U.S. Soldier Tries a French Ration Pack

Ойын-сауық

Blown away by how this was. The French definitely know how to feed their soldiers. A lot of calories packed into a neat and orderly box.

Hello guys your tasting review was great. I'am a former french soldier and if I may give you some advice : Those RICR are suposed to be eaten in order Breakfeast : Muesli, coffe ,and some chocolate crackers with jam Lunch : Pork paté with salted crackers and one of the cans the pasta one would be great Dinner : the soup (please next time put more water please) Parmentier de canard after that chocolate cream and a cup of tea or two For all the small snacks like pâte de fruits and commando bar nougat and the rest of the biscuits (crackers) you are supossed to eat them all day long on the field every time you like or can. And for everyone : a lot of these items look "civillian" like comming from your supermarket and it's done on purpose to remind you of the coutry when you are a soldier in operation a thousand of kilometers away from your country. Some of the brands are quite famous in France like the mont blanc chocolate. That was just my two cents. Tous gaillards pas de trainards.

@@Odah_ Most Americans have no exposure to languages other than English outside of the two compulsory credits they take in high school, and probably 90% of them take Spanish as their language option. The majority of us will never leave our country. Hollywood, therefore, is the only resource most have for exposure to other cultures, and unfortunately, it's almost always wrong in it's representation. As a nation, we really suck at paying attention to cultures other than our own, even internally. I took French in high school and have been to France on a study abroad trip several years ago. I studied the dos and don'ts before going, but the rest of my group very clearly didn't. There's no real excuse for it except that our culture brainwashes everyone into thinking we're the best country in the world and discourages us from seeking out information that could discredit that. This ignorance and apathy is, in my opinion, one of the worst aspects of our culture.

Also i felt like there was somewhat of an hesitation on what they had to think on the food they were going to eat, like saying "huhh" or "ew" to just food, until they ate it and it was just good and couldn't stop eating it. There's such a huge gap in food culture between our 2 continents, i feel like Americans are disgusted for not a whole lot. I was watching a livestream and a girl said she forgot to eat some icecream that must've melted in her bag, and everybody in the chat started saying "EWWW DISGUSTING WTF" to just melted icecream??

What’s amazing is that the French MRE and its content seems to have not changed at all since I did my military service 30 years ago. The “crackers” are a very poor substitute for bread which is something really difficult to do without in a meal for a French person. If I remind correctly, those crackers are best if you dip them first in the potage. Chocolate in Europe is very different from the US in taste and texture, because of different regulations. In France, it’s more often dark chocolate with a stronger flavor and much lower fats and sugar. The chocolate drink is supposed to be mixed with milk, not bland water. If I remember correctly there should have been powdered milk along the coffee, tea and cocoa bags.

After that you can open it and enjoy it ! 👌🏼 For the soup, i was use to trade them with some of my mates so i could put 2 bags of the same soup for smthg like 50-75cl of water and a bit of salt 🤌🏼

When we holiday in France and stay in a rental cottage we nip to the nearest supermarché and buy a huge tin of ‘Confit de canard’ or duck confit which is a whole duck, separated into breasts and legs, and preserved in duck fat. We buy a bag of French waxy potatoes/pasta or rice and some frozen petite pois. You heat it up in a saucepan (with the fat) and the fat obviously melts, and then serve it without the fat and with peas, carrots and mashed potatoes/buttered pasta or plain rice. It’s absolutely delicious, it’s not cheap - about €25 for a large tin, enough to feed 4. My sons loved it when they were little as the meat falls off the bone and the seasoning is bang on ! It’s the perfect meal for when you’ve arrived late at night and don’t want to bother cooking anything in the oven from scratch. It’s all done on the hob in about 15-20 minutes, excellent for camping too !!

I`d probable be starving to death if this was all i had to eat for 24 hours. I need three solid meals a day. Not a couple of crackers and a bowl of thin soup. I`m sure the food was good, but there`s not enough food in this ration for me. I used to be starving when it was time for dinner when i served in the military.

French soldier here. Yeah the drink mix is bad. We try not to put it in our bottle because it will keep that taste forever after. For the biscuits. We usually have two different brands for them. There is the red box ones and the blue one ( the one you got). The salt biscuits in the blue box are known for being disgusting (at least for me and my pals). For the warm meal, we usually just poke holes in it instead of opening it. The soup you ate (potage) is supposed to be vegetables thick soup, and you add salt in it. I'm disappointed you disliked the chocolate for it is one of my favorites things in this MRE. Loved the reactions.

Former french NCO here, saw you pour the isotonic glasses portion, thought you'd have kidney failure before the end of the day !!! you're supposed to mix it in about a litter of water (1kg = 1L) Moreover, the salt biscuits are really disgusting, i felt you there, couldn't hold a laugh, give me some "hazing" ideas. About the heating dish, i'd suggest to wide open it, pour some water on it, just to avoid burning the bottom, and mix it around while it heats, you'll get the whole warm and mashed and eatable. For the rest, even you don't have "french soldiers" eating habits, i hope you liked it ! And yes, silverwear comes apart, a half saw bladed knife (named CAC), and a tool mixed fork/spoon ! Duck parmentier is part of the most MRE i hate the most, i prefer beef raviolis or lasagna or other sauce dishes. i'd trade the nougat for either pâte de fruit or chocalte bar, people don't like 75/83% black cacao, i alos used to buy half a pound of jam in a glass jar for mornings, some strawberry or raseberry Edit: i think this 24h hour MRE is about 3500 to 3800 kcal Par l'Empereur !

