The way we behave affects the way people treat us, and experiencing this can be quite eye-opening. Here I describe two characters whom I played (amongst many others) years ago, whose treatment by other characters let me experience life as some others lead it.

    Cajun Guy It's happened to me in tabletop games. It was a setting heavily inspired by the Icelandic Sagas in which each PC was a heroic figure who was cursed to die before their time. This is what his death should have sounded like: Once in days of yore there lived a man hight Haakon Birgersson, son of Þegn Birger of Jømsgaarđr. Haakon Skarphéđinn he was called by many. When all the world quivered and shook, the fell fire-beast arisen, hordes of horrors filled skies and seas ajd trampled all lands, it was he who gathered them l, those bold and brave hirdmenn. Sixty men rode to that pass, but only three marched out - o'er fifty men died there, a place hight Tröngt Rökk. All around him fell his men, yet strong and stout he stood, but one arrow can kill a man and yet he took on five. He hewed with sverđ and smote with skjöldur even while he bled - he saw that bale-beast, screaming, roaring, and yet he still charged it boldly. With his mail and helm and shield no alfur could lay him low, e'en filled with arrows, striking swiftly, he ran the draugr through. There surrounded, blows on-taking, Haakon hewed with sverđ hight Gramr - his shield splintered under axe-blows, yet his onslaught continued. Odo, that kind southern priest, did all he could to aid him, but so surrounded, so far away, there was naught he could do. He took that draugr by the throat with his open hand, and dashed it's head accross the rocks as a club then struck his head. Dazed and dizzy yet still unwav'ring Haakon struck off its head, so the draugr got its death as the man cut out its heart. Sixty men rode to Tröngt Rökk, but only three marched out - there was felled Haakon strong-handed, he oft hight Skarphéđinn. Not a beast escaped that pass as Haakon's last breath was drawn, without direction, without honor, the alfar abandoned the fight. And this is what the GM said: Yeah... uh, Haakon's dead. So's the enemy general, but... uh... yeah... good job? I guess? Roll a new character. ... F€€€ you, Jason...

    There are many "living history" groups where I live. They are very interesting and have amazing craftsman. However over the years of being involved with them I realized it's essentially very elaborate intellectual historical LARPing. People come up with names, backstories, make historic clothing and learn extremely difficult trades to demonstrate. There just isn't much fighting or a system.

Be larpers but we just call them farbs:)

    Lindy's LARPING sounds a lot more sophisticated than one of the few I went on. I played a werewolf. For reasons best known to the organisers, part of my werewolf outfit was that I wore a lot of camo netting. I need spectacles to see but I also wore a werewolf mask. Now, I don't know if you realise this but when you wear a mask and spectacles, your glasses steam up. And the whole thing was done after the sun had set. So I spent a whole night, trying to walk around essentially blind through undergrowth. Wearing netting, which caught on every single plant I tried to pass. So, rather than be a fearsome creature killing off a multitude of party members, I was a blind, almost constantly immobile and incapacitated creature.

  • @Klomster88

    @Klomster88

    6 жыл бұрын

    Well, it depends on where you live. Larp is differently popular in different regions. And also different in its layout in different regions. For example, larps in USA tend to be more DnD-esque while larps in europe tend to be more improv theatre. But of course, it always varies. How i did was that i had heard of larp loads of times. Was in a medieval society where about half the members also larped. So i thought, "Well, i already roleplay, so i should at least try larp." Found one on the internet and joined it. Showed up with only the clothes on my body, not even a blanket, so people had to pitch in so i could sleep somewhere and borrow something to sleep in. Fun times :D Pro tip, get more blankets. Preferably wool. Anyway. So, step one. Google search local larps, like if you live in northern germany, search for that. Or perhaps "German larps." Make sure you get the local name for larp if there is one. In Sweden for example it is called "Lajv". Step two, if you find one or more, find out which and or if you want to go to that larp. Check out if the way it plays out appeals to you, if the rules of the in game world and the rules of the larp is what you'd like. For example, here in Sweden, it usually is "opt out" of physical contact. So one says a keyword and tell if you IRL can't handle someone touching your arm. For example in america, it's often "Opt in", with the classic "May i touch your body?" often showing up in videos. It's different in different regions so i don't really know how it is where you live (since i don't even know where that is.) Step three. Regardless if you decide to go to a larp or not. It's a good idea to talk to some larpers. If you are going to the same larp or is just curious. I've found that larpers are 99% of the time completely cool people (i've never met the 1%, but i've heard of them) and are super friendly and helpful. So find if they have a facebook group, a webpage, a local society or hangout that people who larp go to. Then hang out with those people, trying to get help with creating a character and/or costumes or just talk about what it's all about. Step four. Now you are either going to a larp, or know how to get into a larp. So this step is ......... Step five. Profit.

