Ray Barbee: A Common Thread - An ILFORD Inspires film
Фильм және анимация
Ray Barbee's film ‘A COMMON THREAD’ is about finding enjoyment in things that are challenging. This is a captivating insight into a humble yet remarkably talented skateboarder, musician and photographer who believes that all 3 passions are crafted by various factors outside of the artist's control. From making prints in a darkroom to making music in a studio, Ray embraces the imperfections of analogue formats.
Filmed and Edited by Exploredinary (Sarah Reyes and Daniel Driensky)
Original Music by Richard Carpenter with Outro/End Credits Remix by Ray Barbee

Rad to see ilford do a series on these three legends.
This series started on a high note! As a 32-yr old who grew up skating, playing guitar and taking photos this speaks to me on so many levels!

He is sin't he. Do you do much darkroom printing yourself?
I have a lot of memories growing up in San Jose I’m the same neighborhood as Ray, at Sierramont Middle and Independence high. Mike Griffin’s ramp! A guy that made everything look so effortless and so easy going. I was skating at the same time, but could only dream of the talent Ray had. An inspiring guy and happy to see he is still following his passions. Oh and I remember we both have the same birthday, Oct 5. Soon we’ll be 50! Funny the things we remember.😁✌️

Such a talent. Had no idea people still used dark rooms! Last time I was in one was in college back in the early 90's. Great shots! So true about the emotion of black and white. Very cool and inspiring. 😊

@@Ilfordphoto yes. About 5 months in so far. I started with a Nikon F3 and am now getting a Leica M3. Ilford Delta 100 and Tri X 400 are my go to film stock. I hope both of you keep making more films. This film was very inspirational and also respectful towards the subject and the story.

Grant Brittain thanks for watching, Grant! It means so much to us that you enjoyed the series ❤️
Grew up in the backyard ramp era and pushed hard into street right around when Ray was just coming up. Always had a love for photography which carries this day. Honestly, I hadn't heard his name in decades, and it's so great to see in this context. Looks and sounds like he did really good for himself. Elated. Nice shot of Lance, btw. Great job on the documentary too.
Thank you Ray for this inspirational peak into your life and art! 👏👏👏

Excellent video! Cool guy, full of inspiration.
glad ray is doing great. he was cutting edge back in the early days of street skating.
This really touches a part of me as I came up in the early 80's and 90's skateboarding era, and this time was also my early steps into photography beginning with shooting friends downtown in the Village (NYC) and also in BMX (Freestyle and Racing). Those were great days and I'm glad to see that there have been so many sk8rs who were bitten by the film bug. Also, Ray's film style reminds me very much of Gordon Parks and Roy DeCarava during the Harlem renaissance period, excellent imagery.

Thank you so much! Exploredinary is from Texas so for this series we wanted to incorporate music from Texas and we brought our friend Richard Carpenter on board for this film. Ray is also an extremely talented musician so we filmed him jamming in the studio and incorporated that in. The ending track is a Ray Barbee remix of Richard Carpenter's song which plays in the intro.
Balsam to my soul🎼🎼

Awesome :)
Funny thing is the closes skateboard shop near me when i was a kid was in Ilford where i bought my first pro-skateboard(Natas mini) :)
Shout out to the PT01 and Ray... if you get a real turntable, amp, and speakers and play a cleaned record there is no pop and sizzle. Those sounds are not supposed to be part of the vinyl experience at all. Buy some record cleaning tools and poly inner sleeves for your vinyl and your mind will be blown I promise. I started with the PT01 portable myself and deciding to buy a nice entry level setup was one of the best decisions of my life. I later upgraded to a slightly sub pro setup but it cost me dearly. I found a $3000 turntable for $800 which was a deal I couldn't pass up but in order to afford it I had to part with one of my most prized possessions.... My Mint purple 1st edition Ray Barbee pro model that you so graciously signed at the 1up bar in Denver a few years back. I still have the pics of you signing it and I photographed the shit out of it before I let it go.... have a print up on my fridge to this day. Your a top favorite skater of mine and such a rad person generally I thank you for the bits of joy you brought to my life. Later days
