Tyre Nichols: Advocates Say Police Abolition Is Only Way Forward After Fatal Memphis Police Beating

Mourners gathered in Memphis, Tennessee, Wednesday for the funeral of Tyre Nichols, who died on January 10, three days after being severely beaten by five police officers following a traffic stop near his home. Expected attendees include Vice President Kamala Harris and relatives of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, two other Black Americans who were killed by police violence. We discuss national responses to police violence and calls to abolish the police with two guests. Justin Hansford is a professor at Howard University School of Law and the founder and executive director of the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center. Hansford is also the first American nominated and elected to the United Nations Permanent Forum for People of African Descent. Andrea Ritchie is a lawyer and organizer who has worked on policing and criminalization issues for over 30 years. Ritchie is the author of several books, including, most recently, "No More Police: A Case for Abolition," co-authored with Mariame Kaba.

    The media has sung the praises of police chief Cerelyn Davis but nobody is reporting on how many complaints have been lodged against the Scorpion task force. Given the video showing the brutality of the murder of this young man, Davis had no choice but to act as she did. The true question is how many times prior to this murder did she ignore? Acting after the fact did nothing to save this man. If Davis had ignored Scorpion police brutality complaints, is she not equally as guilty as the officers who stood by and did nothing?

    Of course the media will do that lol. But trust that black content creators and even others have covered her history as well as the Scorpion units history. We know how the media operates so people need to move differently. Do your own research and if you like videos, find creators and bloggers who posts the facts and history and keep biases to a minimum or at least acknowledge their position prior to or during their piece so people can think freely on their own. But trust and believe, the videos I seen on her, they are on her ass too. And apparently there was a superior officer on the scene that night so they’re working on finding out at what time he/she arrived so we know their role as well. Everyone is getting the smoke.

    The only time that should happen is if you can articulate that he is an immediate danger to the public and must be detained due to the safety of the public. Reckless driving is not reckless driving anymore once the vehicle stops. Now if the officer watched him drive over 7 or 8 people in the middle of the road I could understand getting him out of the car and getting him subdued quickly because the drivers' mindset would be somewhere else. However, there are no reports or indications that anybody was in danger or ran over. As a former police officer if I called out a minor traffic stop I would just call it out, call my location, and the tag number. If it was reckless driving I would call out my location, the tag number, and what the reckless actions were.

    I watched the video and witnessed five black men that were police officers brutally assault and beat a man to death. The beating was vicious, and it seemed like it was in a synchronized fashion the police officers assisted one another, in beating him mercilessly. after they had expended their energy, and we’re exhausted, there seem to be a congratulatory mood among them. This cold and Soulless behavior was shocking.

    It looked as if it were planned. Even in the George Floyd case, on the video we can clearly hear former officer Thomas Lane, asking, "Shouldn't we turn him onto his side?" However, Chauvin said "No, Leave him where he is." Chauvin had a personal grudge against Floyd because they had both worked security at the El Nuevo Rodeo nightclub and according to another worker, David Pinney, Floyd and Chauvin did not get along, but "bumped heads." This video shows that at least one of the Memphis excuses for an officer had a personal grudge against Tyre Nichols also.

    This was worse than the George Floyd video. At least in that video, former officer Thomas Lane, spoke up and said to Chauvin, "Shouldn't we turn him (Floyd) on his side now?" More to the notion that when you or others say they aren't human it plants things in the mind like they are "not us" (and I mean this regardless of any hue of skin). They ARE us as in they are human beings and therefore are subject to what that means. In this case, certainly there needs to be strict legal accountability.

The irony is that he did stop when he was asked to pull over. He complied. But instead of asking for his license and registration snd proceeding according to protocol, they yanked him out of the car and started thrashing him at which point he ran in sheer terror. Then they pursued him like a pack of blood thirsty hyenas. He did not resist them. He complied. Would he have been alive now if he hadn’t? If he had just sped off to his mom’s apartment where there would have been lots of people, those cowards would not have dared to do this. They pulled him over in a lonely place five of them against one. What are we to learn from this? If the police pull us over in a lonely place, are our lives in danger if we comply? It is truly terrifying. I know there are a lot of good officers out there but how are we to know?

