.
Diana died from injuries suffered when her Mercedes limousine, pursued by paparazzi photographers, crashed in a Paris traffic tunnel.
The accident also claimed the lives of the 36-year-old princess's boyfriend, millionaire film producer Dodi Fayed, and their chauffeur.
The couple's bodyguard survived the crash. He is in hospital and doctors say his injuries are serious, but not life-threatening.
Seven photographers were detained immediately after the crash, which occurred in a tunnel at the Pont de l'Alma, just north of the Eiffel Tower.
They were placed in formal custody on Sunday afternoon.
The accident investigation will be handled by a special unit more used to dealing with high priority terrorism cases.
After the jet bearing Princess Diana's body landed under grey skies at the Northolt air base, a Royal Air Force honor guard carried the coffin, draped in the multicoloured Royal Standard, to a waiting hearse.
Following the ceremony by members of the Queen's Colour Squadron at the airforce base, Princess Diana's grieving sisters accompanied her coffin back to London and to a private mortuary. Her body was subsequently moved to the chapel in St James's Palace.
Prince Charles reboarded the plane following the ceremony and flew on to Aberdeen. He then drove to the family home at Balmoral, to comfort his two grieving sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

No one ever acknowledges the raw grief and the bravery of Diana’s two sisters. I imagine the hardest task of their lives to go and view their younger sister’s body and bring her back home.
Despite their stressed relationship , I'm vary glad the " Prince of Wales " went to Paris France to bring his former wife home . It was the right thing to do !

Absolutely! As The Prince of Wales and future King of England, it was very much the right thing to do on this stressful, sad day. Diana, Princess of Wales was the mother of a future King, and should be taken home in this manner. What else could he have done? This situation was absolutely unprecedented, and he had to act quickly, knowing he would be damned if he did and damned if he didn’t.

At first, Queen Elizabeth II didn't want anybody from the Royal Family to pick up Diana's body, because technically, she was no longer a Royal. Prince Charles argued with his mother with such conviction she finally allowed him to go. Apparently the Queen forgot that Diana was the mother of the princes William and Harry, and the mother of a future king.

Everyone says bad things about the way charles treated diana but here i just see a father doing the right thing by the mother of his children no matter what 😢

If there's ONE thing I can't ABIDE, it's Hypocrisy. Charles who never loved Diana ONE little bit during her life, there in Paris looking as if he was overcome with grief and would never be happy again. I can understand Diana's two sisters grieving and shocked, but Charles? NEVER in a month of Sundays. Now he's all dear darling Diana, now she's gone. I cannot feel an ounce of sympathy for him. I really can't.

Very sad to see her sisters in so much pain outside the hospital, but it was Prince Charles the one who was receiving the condoleances while they were fighting back tears. So unfair, everything in Diana’s life was so unfair.

Losing a mother in a younger age is very painful..I lost my mother at the age of 6years. My dad married again and I lost my step mom in 2019.. It’s devastating to see her casket being carried knowing Princess Diana isn’t on this earth anymore. The amazing energy she emulated is gone. You can just feel the shift. I was 9 years ago at the time of Diana's death and I can remember on the day of her funeral how quit my household and community was. Time stood still as we watched her funeral procession.
After 25 years these images still reduce me to tears!!! Poor poor girl. Really she never stood a chance. And now we have a Queen Camilla. Somehow it just doesn't seem right. Time is a wonderful thing they say. Dear Diana God Rest your soul 💖

From day one Princess Diana was treated like a second hand person. Charles kept on having his affair with Camilla. The Queen insisting on Diana to have her babies at Buckingham Palace, insisting on Diana not to fly with William in a plane, on and on. Diana became a very strong women and broke all the rules. She showed them and did exactly what she wanted to do. You go girl, you went. I am still in disbelief she is dead and in such a horrible way. I will miss her for the rest of my life. I read every single book, I can get my hands on! If only Charles would have been faithful, things may have turned out differently, don't know. May God bless her and Queen Elizabeth! I truly believe Queen Elizabeth, died of a broken heart, losing the Duke so soon. I really believe there is such a thing as that. My Granmother died shortly after my Grandfather, and she was in good health . I took off work, with 3 days pay, to see Diana marry Charles, and the same thing with her funeral. Over a billion other people watched too. Diana got in over her head but came back fighting. I read, if you could get a picture of her and Dodi Fayed kissing, it was worth a $1,000,000.The paparazzi just went too far this time and I belive they had alot to do with it, even though, the driver was legally drunk. I will always wonder if it was a conspiracy or not! God bless to all!

Always wondered if her boys were able to see her in her casket and felt like they should have (maybe they did) to help them with some sort of closure. I dislike the word "closure" but my nephew was brutally murdered however, the mortuary was able to put him together so that we could view his body and that helped a little bit. RIP Princess Diana! ❤️

his kids mother had died! That's soo rude to say, Diana and Charles had mended their relationship before her death, if not romantically or anything else but he did grieve her death his kids lost their mother.
