Tyco DRG&W 1880's "12 Wheeler". How to Disassemble, Clean & Re-lube

Purchased this Tyco #253-24. Denver & Rio Grande 248. She's a 1880, 12 Wheeler 4-8-0 from 1977, brand new still in the wrapper. Opened the Ol' Steamer up, cleaned & re-lubed and sent it on it's maiden voyage......45 years late.

Glad you busted open the box to me getting these old locos running is priceless. I love picking up old Tyco engines and getting them running again. My son in law was at an estate sale and brought back a whole box of old Tyco stuff with the 0 4 0 switcher and a crane and tender car all in mint condition. With a little cleaning and lubing I got the engine running like new. I was in heaven. Love your channel and don't listen to all the rivet counters and purists on the blogs buy what you want and have a ball that's what I do.

Super. My railroad still operates a Mantua/Tyco 4-8-0 that I bought when I was quite young. It set me back the princely sum of $19.97 plus Uncle Sam's share. After almost 50 years of use, not only did I get my moneys worth, but the years of handling and operating the locomotive, both inside and outside, have given it a very nice patina, and it looks very realistic. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

Still catching up on all your videos. I will say they are some of the for me some of the most entertaining and informative videos to view. As for old vs new trains, I much prefer the older ones. I like the retro non-DCC types. I collect all kinds with 1940s to 1960s in diesel as my focus. As for steam, I have a small collection of these as well. Currently assembling a Mantua Mikado Steam loco and tender 2-8-2 kit 208. Best wishes and please keep making your excellent videos!

You asked an interesting question about old trains, old cars, old dogs and watermelon wine. oh, maybe not that last part.😊 I’ll try not to bore you with this but, I have been watching and listening to you for awhile now. So, some facts about me. I’m 85 years old so we’re not in the same league age wise, but it is interesting about our similar interests. My first three cars in a row were Model A’s. Two coups and 2 door sedan. Then it was a 1931 Buick 4 door, fold out 3rd row, 2 bucket seat, long sedan. I do miss that one. My first train ride was in 1942 from Auburn California to Boise Idaho in a noisy wooden seated coach. I have no idea what type of Locomotive pulled it but, it was very very loud. When it pulled into the little Auburn station where we were waiting belching steam, smoke and screaming. So was I!😅 I’ve loved trains ever since. My Grandfather, Pop Massey, was a section Forman just outside Tonapah Nevada and was know as the absolute best track layer on the west coast. They say he laid track by eye and you could always tell when you hit a Massey section because the ride smoothed out like butter. He also was selected by a movie studio and with permission from the railroad, to lay a section of track off the mainline running from Sacramento California to Lake Tahoe Nevada in the mountain range in around 1935 to 1940 to facilitate the filming of a scene of a train derailment from the main line into Lake Tahoe itself. I’m not really sure of the date and sure do wish I knew what movie it was. I’ve heard the train was left in the lake after the rails were removed. What a story! This getting long. i Noticed you were holding a guitar in one of your videos. You were holding it like you what it was all about. I’ve played guitar since I was about 14 years old. I h ad my own band for about 25 years playing country music in local clubs and communities playing lead guitar and singing. Also, you mentioned Recreational Vehicles. I taught RV Repair Adult Education School, 6 month classes, five days a week in Sacramento California for one and a half years graduating three classes. The school was backed by the California Education System. I then went on to write a column about RV Repair for the Sacramento Bee for about a year and 1/2. I was in the Navy for 11 years through Vietnam and was discharged in 1975 on 100% disability. I then spent a lot of years building mountain man knives and restoring old guns. I also worked for the State of California as a Computer Consultant for 12 years before retiring from there. I now work mostly on my new hobby of restoring HO locomotives and tinkering on other scales as well. That is why I enjoy your videos so much. I’m still a novice. There is SO much to learn. I just thought it was interesting that you seem to be someone I know. I know that’s not true but, I always feel like I’m listening to a friend. It’s just me and my wife now. All the kids are grown and for the most part are scattered all around the country. We have 12 great Durand kids and two great, great grand kids. So life is full. My wife recently underwent cancer surgery, but seems to be doing pretty well. If affected her heart though, so now we have that to deal with. As for myself, Cancer of my lung 5 years ago requiring the removal of one of them Two small heart attacks, three small strokes and four episodes of internal bleeding before they repaired my stomach. But, I’m still here. Just not ready to go yet.😊 well, I’ll shut up now. I guess I just wanted to talk. Take care.

