Great idea! Frankly I'm surprised "slip-on" wedges like these aren't already sold for 5 and 6.5 ton splitters that don't have removable wedges given how much more efficiently they split the wood and how much less stress they put on the pump when splitting. I'll have to get me some good thick scrap and do this on my old Speeco 5 ton. Been wanting to find a project to break out my welder for so I don't get rusty (pun intended).

Nice job, though I have found that rather than trying to spot through the centre like that, I start the split closer to one side, then work around the log to complete the job without any need of modification. If you like to manufacture in steel, go for it... :)

The oil soaked rag should be balled up as tight as possible and placed in a wicker waste basket with highly combustible materials? Also, I lost those needle nosed vise grips in the same field you were digging in so please send them back to me. After you clean them up of course. 😆 Good job on the splitter 👍🏼

Canadian tire has a $30 attachment for the non splitting end with a wedge on it. It the gives you a wedge in each end and makes splitting fresh wood or knotty wood nice and easy. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Having a double header splitting wedges improves performance greatly. Allow doughtful logs to be split. Suggest the wedges are honed almost knife edge. Appears to make penetration easier & less strain on hydraulic pump, electric motor. Making a finer edge radically altered the loading , stresses imposed on the machine. Went from overload, to NO PROBLEM, what's next boss . . .

Great modification on that log splitter, I toss my oil soaked rags in the corner of my garage, and wait till they start to smolder, and use that as a natural way to fumigate my garage.

Thank you for this video - just what i needed. Another benefit is that the ram gets closer to the splitting wedge. It's so annoying when you have a log with a nut near the end, and it doesn't get split all the way, because the ram stops short. I tried following along, but i seemed you welded a short piece in the back, and then you later ground that off, and replaced it with a full plate? Guess you where just winging it, as you went along :) Did you take the slope of the original wedge into consideration when constructing the new wedge, or is it just straight? Again - thank you for the great video, and idea :)

That was a lot of extra work. Why didn't u just cut an axe head in 1/2 and weld it to the splitter wedge

Rags soaked with linseed oil should be stored in a non flammable airtight container until next use (like an old pickle jar or something)...or burned intentionally if not to be used again.

That is true with a maul, axe, and log splitter. If the wedge is blunt its NOT GOING TO SPLIT. It got to penetrate to split

What is wrong with sharpening the existing edge? Your plate is mild steel your existing wedge is not.

The shape of the wedge doesn't lend itself to cutting into the wood even if it's sharp - if you've ever tried to split wood with a splitting maul you would see why

If you use the right chemicals you can get most of that rust off either that or you could do I don’t know what they call electrolysis were you a hook it up to a battery charger and you put it in salt water none of that should work to
