Two essential log splitter modifications.

Here is a quick video of two log splitter modifications I wouldn't be without. The rack to hold and catch logs while splitting is a real back saver. And the stroke limiter saves time while splitting.

I've split 5 cords through it so far. Does what I need it to. kzread.infoUgkxUyQswtttSffRMblGbrhCvZn7JkhtG1-7 I scrounge all my firewood and am not equipped to handle big wood, but for logs up to 24 inch diameter or so, it works great. I've been amazed by some of the gnarly bur oak and elm crotches it has split. For the tougher stuff within it's size range, you might have to study the piece a bit to decide the best attack, but if you split smart it's up to the job. It did arrive low on oil, and I was would have nicked it half a star for that, but it has regained my full confidence. UPDATE NOVEMBER 2021: Still going strong after all these years. I love the one-handed operation. Hope it's still in production if I ever need to replace it

That is an excellent design for the stroke limiter. I see it is not stressing the wedge or piston at all due to the brilliant design.

A simpler limiter would be to drill a few holes in the bed and drop a bolt in behind the ram head. Easy adjustment by moving the bolt. Just had that idea, hope it helps.

The stroke limiter is a brilliant idea. I would have some failsafe in the release mechanism in case there is a jam or something. You really don't want to tear your control valve apart. Maybe a spring or even a decent pair a magnets that will work as a shear pin.

It can stick depending on what I'm splitting. Some oak and really knotty fir can be problematic. Usually once it's split once though you are home free.

Very few people know how to use a hydraulic on wedge splitter.... So many people carve a piece at a time when in actuality many shallow splits will tare the grain especially if there is a good center protrusion on the base