Hello Steven, Thank you for sharing this great story. I wished we went to the same barber because I could sit there all day and listen to some of the amazing stories I'm sure you and other Fellers from your generation have. Especially Mechanic stories of how you did stuff "back in the day". So much knowledge each generation has but the fact that we dont really intermingle between the generations much makes all that great knowledge die out with the generations. I did a pull with Uncles outfit back in the early 90's. Army. Spent many years as a medium / heavy duty truck and equipment mechanic. 25 years or so doing sound and lighting for bands and corporate gigs. I'm better at the drums than the guitar. I possess a very well rounded Resume. Sounds like you were working on the RV's back when they were made with pride. Nowadays they are huge garbage piles that cannot last the length of their one year warranty. Thanks for your compliments and support of my channel. I'm glad you have this hobby to keep your hands busy and that this "young pup" of 56 can teach you a few tricks you dont already know. Good to hear your wife is doing well, and as for you....guess your not ready to throw in the towel. Your getting a lot of exercise running that Reaper off for sure!! Take care as well Sir.

That is one TYCO steam locomotive that I am looking for at a good price. Just love it for some reason ever since I saw it back in the 1970s. The budget is tight, but I am sure one will come along. I have TYCOs 4-6-0 Petticoat Junction locomotive right now in front of me, cleaning and tuning it up. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice weather, so it should be nice in the unheated workshop/layout building for some running of the trains. Having a good time watching your videos. Just discovered your channel recently. And I have to say I don’t think there’s many channels out there that can make me binge watch your content. Your videos are great! They show stuff you don’t see to often. I love your passion for the hobby. Being a younger guy (in my 20’s) in the world of model trains is kind of a let down. I’m not so young as to not know what I’m doing but am also old enough to know we are few and far inbetween. And since being younger am looked at as a amateur. I paint model trains and do custom work on the side from my day job. As it’s a passion of mine and I have to admit haven’t been as good with the KZread thing as I’d have liked to. I plan to have a couple more things in the future just super hard to set aside that time to actually sit down and look at a fix on something. But keep it up! I am enjoying your channel, and as far as modern trains go, there’s a mix. I love me a old brass engine as I have a lot of them, but I also enjoy tinkering with the MDC roundhouse kits and engines as well as dressing up old blue box engines and kits and such.. Armchair modelers are everywhere. Your opinion and collection will vary from person to person. But know, as I am someone who doesn’t currently have a layout anymore, and has a small (once large) collection of Union Pacific steam era stuff that was sadly thinned out due to financial issues, your collection is amazing! Never feel like you have to modernize yourself to fit in. Collect what you love, and you’ll find others who are like-minded to yourself! Keep up the great work and I’ll continue to watch and support your channel!

Good evening Marc, Thank you for your kind words in your comment. They really made my day, and helps a lot with my (currently) unpaid internship with Y.T. that people out there are binge watching my content. Comments with such positive statements helps me to see the light at the end of the 1K sub tunnel. Lets me know I'm producing interesting and entertaining content. It's unfortunate your being "looked down upon" due to your age. The local modelers here in my home town are mostly rivet counters and they constantly snub me because I'm not running the latest in DCC and $600 loco's. Thats the only real downside to this hobby, the 'Ol Boy's that have been doing it forever seem to forget they started somewhere, when they were younger, and didnt have nice stuff like today. So I guess in my rambling's don't let other negative Nick's in the hobby get to ya :-). To bad some of your collection had to be turned into $$$. hopefully you will get the collection back up to the proper size. You sound like a very passionate modeler and have a lot of knowledge on the subject for being in your twenties. Must have been reading up on stuff at a young age. It's good to hear that some younger people are interested in model railroading. Take care!! :-)

@@classicmodeltrains thank you for your kind and supportive words. I do appreciate it and hope to get mmmm use my knowledge to help others out in the hobby. We are all one group of folks who want the same things, and that’s to enjoy it and run some trains. I think you are off to a great start. I have started with toys and when I got my first big engine, a UP Big Boy by Rivarossi, that was the start of my addiction and moving up into the big league of model railroading. And they only got better from there. You have nice vintage trains, from makers that don’t exist anymore. And I’ll have to say that’s something you don’t see taken so serious anymore. But like you mentioned, we all started somewhere. Humble beginnings as I say, and you definitely are on the “right track” to doing it (sorry for the bad pun, just had to…) Some of the most famous people on here started small. And sometimes it’s better to be a smaller channel. I wouldn’t see why KZread would want you as a creator. You have an excellent attitude, you have great content, and your examples are really well done and your videos are really inspirational to people that don’t know where to start. I have recommended a couple folks to your channel, and will continue to do so. I know a good person when I see one, and would definitely bet all my money you will get there one day. And don’t give up!

