The word "legend" gets tossed around rather freely these days. Nothing wrong with that. After some fifty years of unmatched technical and cultural progression-skateboarding's cast of notables is chock full of legendary. Our cup runneth over. However, in the case of Ray Barbee, "LEGEND" should be with an uppercase "L," in flashing lights, and in all caps. Here's why!

One thing I love about Ray's skating besides all the obvious stuff, is how tech and how big he went with his tricks in the 90's. He evolved with the times but still maintained his style and vibe. LEGEND indeed.
There's so much in Ray to admire. All that talent and he's a genuine humble guy and really happy. Total inspiration.
Ray was a part of my inspiration in the late 80's in South Central LA dodging bullets...
so when did you start skating " 6 years ago " so how long you been skating? " Ummm, about 6 years? "
This made me so happy to watch. And Ray's definitely deserving of the "legend" status. I'd love to meet him one day and just tell him thank you for making a weird black kid feel normal for being into unconventional things.

Myke C-Town Crazy seeing you here! I love your reviews, been a fan of dead end hip hop for a long time, but I definitely agree, one of my first boards was a Ray Barbee pro model, he made me feel like I belonged as a black skateboarder.

I went to school with him. There were literally only two "black" (I'm biracial) skaters at our school. I know I got made fun of for skating and surfing, by both blacks and whites. I'm sure he did too. But, we did it anyway. Ray would kill it on the way to school, all casual style (just like in the vid). Cool that he inspired you guys and helped change the BS stereotype that black guys can't skate or surf.

I met him.. Super chill man. Legendary !! Well..to be honest. I only asked for his autograph. But he seemed more than happy to give it to me. So was Tony Hawk.
this is awesome....skating in the late 80's....thru the 90s.....you kindda feel old...now in our 40's.....but God gives grace....and I see Ray....has talent in lots of things....music,photograpy...and of course sk8..ing...👍🏼👏🏼🙏🏼
That smile is everything.
I met Ray at a skate comp in Orange, Tx. When I was 11 yrs old. Nicest soul you'll ever meet. Instantly became my favorite skater. Still is. His Powell Hydrant deck is my unicorn. Best board I had as a kid. Now I'm 41.. I will find it !
This guy is the reason I fell in love with skateboarding.
My Favorite Skateboarder Of All Time. Skating since 87'. #OldFolks
"Watch out for rocks and cracks." Words to live by.
One of my all time favorite skaters Ray Barbee a true legend 💯
I'm 43 years old and I still have my ray barbee deck some good memories

That’s cool man. I’m 45 and grew up skating in that era. I had the his pro model but have no idea what become of it. I used to always sell my old boards when I needed a new one. I wish I had some of those classics: lance mountain , tommy Guerro flame dagger, ray barbee, and several H street boards. I still skate but am pretty careful as the body seems a lot more fragile nowadays 🤙🏽
Ray Barber is a great skateboarder, smooth, multitalented and super nice guy... met him @ Scott Carpenter Skatepark Boulder Colorado 2001 w Jeff Grosso, Salman Agah and some guys from Black Label Team. Ray signed my friend’s board!
Awesome! I often fell like Ray gets overlooked, he was and always will be epic!
Ray was a big influence on this kid in Liverpool England. Not been skating too long when public domain came out. He stood out to me. Who didn't want to cruise down street like barbee could?
His skating flows just like his music. Both are very pleasing 👍🏽
Very cool. Want to see more of these.
so good and new order made it that much better
Love his Ban This part. The music, the slow mo, so good! Most definitely a Legend
Rubberboys. Inspired just to go skating when first starting. Great skater, musician. Legend ❤
Thank you Ray..for being such an inspiration!!
First deck I ever bought and still my fav skater of all time. Such style and natural flow, to me he was a street extension of the choreography of those old freestyle guys in comps.
one of my favorites! truly a talent and all around nice guy! haha positive vibes all the way
my friends dad is him!!! and he told me about this and I met his son by football
Street innovator, musical taste and effortless style, Ray is easily in my top three skaters I'd like to spend a day in their shoes. His lines are second to none.
love this dude
I remember mid 90s when Airwalk Shoes were expensive!