    This was really interesting. I feel that getting into larp is one of the things I should do in my life at some point. But honestly, I'm lazy, pessimistic, asocial, not strong, not fast, not vigorous, I'm picky with food, I have a short attention span, I get bored easily, I'm not motivated enough to make stuff myself, etc. So I'm not sure how I'd make it happen. Also, I live in sweden, so any larp group around here is bound to speak swedish, which is a shame, because I don't really see swedish as my first language. I live so much in games and on the internet, that english is my default thought-language, ESPECIALLY when it comes to topics such as fantasy, combat, history, intellectual topics, etc. Swedish is only really for mundane topics to me, and even then I often can't find words to express myself, because my brain has me talking the way I would talk in english, so when I I can't find an eloquent and similar word or phrasing in swedish as I would say something in english, I can get stuck in mid-sentence. Not that I'm completely without qualities though. I do have at least SOME ability towards creative problem solving, even if it's not trained well. I don't play any instrument, but I can sing, or so I've been told, and tend to believe, but I'm self taught and often feel that I don't know what I'm doing and I don't always agree with others what sounds the best(I also think I have SOMETHING of a nick for learning songs in weird languages, which I guess could be cool if I wanna learn a song in elvish or some such fantasy nonsense) I can draw, even if I've barely done it in years(shame it is). I also fancy myself an analytical thinker, a debator, but mostly regarding nerdy, intellectual or philosophical topics, more so than practical or political ones, if that has any relevance at all. I'm not very confident or good at leading, nor am I very good at following either. Whilst I'm socially kind of strange, I'm not necessarily shy at all, I can comfortably take up space when I feel I have something to say or when it's otherwise right to do so. I guess I can be humorous as well. I think it may have something to do with how many strong and entertaining personalities I watch on youtube, I think some of the talent gets picked up. Still, I don't think I'd be good in fight, even when I did such things i my childhood and liked it, I was never much good at it, and I don't think I'm suited at all to physical activity aside form that, except for maybe something like climbing, I'm somewhat naturally limber and agile. My sense of orientation is frankly quite poor as well. Why would anyone read this comment?

    @Lindybeige - so, because of Agin, I have to share... Shortly after "Everquest" came out, my friend got me to play. At first I tried various classes trying to find something compatible with his. Finally he told me "Just play whatever you *want* to play." So I created a gnome wizard. Over time I created a backstory for him and gave him a personality. He was largely based on one of my favorite heroes of literature, Percival William Williams, whom you may know as Kipling's "Wee Willie Winkie". I made him 400 years old chronologically, but 6 years old emotionally, and he spoke with a lisp. Years later I worked up a story of how he was "damaged" defending the Dragons of Norrath as they made their retreat to Skyshrine. He was a very good person. He was generous, although usually poor. He delighted in simple things, especially acts of kindness. He was courageous, holding to the last minute to make sure everyone was in range of his Evacuation. He *hated* the giants of Kael Drakkel, because they were bullies. Why were they bullies? Well... they were giants, weren't they? And giants are big (unlike gnomes), and therefore obviously bullies. As the dragons of skyshrine were enemies of the giants, my wizard was one of the few characters would could wander around skyshrine visible (I later roleplayed that he couldn't get through skyshrine for all the dragons wanting to pick him and put him on their laps and asking him to stay for tea). Unlike his creator, my wizard was very popular... socially. Not so much when it came to raiding. See, my wizard was very protective. So, for instance, say on a raid of the Plane of Fear, his job would be to wait til a semi-boss mob was halfway down in health, then start blasting it. Well, the warriors and other tanks would be beating it down, trying to keep aggro, with the clerics healing them... and then the warriors would start dying... and my wizard would "take over"... to my surprise he began shouting "STOP HUHTING MY FWIENDS!" and began blasting the monster for all he was worth, spending prodigal amounts of mana, while the clerics, *whose job was to keep the tanks alive*, instead of letting him die and the tanks regain aggro, tried to keep him alive. With the result being everybody out of mana, the monster dead, me dead, and me being blamed for even the deaths that took place before my wizard began blasting (I suspect a few people were pissed at seeing just how much damage an unleashed (unhinged?) wizard could pump out, too.) I loved playing that wizard. Looking back, I suspect it's because it allowed me to be who I wanted to be but have been afraid to be in real life. edit to add: oh, yeah, I remember how he used to go around trying to pet the animals... and he wouldn't kill wolves unless he absolutely had to (that's attributable to the real me; I wouldn't play Tomb Raider because of the sounds of the dogs being hurt at the beginning).

