The biggest reason for regular cap jams is the modern handling of cap and ball revolvers in addition to range requirements for safety. The revolver that has the least cap jams is the Spiller and Burr. The double spring method shown here is the best known fix, consider caliper grease between the springs. Super video sir!
Just about everyone I have talked to who bought an Uberti Model 1849 Pocket revolver has had issues with them, one thing or another. Mine literally wouldn't stay on half cock new out of the box, I ended up having to replace the hammer. The timing wasn't great and I swapped out the nipples on mine to Amco nipples and it works fine. The barrel wedge doesn't sit in very well, it's loose. I bought a second new wedge from Uberti, it was looser than the one that came with the gun, so I peened the one wedge some and that makes it sit in the gun better. It took a bit or working to get it there but once I did it became a fairly decent shooter, but Uberti has had issues with these guns for years. I was lucky enough to get a stout mainspring in mine.
I use a length of 1/4 OD with a .170 ID vinyl tubing. The ID is perfect to trap a cap. I press a piece of the tubing over the cap and cut it so the cap now has a vinyl jacket that will 100% stop cap jams on any c&b revolver. The caps stay on the nipples and are captured by the vinyl jacket. The caps are even easier to put on and remove than they would be normally.
Two springs... that’s genius!

Lol your here
My first 1849 had a ton of cap jams. I found the fix in stoning the hammer face fixed the issue. My second one had no problems. But I definitely understand the hammer getting blown back on that first one.

Thanks for that. I thought I recalled someone recommending the face polishing in the past. I will definitely consider that if the Slixshot nipples and the double mainspring aren't sufficient to resolve the problem.
mark this is the exact same fix i came up with thanks for posting
Good to know about the Uberti mainspring. One other thing that I've noticed is that most Colt replicas have cap jam issues, and one thing that makes a huge difference is to hone the pin slot in the hammer nose. While not an obvious place to work on, slicking up that slot as much as possible really reduces cap jams.
I bought one of these last year. I do love the gone, but it needed a lot of work. I had to stone the hand to stop the over rotation. The nipples were simply too short to use if they were properly seated. And the hammer face had a large blob of metal on it that I had to remove with a file. It's fine now, but that gun never should have left the factory. Thanks for making these videos to show people how to correct the poor quality control we have to deal with these days.

I have just bought one of these and it acts like the hammer is moving forward just a little too little to impact the percussion caps with enough force to consistently get them to fire. What nipples have you found that work well?
I've never had the extreme blowback on my pocket model like you've had but it was still an issue. I tried track of the wolf nipples first, with great results but I haven't tried the treso yet but have them at the ready. After your 1860 army fluted Cylinder video I got one myself and noticed the nipples were near identical and well made, limited taper but unfortunately they had the largest vent hole I've ever seen on any nipple. When after firing I point the gun to the ground and then cock with a twist, this keeps me from having a cap jam. I only shoot on my farm so this is easily done. Mark, this was a super video with great information, I'll be trying this fix. Thanks!
I was leery about getting one of these until I watched your video on fixes for it. I've ordered one now and the parts your suggested. I went with the slikshot nibbles. Thanks for the insight on the problems.
I had the same issues with mine. I was able to make heavier main spring myself. Your double stack idea is great. I noticed on my Uberti 1849 pocket that the nipple pockets were different depths. The nipples were ending up too long and some were too short. That made me put a spacer washer under some and shorten the cone and reshape on two nipples. Now they all fire and the cap jams are minimal. Great video. I may order an additional cylinder and see if the nipple depth are more accurate
... something I learned using two pietta 1860's was to lighten my powder loads. Over charging or "maximum" charged loads will often result in hammers being blown back as well as charging rods being dropped as in your video. I reduced my charges from 30gr to 24gr with better results , still quite deadly...
I just ordered my 1st CnB & this was the only one available (the Wells Fargo so no loader). I did not know of these issues so THANK YOU for this generous instruction and for providing the link for parts!
Well done Mark, I enjoy your videos.
Great information- - excellent presentation and very concise instruction to fix this problem! Thanks for posting this ! Just a perfect video!
Thanks Mark! I don’t own this gun...yet... but I really enjoy learning all I can about bp guns.
Thank you, Mark! You have been a tremendous help with percussion revolvers.....tuning them, period bullets and cartridges, which all make the revolvers much more reliable and enjoyable to fire.
Excellent video Mark... Thanks for taking the time to make it.

Gary, thanks for the kind words.
Awesome! Thanks sir! I just bought a Uberti 1862 Pocket Navy and hopefully your info will help me with reliability.
Nice video and I like the doubling up the spring trick. Now I want one of these pocket revolvers.
Thank you. I've learned a lot from your channel.
Excellent demonstration.
Thanks for the cap jam tips
Very helpful information about that revolver thank you
I have a pocket Navy. I've only had the chance to fired it once since owning it, I did experience some of those issues. Thanks for the video, I have some parts to order
Looks like an interesting fix
Oh good to hear that Slix Shots will now fit this model!
Loved this video thank you
On the loading lever, don’t forget to snug the center screw prior to firing. I end up loosening the center screw to load and snugging it to fire. It can’t drop if it’s held tight.
Thanks a million Mark
Thank you very much for the tip.
using the fix that Bottom Dealing Mike recommends by filling the safety notch in the hammer with JB weld is another help. My 1862 new police has a cap guard installed in the frame and that is the ultimate fix. Thanks Mark for the video and the molds you have brought interesting bullets for these cap and ball guns..

