Two-Man Chainsaw - Bar & Chain [Restoration]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The time has come for this chainsaw restoration. This specific saw restoration is for me and I have been wanting to get to this tool for a long time. I started the disassembly in November 2018 and had to wait a while for some rare parts to arrive. This chainsaw is a McCulloch 99 two-man chainsaw made in 1954. The engine is 161cc and the powerhead alone is 51lbs making it one of the largest production chainsaws ever.
In this video I focus on the bar, chain, and gearbox. Everything had rust and dirt removed and painted parts got 3 coats of yellow enamel and 2 coats of a 2K clear paint for gas and oil resistance. McCulloch chainsaws had very inconsistent yellow colours, so I tried to match the colour of this specific saw the best I could. The gear box was in fantastic condition and did not need much work at all whereas the bar and magnesium castings needed much more love. I sharpened the chain back to an aggressive 35 degree angle because I am sure the saw can handle it.
I was surprised to notice that this model saw does not have a screw adjustment for tensioning the chain. I am not sure if this will cause issues when cutting and I will die.
In the next video I will work on the completely destroyed muffler and the unique and complicated carburetor.
In the final video I will work on the powerhead and hopefully cut some wood!
I'd like to thank Evapo-Rust for sponsoring this video.

This Chinaberry tree had two trunks. kzread.infoUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 The wood is soft and rotten and the trees are hazardous when they tower over your house. The first trunk was actually healthy and about 16 inches diameter. I had to push a little when making the face cut at an angle because the wood was still healthy and strong. This thing barely slowed down and just chewed right through fast. The trunk did not fall in the direction I wanted but it missed the power lines so I guess I did OK. The second tunk was pretty rotted. It was exactly the diameter of the blade, 18 inches. The first pass made a perfect face cut on the first try. I was getting good at cutting with this saw. Unfortunately, there was so much rot that an inch or two into the back cut it just snapped. I am glad it held together long enough for that good face cut. I know I did not want to hang out under it. One strong breeze and I was a pancake. My karma must be good. The small trunk snapped a two-ton rope so I guess there were six tons of wood felled. I still need to de-limb the tree and pile up a bonfire. I look forward to it. This saw works great. It is fun to use. It cuts well.

Greatest intro of all time also you don't destroy tools I think your restoration increases their value. You take a tool in very bad condition and return it to its glory days. As to chain adjustment, you don't tighten the nut at the sprocket end but push in the bar to allow mounting the chain. how strong the spring still is is how much it pushes the bar back out. THEN tighten the nut. If the spring is baffed, there will be virtually no tension but you won't know for sure until the chain bites into wood as that will want to draw the bar back and might let the chain off. (Make sure the sprocket end is tight and you should be okay.) In any event, you will be remembered fondly.

Glad you stuck with the canary yellow. I lived in the city were these chainsaws, weed eaters and even go karts were made. Lake havasu City,Az. I even worked for McCulloch for a few months before they went belly up in 97. I was a machine operator in which I made connecting rods and once I got good at that then I was moved up to a CNC operator making pistons for weed wacker motors. It was a great job. My city has the actual London bridge from london in which Robert P. McCulloch bought back in the early 70's and had it disassembled in london, shipped over and then reassembled and in doing so he created his own little island. If anybody want's to go to a desert paradise then go to my town. Nice rebuild and I hope you will be getting that engine going soon...

Your channel rocks my friend. I've been binge watching since it was recommended to me. Your little comedic elements are the best. Love your wench too.

I know these videos take a long time to make and I just wanted to say that the wait is 100% worth it for that intro. Keep up the great work, seeing a clean tool at the end always brings warmth to my soul.

That big bladed screwdriver is awesome! what a beast! Looking forward to the second part of the video. I've held on to the helper handle (the handle at the opposite side of the engine) before. If you like scary things, give it a try.
