I had a good SF friend who got me into USASOAC. He said his favorite thing about SF was the constant learning. You will never stop learning, he learned how to fix humvees, he learned about helicopters (I taught him), learned about everything you can think of. IF YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT SPECIAL FORCES READ THIS im active duty airborne infantry so my unit gets a lot of dudes that fail out of selection. if you really wanna do selection come in as an 11x with airborne in your contract instead of joining as 18x. if you join as a 18x you have to sign a minimum of 5-6 years and you will only get your bonus if you pass the Q course. so many guys come into my unit after failing selection with 5 years left on their contract and no bonus. if you join as 11x with airborne in your contract you can do only 3 years and you will get your bonus as long as you finish all your initial training; once you're done with airborne school and you get to your unit you can drop a packet for selection and go from there.

My overriding thought when I graduated from the Special Forces Training Group Aug 2, 1968 (now called the Q Course) after 11 months. This isn’t that hard if I could achieve and finish to be assigned to the 5th Group RVN. My only thought after the graduation was the 5th Group. During a formation held by MSG Howell he called out my name and said, “7th Group.” I lost my mind, at Bragg the sentiment was better dead then Red (7th Group Flash is RED). No, I don’t want to join the Red Empire. After the formation was dismissed I stayed in place. MSG Howell walked up to me and asked if I had a problem. Yes, I don’t want to be in the 7th Group. OK, why? “I don’ yet want to spend a year cutting grass, raking pine needles or painting rocks white. OK, what Group would you rather be assigned. “The 5th Group sergeant!” Son do you know where the 5th is located? ‘Yes, are they still in the Nam?” OK son pack your shit you are now on your way to the Nam assigned to the 5th Group, the Legion. I ran to the PX purchased a 5th Group Flash and a sewing kit. I sat on a bench just outside the door, removed the unit crest, sewed on the Flash, replaced the SF crest. I can’t remember walking back for the noon meal in the Mess Hall; I believe I simply floated there with unbridled joy. I got in line at the Mess Hall used by the Phase 1 trainees and the Phase 3 trainees. The man in front of me looked back at me and told me to go ahead, then in succession all of the new trainees parted allowing me to advanced to the front of the line. Such is the power of the 5th Group Flash. I called Mrs. A in the Pentagon to make sure there wasn’t a mistake in my orders for the 5th Group. Mrs Billie Alexander was an angel she handled all of the Special Forces assignments. She replied that yes that my orders went out the day before; she wished me luck and that she would add me to her prayers. My feelings about going to the Nam; after 11 months of training I didn’t just want to sit on the bench, no, I wanted in the game. After two months on the B-40 team I begged the CSM of B-40 to send me to an A Team and every time he’d say No. finally the 05B (now 18E Commo) was so badly wounded that he was being sent to Walter Reed Hospital and that he was the only commo guy on the team. He told me to pack my ruck that the next day a Huey would take me to A-401, IV Corps Mobile Strike Force at Don Phuc. As the Huey was doing a slow corkscrew decent it hit me; damn be careful of what you wish for because you might just have your wish come true. The camp looked so small. I was picked up by a stripped down Jeep and taken inside the camp. After I stowed my gear in a room where we all sleeper I went inside the Team House. No one even looked at me or cared anything about me. On the third day Captain Cananvan (ret. LTG-3 stars) told Lott to get his company with 112 Cambodians ready for a 30 day combat mission and to take the kid with him (oh WTF I’m the kid). I was told that Lott was in his 4th year without a break and to simply watch him. If he gets down you get down, if he shoots you shoot in the same direction but if he runs, but remember this Lott don’t run. Lott is a full blooded Indian from the Northwest Coast and wanted to die a warrior’s death. Oh great. The last bit of advice, gif he runs stay up with him because the shit just went South. The 30 days were mostly uneventful with only a few contacts, nothing to write home about. Once back at Camp everything had changed. I was handed a cold beer with a welcome to Don Phuc. In the Team House everyone came up to me to welcome me to the camp. It then dawned on me that as a new guy I didn’t have a reputation that without a reputation I wasn’t worth the trouble. In Special Forces rank only means how much you’ll be paid each month; your value to the team was your reputation. My last three months I was assigned to A-404 the Airboat Team. Fiberglass swamp boats with no armor and just an A-6 30 cal machine gun mounted on the front of the Aircat.. during a long mission the 12 boats were caught in an ambush. One USSF KIA and another WIA who was a friend of mine from the course. The ranking NCO blamed himself. He returned to the camp, packed his bags and left. Why, he knew his reputation was gone and he blamed himself. I learned that if you screw up during a combat mission and people get killed your creed is gone so you are gone. After I returned home I enrolled at the University of Texas, Austin. While I was in the Nam my mother sent in an application on my behalf and then she mailed me the acceptance letter in February 1970. I started over again with three semesters already completed at Texas A&M. I started the Spring semester Jan 1971 with 26 hours transferred from A&M. I graduated with honors May 5, 1974. So “HOOK’EM” I bleed burnt orange.

  • @solidsnake2021

a few things about this video. First, keep in mind that this an army recruitment video and that this may look hardcore and is being marketed as a " anyone can do this" program, is extremely misleading. If you don't make it past selection or fail somewhere along the way to selection then you will go to the needs of the army. If you get selected and enter the qualification course keep in mind that if you fail anywhere along the two year pipeline of courses and gates to get your long tab then you will go to the needs of the big army. A 100 on the asvab, 49 push ups and 49 sit ups IS NOT going to cut it in this side of the army. In JFKSWCS the maximum is the minimum and you shouldn't even begin to think about going to this route if you can't score at least a 300 overall on the pt test at all times on any given day cause you will find yourself walking out the door and into the 82nd down the street. If you show up weak and stupid with a 100 asvab score then the cadre will give you all the fuck fuck games and figure out really quick which one your the worst and then apply more pressure so you DOR. The girl in this video talking to what appears to be a SORB recruiter or big army recruiter is as far from what tries out for this program as possible. As a matter of fact , she is probably the fayetteville street meat that you end up marrying in the 82nd who goes out with the other 82nd wives on the weekend to macs speed shop and ends up getting breeded by some bearded wonder off post while you are pulling 50% security somewhere on mac ridge rode freezing your nuts off meanwhile that longtabber is warming up his next to your wifes split tail. You also have to take a TABE test which is a college placement exam and you will probably fail that long before you even get on that bus to camp mackall.

We need people who are absolutely committed to excellence in all areas. I’m a marine and most marines would not make it through army SOF selection. This isn’t some cute challenge, this is a profession that can literally build up or tear down entire countries from the inside through so many ways. This is no joke.

But not just any Marine can just waltz into Ranger school or become a Green Beret and pass without tribulations. Hell, as impossible as it seems, some will even fail. There's quite a few things the Marines don't teach you that the special forces will. Respect to all the Marines out there.

If i were wanting to enlist (which i don't for several reasons) Being an Infantry Ranger in Ranger Regiment seems more appealing tbh. If all you want to do is direct action and do special reconnaissance at times. SF is more about training foreign indigenous groups of people overseas and yes they also at times do direct action themselves.

SFAS stands for "Special Forces Selection and Assessment". Raider candidates go to "A&S", "Assessment and Selection", genius. The ARMY is the ONLY ONE that refers to themselves as "Special FORCES". EVERYONE ELSE refers to themselves as Special OPERATIONS or as we were, "Special Operations - Capable".
