They look great, gotta say they are by far the best looking Nids I've seen. Makes em look more natural and by that effect more sinister, as they become more relatable visually to something we recognise... Almost makes me wish I collect em instead of my Blood Angels... Amazing work 👍🏻

i think it would be really cool to try this on a dragon for d&d just need to find one with big plates instead of scales.

If you watch his video on genestealers you’ll see it works just as well even without large plates.

I’ve seen so many people attempt this scheme (and no wonder, it’s excellent!) that I wouldn’t be surprised if it makes into canon one day. Much prefer it to GW’s more cartoonish Tyranids, personally.

Very beautiful pattern I must say. It look “easy” to do and not loose your mind. As oppose of the usual little lines on the carapace that if you apply just too much pressure you end up with huge line which you can’t say with a straight face I meant to do that. I will most likely use you technique with my own color pattern. Thank you very much

Thank you for your tutorials! I did my own variation on it using Citadel colours and contrast paints (as basis). Personally, I was very happy with the Skeleton Horde - but I only put it on the Carapace, so maybe that makes the difference. It's stronger darkening in the recesses even makes the recess shading on the carapace superfluous. One advantage I found the Contrast paints to have, when properly handled (not too much, not too little) is that you can actually go *around* the little vents and claws, with the paint not flowing onto them like a wash would. That opens up doing the vents first, but still placing more varied colours around them, because I no longer have to take care it won't drown out whatever I used there (nor the even more tedious doing the vents afterwards). I did use Contrast paints on the skin, just a different one. A compromise between the Crab scheme and more classic colour distribution. And put a highlight on afterwards, because even with gaunts, I just can't help myself...

I really like your videos. And the colour scheme, so much so that I am hoping to try and replicate it, to an extent on my "army". Thanks for the inspiration :)

Tyranids are this big canvass of potential waiting to be harnessed, and you've harnessed it extremely well. It pains me whenever I see someone slopping the tired old Hive Fleet Kraken/Leviathan colors onto their 'nids when so much interesting stuff can be done on that space.

First I've seen of the scheme. (I don't paint/play often anymore) Just wanted to say that is actually beautiful. I know nature takes the credit, but the work you've done is great. That is potentially the first 'nid army I've seen and *really* liked, they're often a technicoloured nightmare. Nice in it's own way, but never one to really grab attention.

I'm not personally doing the coconut crab scheme, but this answered so many questions I had for my own NPS scheme. Thanks so much for answering all these questions for us! You're a legend, man! I would like to ask: can you provide a link to the airbrush? My scheme also relies on a good white base coat, and spray can primer isn't doing a good job.

See, I did this with a Contrast paint, mixed with a little Contrast Medium. Not only was the effect completely under my control, but it dries absolutely matte. GW marketed the Contrast paints poorly by making them seem like a quick-and-sloppy solution to painting armies quickly. But, as you can see from world-class painters like KAHA, Trovarion, and Ben Komets, they are an artist's secret weapon.

If you want to experiment with ways to stop pooling of the wash, try adding some drops of 50% isopropyl alcohol to your wash. It should break the surface tension and allow more even coverage of the wash, and it won't impact the final paint color.

Low surface tension is actually why it pools- the lack of surface tension allows the wash to run across the model, leading to it pooling at the lowest point of the model rather than staying where it's applied. I try to avoid isopropyl in acrylic washes as its mild solvent properties on acrylics can have some unintended effects, but the Pledge I use as a varnish is also an excellent surfactant, so I've used that in the past with washes to help them flow. In this case, the Army Painter washes don't need the extra help.

if you want to try another varnish i use jo sonja satin varnish, and the gloss for some wash jobs. bottle is 9$ canadian for 250 ml. i dilute it with a bit of airbrush fluidiser and shoot in my airbrush, got good result for an all in one product so far

i really want to see Tyranids pained like cockroaches, especially if the wings are changed to gossamer wings (instead of bat wings) :)

Really great scheme that looks like even beginners can get decent results! I was just wondering how you would paint wings. Just wash them with Dark Tone as well? Even bigger one's like a Hive Tyrant's? Thanks for the great tutorial!

I paint wings like the fleshy areas, but drawing in thin veins with VMC Brown Rose before any of the washes. You can find some pictures of my flying Hive Tyrant on my Instagram (@catgutpainting).

I would think a "primer texture" before washes would simply make it look like the carapace isn't 100% smooth. More organic. Smoothness is super-important for an army like Tau with all their flat surfaces, but less so for Nids. Or so it would seem.

@CatgutPainting EXCELLENT videos and idea! A ny recommendations on how to mix this up for a more green appearance? Loving the theme so much have picked up a few 'nids myself but would like to try a "greener" version but cant get my head around how i should adjust. Swapping out the Orange Brown maybe and adding green tone into the wash? Thoughts?

Yeah, that wouldn't take much change at all- replace Orange Brown with your choice of green, and then either leave the all-over wash as-is or sub in Green Tone instead of either Light Tone or Soft Tone. If you change the all-over wash, you might also consider swapping out the Red Tone for something else, since red + green will give you a muddy brown (better to just use a brown wash for the details in that case).

Would you happen to have suggestions on army painter equivalents to the vallejo colors? None if the shops in my area carry vallejo

It's the same recipe as the normal pink fleshy color, just with veins drawn in VMC Brown Rose before the washes start.

Have you tried using oil paint for your washes? You can make them as thin or thick as you want and clean it with running alchohol if it's on too heavy. Also price per how much you use is really good.

Yep, I've used oil washes a fair bit, mostly for vehicles though. I find that the low surface tension of mineral spirits makes oil washes great for pin washes and recess shading, but they have a hard time consistently coloring raised surfaces, which is necessary for a wash-only scheme. That said, when combined with a drybrushed or airbrushed highlight, it's a great method for easily shading models without staining.

I've been really into the grimdark look, when I am able to get home (stuck overseas foreseeable future), I am planning on painting up some squig squads in a dark and gritty realistic style. I've been getting inspired by guys painting using oil washes, AK interactive effects, and pigments. I've also been inspired by your patterns and I could see it on a squig. :) I did a search and found someone who did it in a similar style to what I want to do. But their version was more of a yellow/green tint and very unsaturated colors. They were really well painted.

These are great tutorials! I have a question for you. I’ve been having some trouble with losing detail with the krylon spray so I was thinking about switching to the citadel spray. However it sounds like corax white is hit or miss. Would this pattern and wash look just as good over a wraithbone base? Also haven’t been able to find any Dullcote for the finish, and it sounds like maybe it was discontinued. Do you have a recommendation on an alternative?

I've seen others use Wraithbone and it came out fine. It'll be a little darker and a little yellower in the end result, but not a massive difference. As for the Dullcote, I have no specific alternative recommendations, but you can always try out whatever matte varnish is readily available to you.

Hey, I really love this color scheme and want to use it for my tyranid army. Problem is, said army doesn't exactly exist yet. That being so, do you have a unit that you recommend to practice with? I don't want to go straight for a Hive Tyrant or something and mess it up badly.

I tested my schemes on a pack of five easy-to-build Termagants, treating them basically as sacrificial for the purpose of color scheme testing, and continuously stripping their paint and redoing as I iterated. If you like this color scheme then you shouldn't need to strip the paint at all; by the end of the five you should have it down. All that said, the most complex part is by far the dot patterning, so if you want to practice that just get some spare plastic card or sprue (or the sprues that said Termagants come on) and practice on there. Once you've got the patterning down, the rest is a piece of cake.