The reason it has No.3 on the smoke box front is that model is really a model of the 4-6-0 Sierra no.3 ten wheeler, the same loco that was featured in the 1960s TV show "Petticoat Junction" and a ton of other TV shows and movies. Mantua-Tyco just put in another pair of driving wheels to make it a 4-8-0 "Mastadon" almost without changing anything else-except for changing the stack from a wood burning ballon stack to a straight stove pipe stack that coal and oil burner uses; and the pilot from a fairly modern looking one to a classic triangle "cow catcher" type.

Not the 4449 I am wanting since I rode it back in 80 something from El Paso to Alpine. Both exciting and nostalgic. I will get on one of these days but am really avoiding the Bachmann/Lionel model due to numerous difficulties in manufacture as you commented on in one of your videos. For me, I love the durability and reliability of the old trains. Just got my second Varney F3 working today, pulling some metal passenger cars! I don't care too much for the modern plastic trains, they are too delicate and finicky, had nothing but problems with my two modern diesels, one of which died, for no apparent reason. Guess I'll have to rewire it.

The construction of that loco is virtually identical to the Tyco Crescent limited Pacific I have. The tyco pacifics are all metal. Very heavy. Good puller. They use the classic spring loaded brush sets of the MU-2 motor and just like the MU-2, they are five pole. Not bad. The bottom plate, steam chest, front wheels, spacer, spring...all of it is the same on the pacific. Same construction. The binding is caused by two things. 1. One of these is that all the drive wheels on your model have flanges. The wheel base is too long for tight radius tracks. On the pacific loco they have the center pair of driving wheels with no flange. It helps. 2. The valve gear on tyco steam locos is notorious for binding. This is because of one point of mounting where the valve gear floats andcocks sideways and causes the drawbars to flex and misalign. I fixed it on my crescent by adding some glue at a specific point so the valve gear cannot misalign. Contact me if you want pictures.

The rear set of drivers have no flange. The Mikados, Pacifics, Decapods, are all very similar. These have similar drive traits, but use a open frame motor than does not resemble a MU-2. Cool idea on the valve gear issues!!

The locomotive is essentially a rework of the 10 wheeler “Dixie Belle”. The boiler casting wasn’t changed when Tyco created this locomotive. The actual prototype is on the Sumpter Valley, and is quite a movie star, it has appeared in several movies as well as several tv shows. Most notably “ Petty Coat Junction” and I believe this is the locomotive used at the beginning of “Tales of Wells Fargo”. In “Petty Coat Junction” she appears with her combine and coach, which MDC Round House used as inspiration for series of 34’ “Overton” coaches. The locomotive (the 4-6-0) actually originally was owned by the ATSF, but had, I believe, binding issues on their rails. I couldn’t see, but if your locomotive has flanges on all axles, this could be causing the binding. If the two center axles had blind ( no flanges) this would reduce the binding. Real railroads did this for the same reason. I still love the old Tyco steam, wish they were still on the market. The actual D&RG locomotive was originally a class 60 consolation then reclassified as a C-16. This is a narrow gauge locomotive, not standard gauge. The “ bumblebee” paint scheme, featured here, was only used in the movie “Rio Grande” (This was a Hollywoodised version of the Royal Gorge War) on several locomotives, the only one to retain the colors was locomotive 278. It is still nice to see these old Tyco locomotives on the rails, it does a heart good, even though they aren’t exactly “ prototype”. If it weren’t for “modeler’s’ license” this hobby could be very boring. Keep up the good work.

@@classicmodeltrains I looked at some photos of the 4-8-0 after receiving your reply, I don’t understand why Tyco put the blind drivers the last axil. If they would have put these at the no.3 position and put blind drivers on no.2, like the Round House “ Old Timer” consolidation, I think this would relieve the binding. I think your only choice, now, is to turn down the flanges on the wheels. If you could find an another blind axil, rep lace the flanged wheels with the blind ones. NWSL produced a quartering device that would help with the reassembly. The present arrangement will definitely bind on the tight curves Tharp we customarily use.

Ah....Somehow missed the last wheel being flange-less. The motor layout being angled vs horizontal is the main difference. The armature and brush assembly are virtually identical plus it's only using a worm on one end. Either way, when tuned up and if you swap the magnet for a neodymium they are very good pullers (not great crawlers). Crude but fun! Great channel!