It's safe to say these officers involved were literally picked off the street to work for the Scorpion Force. A few of them even went to college funny enough...definitely more to the story with these rumors about him & having an alleged affair…. I agree with the guest who mentioned how this is reported. The way this is reported needs to change from Tyre Nichols died after he was beaten by 5 law enforcement officers. To: Tyre Nichols died after he was "tased" and beaten by 6 maybe 7 law enforcement officers and neglected. by 3 emt/firefighters.

    100% agree! If this is seriously considered publicly we will lose ALL power too. We have to live in the numerical realities. Even calling it "defund the police" lost too many of our leaders. We need to learn from the tactics of the right. When they want to listen in our phone calls they name it "The Patriot Act!" When they want to seriously cut education funding they call it, "No Child Left Behind!" Whatever we want to do, we need to name it right! "Re-establish the Police" or "Reform the police" or "Support the Police" or "Reinforce the Force!" Then we pull funding from these areas and create emotional support task forces. Domestic difficulty task forces. De-escalation teams. Oversight. You name it! Please think about what can actually pass and not cause us to lose leaders with our interests at heart!

    Police reform has nothing to do with training. How do you retrain cops who gleefully beat someone to death while wearing body cams? Choke holds on NUC were banned when that killer choked Eric Garner in broad daylight, and he waved at the camera afterwards. American cops are sociopaths who know they are the only protected class in this country and they are seldom held accountable. That’s what needs to change.

    You're wrong. We dont need police. We need social services that actually address the root cause of crimes. Not state-sanctioned thugs who use violence to subdue and intimidate. That doesn't help the issue at time.

  • @stevenr7813

    @stevenr7813

    Жыл бұрын

    @@miasparks167 That argument only holds water if you honestly believe that no one would ever commit crimes if their basic needs (both physical and mental) were met. There certainly seems to be increased crime with less social and mental health services, but there is no indication that crime would disappear if those things were handled appropriately. If that were the case then you'd never see middle class to wealthy people without mental health issues commit crimes. But they do sometimes. If laws are going to mean anything then they must be enforced. If a person blatantly refuses to follow the laws that we agree are necessary for a functional society then that person must either be removed from society (by force if necessary) or punished by society (again by force if necessary) to get the behavior that the rest of us have deemed necessary for a functional society. It would be nice to believe that all people will behave appropriately if we ask nicely and explain how it's in everyone's best interest, but that's just not how life really works. Pretending otherwise takes you into the realm of utopian pipe dreams with no basis in reality or history. None of that excuses the behavior of law enforcement officers who engage in unjustified violence or those who stand by and let it happen. Those people do need to be held accountable, or preferably removed from police forces before they cause harm, but studies have shown over and over again that active policing in communities does indeed decrease the number of intentional homicides and violent crimes. Decreasing police presence is reliably linked to higher crime rates. It is possible to both increase social services and improve policing at the same time.

    People think abolishing the Police somehow means that all of the things Police do will go undone. The majority of those things are actually self-solving issues. Police themselves have known how little of an impact they have on behavior for decades. They barely even have basic intimidation or trepidation anymore. Most people don't respect them, and blatantly break the laws they're supposed to be upholding directly in view of the multiple versions of them that now exist. City, county, and state Police departments rarely cooperate with one another unless directly instructed to, and constantly find themselves at odd's with one another in the most crucial moments, i.e. Uvalde, Texas and the dozens of angles, of hours-upon-hours of Police ineptitude so dominant, that individual parents were able to circumvent their entire ethos to save their own children IN FRONT OF THEM. AT GRAVE RISK. We no long need the Police. They have been a fun, but massively failed experiment in which we gave authority to those who seek it, rather than those who deserve it. Sorry Karen's and Andy's... we're coming for their badges this time. They don't get to keep AUTHORITY status after events like this.

    What you have here is cause and effect from the defund police movement. Police officers are retiring and departments are having problems recruiting good officers. They’re also lowering the standards whereas you get A lower quality of candidate. Also, it didn’t help in Memphis that they hired a woman as chief. That came from Atlanta with a nefarious background. If you abolish the police, you’re gonna have anarchy and rampant crime. Actually, I think that’s what these people want with their sophomoric attitudes. And there’s an interesting statistic that Young, unarmed, white men are a lot more likely to be killed in this country than unarmed Young black men. But of course, we hear more about the blacks being killed, because that’s the media’s agenda, and he gives the race baiter something to talk about.
