Patterned Tyranid Schemes Made Easy- NPS Method

Ойындар

Here's the video you've been asking for, and which all my previous ones have been building up to: the logical process by which I devise patterned Tyranid schemes, using washes to drastically reduce the time requirements.
I've had a number of questions about whether Contrast will work in lieu of the two-layers-of-diluted-wash technique I discuss here. The short answer is yes, you can use a single layer of Contrast, but I've found it doesn't work /quite/ as well at getting the faux-highlighted effect. It's up to you whether the time saved is worth it.
For US viewers, be aware that you can get Army Painter washes on eBay for reasonable prices, if you don't have a shop that sells them locally.
And lastly: If you're having trouble following along or just want to see an example of this technique put into practice from start to finish, I've already got a demonstration video in the works.
Previous demo videos:
Red Coconut Crab: • Tyranid 'Coconut Crab'...
Blue Coconut Crab: • Tyranid BLUE 'Coconut ...
Dune Devil Scorpion: • Tyranid 'Dune Devil Sc...
Peacock Mantis Shrimp: • Tyranid 'Peacock Manti...
Hermit Crab: • Tyranid 'Hermit Crab' ...

    I started 40k 25 years ago, and always wanted a Tyranid army. Last Christmas I got the Tyranid starter box and finally got round to building the models and started thinking about a scheme, and I'm so glad I found your video. Now I'm off to look through the interwebs for some inspiration, thanks for a great video, and you have painted some fine Tyranid schemes there.

    Thank you so much for this video. Although you are covering tyranids I would go so far as to say that the concepts apply to all miniatures. My favorite thing is that you are basing it on real world examples for inspiration. Marco Frisoni says (paraphrased) If you base your paining style on a miniature it can never be more than a less than copy of a miniature where as when you base it off of a picture or artwork it will stand on its own as a miniature. Your work exemplifies this well.

    Ugh...I don't care if the studio used "interesting patterns" to break up the monotony of the schemes in the 3rd edition codex. The models from that era - e.g. the wannabe Alien look - were HORRIBLE. Teeny tiny legs, goofy smiles, and big giant heads that tipped over constantly. Forgeworld hasn't even had the decency to pay the Tyranids a visit in 10 years as they still use that awful aesthetic. One of the reasons why Tyranid schemes are often boring is because a lot of the models are boring (and old - Termagants and Hormagaunts are from 3rd edition), and there are no mechanical parts to breakup the organic parts. I'm not saying they should suddenly become part bionic, but they could definitely use some new troops models. To top it all off, they are all on bases far too small for their footprint. Genestealers on a 25mm?? They take up twice the space of a Space Marine!!! Every other faction has at least been updated to the correct bases. Back on topic... Exoskeleton on chitin is always going to present limited options compared to armor with dynamic edges and curves, connective hydraulics, sharp angles and contrasting textures between gloves and guns and swords, squad/company/faction markings, etc. The new Primaris Marines are a painter's dream, for example, whereas Tyranids are not. It takes an extraordinary effort to make them look good.

  • @TheWonkster

    @TheWonkster

    7 ай бұрын

    Tyranids largely look great and are one of the most visually interesting armies in the game. The variety of monsters and unique designs while still maintaining design cohesion is far beyond most other armies, especially any marine faction where you're lucky to have anything that isn't just an astarties with some shit glued onto him and no/a barely modified helmet. A nid army will feature a scattering of gaunts, of course, but I honestly fear for your mental health if you can look at an average nid table and say they all look the same unless your opponent just speedpainted them an hour before you played.