  • @meinnase

"This wont last someone a day" "Its 3600 calories" "yeah this is not enough". Bro, calories are calories, the french rations are incredibly dense, i mean the package is like less than half the size of the german ones, and yet it has more calories lol. 3600 is way too much food if youre not literally marching for 12 hours. An adult man needs 2000 if hes not doing much the whole day.

I’ve served in French army for 2 years. For ustensils as spoon, fork, knife and container it all come with the received package it’s not included inside the ration. Also the little thing you use to lift the main meals, you have to fold it so you don’t burn yourself when you pick it up. This is a 24h ration, you have the breakfast (muesli), noon and evening meals inside. And all the thing around (sweets/bars) to eat whenever you want. Also I don’t remember exactly what i’ve heard about the trade rate for 1 french MRE to americans but it’s likely 3-4 Americans for 1 french. Only did 2 years so I didn’t went on external operations. What I did was mostly « sentinel » (protection of sensitive sites such as train stations / airports)

Starters first, main dishes next, and sweets at the end. 2/ Among each category, eat flat dishes before spicy ones. Otherwise, flat dishes will be tasteless. 3/ If a dish seems too flat, try to add salt, pepper (and spices if you get) 4/ Drink a bit of water between dishes or insane mixes will happen. 5/ Do not drink sweet beverages with salty dishes. I know you get the habit of dinking soda with everything, but this is a gastronomic crime.

When a unit was leaving we had to confiscate all the MRE heaters since they couldn't go on the planes if the MRE was opened. When our unit finally got ready to demob we had hundreds of the heaters and so we decided to put them in .50 ammo cans and water them down 20 or 30 at a time. The water boiled. The ammo cans warped. The fire department showed up. Love what you guys do, keep up the good work!

Potage is the blended vegetable soup that was once the start to every supper in French households. It’s usually thick, but can be thinned out according to preference. The basic ingredients are onion or the white part of a leek, a garlic clove, dry white wine or vermouth, water/broth, vegetables including majority potatoes, some carrots and whatever else you like EXCEPT cabbage, because cabbage gives it a funky taste and texture so it’s better left out !! Add fresh thyme and a bay leaf, salt and pepper to taste and that’s it…

Muesli is eaten cold with milk, the pork would have been rillettes like pulled pork pâté, there wouldn't be creamer as its all drunk black, nougat is very popular in France, the duck is like a shepherds pie but with duck. The sweet drink would probably have been for a large amount of water as to not make a sweet drink. The 'crackers' would have had the salted ones for starter, cereal ones for jam, chocolate ones as snacks. Potage is like a 'thicker' soup that doesn't have large bits in it, I often have it in a mug to have it slightly thicker.

And for the cans yeah you are supposed to open them fully put them on the fire (no need to rush for a rock little tip you can just bend two of the four corners the other way so it makes a little stand and dont burn your table) and enjoy the sound of good food being cooked again and the smell !

The hot meal is for dinner when the weather is colder, I always kept the soup for duty watch during the night with my friends for having something warm. We never mix chocolate with coffee. So we have many tablets to warm coffee tea soup and the hot meal. We didn’t have chocolate biscuits. Only the salted for paté and cereals for jam. In the 90’s we didn’t have so many snacks.

Dear tyler, a tip for any future MRE reviews. those canned main courses that you made (often found in european MRE's) have a bad habit to not get cooked through well and even get burnt on the bottom sometimes. To avoid this you should open them first and mix them around a bit before putting them on the esbit stove. It makes the experience of eating it much nicer. I spent 3 years in the austrian army and I learnt this the hard way where on my first 2 exercises I ate nothing but badly prepped MRE's due to my own ignorance and I would like you to be spared from this displeasure. As a fellow banana-hater, I feel your pain! The white coating on the chocolate appears because it got warm and then re-solidified. The white coating is cocoa butter. Do Korea next.

I love the way you're looking for the duck in the "foie gras" :), this is the liver ! Personnaly I don't put water into a bircher, milk or nothing with. The "pâte de fruit" is more like a candy than a branch of cereals...very sweet is normal. Thank you for testing the France ration i appreciated! Friendships from Switzerland!

Haha, the fish smell yeah. Most european armies use esbit stoves like that one. Esbit is a german brand build on the discovery of that dry fuel chemical. Turns out its either very close or literally the same chemical that we smell on fish/gives fish the "fishy smell". Think similar to how sulfur is the poop smell, sulfur doesnt smell like poop, the sulfur in poop is what we smell (the most). Flameless ration heaters arent "a chemical" btw, its literally iron filings with an accelerator that makes the iron rust really quick when you add water, which, like any oxidation, releases heat.

In my opinion, the French RCIR is the best MRE out there. The components are very well thought out and the chocolate musli is possibly the best ration component out there. Cheers!!!

Watching you put that stuff on the biscuits was....... Interesting 😂 If I'm not mistaken biscuit for most of Europe is a cookie.

I was in the legion back in the 80's, we had the same type of rations but at that time we actually got a 20 cl bottle of red wine and also a package of Gauloises cigarettes in our MRE. Another fun fact was that in the chow/ dining hall we also got red wine served. I've been in the military since 1981 ( different armies ) and served all over the world, I tried several different MRE's but in the end I will say that I prefer the French MRE's they are high quality. Note, I'm not French. Ps. Put the jam in the müsli, you can even crumble the Fruit nougat in it and everything in Europe is way less sweet then in America.

Duck parmentier is actually really easy to make if you can get your hands on "confit de canard" which is pretty much preheated duck legs in can. You just have to scrape the meat sloppy joe style and do a homemade mashed potatoes, put them in a container to heat it in the oven.