    "Or tret in the northeast of England" Aha, this always gets me. I grew up essentially between Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. I lived in Yorks and went to primary school there, so I was well accustomed to hearing "tret", but then I went to secondary in Lincs, and a heap of northern colloquialisms were shed, a mere 20 minute to half hour drive away. Then I found myself in Yorkshire for 6th form again and suddenly had a head of year who used "tret" and it brought it all back. For 5 years I'd barely socialised with anyone else from my area, kinda felt I missed out a bit.

    One thing to consider about Agin - a lot of the people who LARP are people who've been the victims of some degree of bullying - it tends to be that intellectual but socially awkward group who bullies like to laugh at to mask their own inferiority. From that sort of background, you get two sorts of people: the folks who know what it's like to be a victim and thus try to protect others from becoming victims, and the folks who lash out at everything because they deserve to be victims just as much as the person lashing out did. The latter type tends not to wind up in tight knit social circles, so LARP groups, as a type of tight knit social circle, probably have a higher than normal population of those protective ex-victim types. That said, there are also cases of cops who have posed as wheelchair bound folks in the slums of Vancouver with hundred dollar bills sticking out of money pouches - the idea was this was an easy sting operation - bait thieves with easy victims and amounts of money that are quite large to the average slum denizen. Time after time, they'd have someone approach them privately, in perfect conditions for such a theft, and mention that they had money sticking out of their bag. The undercover cop would fumble with the bag, and the homeless person would offer help, closing the bag properly and handing it back to them, advising them to tuck it somewhere out of sight, and usually providing directions to a nicer part of town. They canned the program within a week because it didn't work because apparently even street folks in the biggest slum in Canada aren't sufficiently asinine to rob wheelchair bound old people. This is including people the undercover cop recognized as drug dealers, shoplifters, car thieves, etc. Or they have a better nose for cops than the Vancouver Police Department gives them credit for.

    Ive been very active for a long time on roleplay servers for different games. Its basically like larp online. If theres a character that does mistakes like for example paying too much, mistaking currency etc. everyone tries to help that player. We dont do it because we want to help the character, we do it because we want to help the player. I know that a player that has no money wont have as much fun in character. I think thats what happened to you aswell. People werent trying to help your character, they were trying to help you as a player.

    Like your Agin character my son is pretty gullible and has understanding issues. He has learning difficulties, is "differently abled" (or whatever the PC phrase de jour is). He has no concept of value so he would not think twice about paying £50 for a taxi a couple of miles (he learnt at his school ( Deanburn "special school") how to 'do the numbers' eg £10 -£2.87 but he has no real understanding of what that means) . But like your character people tend not to 'take a loan' of him. People in the main (obviously there are some who you wouldn't trust if they said rain was wet) are honest and treat people with a straight bat and if the person they are dealing with is a bit simple or easy to manipulate or... , it tends to bring their nurturing nature to the fore.

Batman, pretty simple, he's a detective who is also a billionaire and knows martial arts and uses his costume as a way to scare criminals.......but wait, he knows 127 different styles of martial arts, has self taught himself 7 PHDS and His company has corporations on every continent. He has defense contracts. He could use dollar bills as toilet paper, clog up his solid gold toilet, and then hire a third world country’s worth of plumbers to fix it.

    Kind of an anticlimactic ending for old Barkan, to be honest. The way you were building it up, and the way I would end it if I were writing the book of Barkan's adventures, I was expecting the judge that originally condemned him to step up and demand his resurrection after seeing how just and honorable he was. Barkan realizes that not all rich people are evil, he finally gets recognized for his selfless service, maybe he gets to get it on with his love interest, roll credits.