Look around for a 24v can motor for the old girl, the torque will override any binding and give ya a nice low speed to boot.

Another comment, I was curious, so I went “parts shopping” and came up with a couple of options for the drivers on eBay 1) there was an 0-8-0 frame that had the center drivers were blind. 2) there was also a 4-8-0 frame with all the drivers, # 4 axil is blind. I hope this will help with the binding and get your “ Mastodon” back on the rails with no binding. FYI the locomotive did exist, it was built by the Central Pacific.

The correct way to do it is to keep one sealed and then buy a second one to rebuild and run :) I also collect postwar Lionel so I have a soft spot for originality.

You’re a lucky man to have found that 12-wheeler new in the box. I’d have taken it out of the box even if the box was pristine. Collecting models without ever removing them from packaging just doesn’t make sense to me. I’ve vacillated about buying a Tyco 12-wheeler for some time now, but seeing your video today made up my mind- I’m looking for a 12-wheeler starting tomorrow! Now, the question about age of models. I like models made in the period 70’s thru 80’s. I prefer strictly dc because I have only a small space for my layout and don’t have any use for noisy dcc sound systems. I like quiet! The majority of my equipment is Athearn and Mantua, with scattering of the other manufacturers. My models represent from Promitory Point to about 1965. This gives me a nice assortment of steam and diesels without having the monster steamers and diesels that won’t or can’t run on a smaller layout. I thank you for asking and thank you for you videos as I am learning more about servicing my Tyco locos and returning them to service.

It runs better as a 10 wheeler. It is the same model but with an extra driver axle. It was intended to replicate Sierra #3 Rogers 1890s which is the famous TV locomotive The Cannonball. 8 drivers tend to bind as all have flanges. The 4-6-0 arrangement just looks like a missing axle in the same frame. Great model along with the Tyco shorty combine coach to model Hooterville or Hill Valley 1885.

The prototype the the Sierra Railway number 3 (a 4-6-0 that is the most filmed in movies [High Noon, Unforgiven, and Back to the Future 3,...] and TV[Lone Ranger, Casey Jones, and Petticoat Junction...]). I believe This model is OO scale not HO. Since the motor used could not fit in a HO version. That is why it looks like a monster next to HO locomotives of the same era.

Hello Happy Valley, Did you buy the one you found at the hobby shop? Ive had a few people tell me this loco is modeled after that 4-6-0 use in films and TV. pretty cool story :-)

@@classicmodeltrains Yes I did. Plus two 4-4-0s and three old time passenger cars (they came with the one 4-4-0 which sadly is missing the drive shaft.) I cleaned out his 19th century equipment. The locomotives that I am buying now is for mostly spare parts for the working fleet.

My Tyco 10 wheelers going around 18 radius curves also bound up and sometimes we would ride over the rail it's a very long wheelbase. I miss my old ho days. Back when you couldn't go wait to go to the Hobby Shop to get the new issue of Model Railroader or trains or railroad model Craftsman they were all great magazines. At 60 cents a piece I could get three of them for an hour's work now they're $8.99 so they're $27 for three of them. Sucks growing up what can I say.

I understand about talking old trains at the hobby shop. When I was restoring a Tyco for my son I went in to find some replacement brushes and guy at the counter told me to pitch it and buy new. I don't go to that one anymore.

That is a great find! I get a great sense of satisfaction in getting an old Varney/Mantua/Tyco running again. The Mantua Shifter on my workbench right now still had the original paperwork in the box indicating that it was bought in kit form on March 22, 1960 when I was still in eighth grade. How neat is that?

Hello J H Bruce, That's a great story with that shifter. I love when I get an auction box of stuff in and find old literature about the stuff in with the stuff. Knowing some back stories about the loco or car, make that piece much more meaningful to your collection. Thanks for commenting :-)

One thing you can do to get it to perform better is to swap the magnet out for neodymium magnets from home depot. They greatly reduces amperage draw and increase torque substantially. I had to do it to my mom's ten wheeler just to make hers run again, the magnet was totally dead.

the question is, how will you find one that fits? there are re magnetizers that take the whole original motor intact and make it like new.

@@suppylarue220 The magnets I got are thin disk style. Standard tyco motors take four of them and Pittman DC71s take five. I've heard some say it's best to not have a gap and to make a shim for any gaps but I've had no difference between the performance with or without a shim.