Already. Salute from the culture!!! Love and True Light from skåne Sweden 🍀
I rmbr back in the summer of 87’, I saw Ray skating at skate session in San Jose. He was skating with a dude named Rob Torres( if I’m not mistaken) Ray shredded! I’ll never forget how he skated with such finesse and flow. No doubt, Legend!
So good!
Absolutely loved how you ended this video with one of the coolest Sonic Youth riffs. Did you choose it Ray?
Legend for sure...much respect Ray - thanks
Thank you Ray...
Genuine nice guy and Legend.
mad props to Ray !
I must have watched his part a few hundred times!
I just wanted to emulate Ray so much when I was kid. Lines for days baby!
skate + music = forever
Yes! My friends and myself will ask the question, what skater would you like to spend the afternoon with , and I always had said Ray.. well Tony of course too but how cliche'. Ray seems like such a rad individual, and there too, I'm a white dude inspired by this guy and that's what's awesome about skateboarding.. We don't say shit like "first African American to do" anything in skateboarding. There is no color/nationality.. it's just who's rad and stands out and especially, positively :) Cheers, Ray!! You're the man!!
WAY AHEAD OF HIS TIME SKATING AND LIVING LIFE KEEP SKATING DUDE
you made it bro.
Ray is a beautiful dude. The absolute coolest.
Brilliant
awesome
Legend
Beautiful man Beautiful smile
His fluid style is the better, he skates effortless.
Make another one about the Gonz.
Were you in school on June 5 2019 Wednesday last week of school?
arrecho ray eres el mejor
Ray Barbee, Tony Hawk and New Order. Holy shit.
What’s the name of the song that ray played on the guitar? It was after they said he got sponsored by fender
🙏🏽
Ray barbee was the first black pro skater that got me into skating late 80s

There was Steve Steadham before him but other than seeing his graphics I dont know if I ever saw any of his footage. I was a huge fan of Natas and Gonz but when Ray Barbee and Matt Hensley's parts came out in 1988 my mind was blown.
true fucking legend
He looks like the guy from that video public domain
8:55: Cat Barbee.

This guy was my personal teacher for all the no complies i could make...
Do Frankie hill !!!!!
Gr8 soundtrack
Hell yeah new order 😎
what a great way to end my night. Goodnight....zzzzz
Is that outtro music Rays music? Sounded a lot like Sonic Youth.
I just want Spike and Ray to make more art together.
my rolemodel in skateboarding
#solid 👊👊👊
What song are played in this video?
The last song...who is it? My first thought is its Ray Barbees but then I thought maybe Mogwai. Anybody know?
so is it a step hop or a no comply???

beateater43 no comply
Totally gave me a new appreciation for the whole "no comply" craze. While most of the tricks are rather basic (very few people pull it off like RB or Janoski), it can be done in a progressive way, and can be a way of paying tribute to the man who solidified skateboarding as something for everyone. *slow claps*
When i first started skating in 98-99 i always thought Ray at that time had one of the best Heelflips.
What a fucking superstar.
Style for days.
yeh it's him himself
king barbee
name of the last song?

the king of the no comply he's the best
I he shaves his beard, he looks like a smiley 17 year old. Man doesn't age.
likeeeeeeeee
Ray Barbee= Legend
It really pisses me off the way the industry completely shuns Franky Hill. He was one of the first dudes to take on some big ass handrails and gaps that hardly anybody would step to. I always liked Ray Barbee no doubt he deserves legend status. But Cmon TRANSWORLD. FRANKY FUCKING HILL!

I had the 20th anniversary TWS and they did honored him with a page in the top 20 most influential skateboarders. You're right, they should dedicate him a video as well.
Step hop? Is that not a No Comply?
@fintanoclery2698
4 жыл бұрын
It used to go by both names. Some people said no comply was off say a parking block and no comply was just off the ground.
why did tony have to use cliché at the start
Yeah, copied his tricks mid-late 80's. LEGENDARY.
My hero! here's my new song (with a ray name drop) about not wanting to be an old man and just wanting to skateboard! kzread.info/dash/bejne/mn6Oza2pmqzZhLA.html