How was the cap guard installed? The frame is very thin where the pin would go. Working on one right now & not sure pin will hold.
Thanks. Having the same problem with my Uberti 1862 Pocket Police and my 1862 Pocket Navy. The replacement nipples from Slixshot are on their way. If that doesn't resolve it, I will be ordering two extra mainsprings for them. So glad that you say there is a fix for this, because these are such cool little guns, and it would be a shame if they couldn't be made to be reliable.

@@therealhawkeyeii7888 OK, thanks for the info.
Excellent video ..i have the same pistol for along time. Never shot it. Now I have to check it out..
I have also used a standard Colt type mainspring and shortened it a little. The screw hole is the same but you may have to trim a small amount of metal on either side of that area to fit the one piece grips. This gives you an option of trying a standard or reduced power mainspring. The current stock Uberti mainspring is weakest right at the top under the hammer which is one reason for so much blow back.
Very nicely done. Well filmed and explained even with the tongue twisters - -hahahaha Thumbs Up !!!
All the Uberti replicas that I own have way too weak of mainsprings. This is a serious problem in my Remington revolving carbine since it generates a dangerous burst of gas and cap particles back at the shooter's face (eye protection probably saved my vision). The double mainspring workaround is ingenious! I'm going to try this fix in my carbine and hope that I can actually enjoy my shooting session with it.
I’ve always felt recent Uberti hammer springs were undersprung.
@therealhawkeyeii7888

You want to talk about undersprung mainsprings, try an Uberti 7th Cavalry SAA. The mainspring is so weak, it feels like a toy gun when you cock the hammer. It's a super thin piece of foil, basically. I called and complained about this (it just didn't feel right at all), and they sent me a normal power mainspring. Now it feels great, like a real SAA Colt.
Good video
The double spring is a smart idea my friend; I heartily approve. P.S. I would have put a dab of thick grease between the springs.
good info
Nice fix
I'm having the same issue with mine........ Come on Uberti!
Great video, I haven't got any cap n Ball revolvers now but always interested in them nevertheless.

Although you got new nipples so maybe it requires the 11 caps
Love the video, big fan. Where did you find Colt pocket springs
Quality content, thank you
Can this be done on other cap and ball revolvers?
Great video Mark, when these firearms were originally used, was cap jamming also a problem.Hard question to answer but I thought you might know.
@erasgonehistoricalmolds2400

Yes indeed, especially if the wrong caps were used. Colt revolvers like a cap made of thicker copper material to keep them from fragmenting. The sheet copper used in modern caps is much too thin which contributes to caps fragmenting and jamming up the guns.
@marcroche9324
3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I have an old tin of caps from the 1970's they have thicker metal cup. I don't remember cap jams when I used to shoot back then.
I tried this and had a problem of the top spring sliding off from the roller of the hammer.
Two springs and a set of Slixshot nipples along with polishing the hammer face and problem solved.
Have you tried polishing the hammer face and defanging it per Duelist 1954?
@erasgonehistoricalmolds2400

Yes, and it had very little effect on this gun. The mainspring was the main culpret.
Where did you get the second spring ?

I posted a website in the video description above.
This mod does work but not without modifying the mainspring. Parts schematic show #070020 as the mainspring. When it comes it is slightly longer at the tip and wider at the base than what was in the pistol. Looking close at the one in the pistol I could see where it also had been filed down at the tip and along the right side at the base. Without filing it is too long to go under the trigger and too wide to slide into the grip. Also, with two springs it takes a lot more force to cock and de-cock. It is now so strong it actually hurts your thumb after a few.

The extra spring that I received from Taylor's & Company was identical to the one that came with the revolver. It required no filing or modification to install. Older springs, or those from another source, might be different.

@@erasgonehistoricalmolds2400 I did receive mine from VTI Gun Parts as Taylor's & Company had no stock. Just curious if the one from Taylor's was correct size or they filed it down to match what came in the pistol from Uberti. As I said, I can see where the original one had been filed on. Also, is your pistol now significantly harder to cock and de-cock?

May sound like an odd question, but.... Has anyone looked into a self-destroying cap? If the whole thing just burns up, no cap - no jam. I don't know how this would work, I'm just a big picture guy.
Why does slixshot say their nipples won't fit on the 1849 pocket from Uberti I took the set of slix from my 1851 Navy London and put them on my 1849 pocket and they screwed In easy enough took no more effort than usual and the gun cycled
That range looks exactly like the Georgia DNR range near Fort Benning that I had gone to a couple of times, back in 2009.
Wt the revolver I use 10 caps I don't use 11 caps on rifle I use 11 caps although I do have one gun that requires 11 caps but it is a modern revolver
Does Uberti have you on their payroll? They should.

Probably because customers have requested lighter springs through the years because folk think that slicks up the trigger and action. True, but light springs also cause other trouble!
Get your A game together Uberti.
Why not just install a cap post
@erasgonehistoricalmolds2400

installing a cap post is much more involved for the average person than adding a second spring and changing nipples
