Great presentation. My hose broke and I fixed it following your methods largely. But allow me to offer some thoughts and suggestions for others. There are basically three approaches to fix the hose breakage: 1. Buy the part from Waterpik and replace it. ($17 plus shipping.) 2. Buy the third party part and replace it. (About $10 plus shipping.) 3. Open up the handle, cut the hose short and re-attach it. I ended up taking the third approach and spent about an hour. It was successful. I fixed it because I am handy and because I enjoyed doing it. But that doesn't mean it is the best approach for most people. If it breaks again, I will take the first approach next time. Let me explain. When fixing it, I found that taking the handle apart isn't that easy. The housing is ultrasonically welded together--top and bottom--and you need to basically pry it open and glue it back. It is doable, but somewhat trickly. (But if you are successful breaking it apart with all parts intact, the rest is fairly straight forward.) You may hurt your fingers. You may break the parts. And even if you fix it successfully, the old hose may break again in the near future because it is old and becomes somewhat brittle. Replacing the part is far easier. The price is cheap given that you are using it daily for many years. It is just not worth the time and effort fixing it. But I recommend buying the original part instead of the no name brand. The price difference is small, but you have the quality assured. The knock-off parts usually need to get around the patents and the changes they make often compromise the product and usability. This isn't always the case, but I have seen too many examples. They may also go cheap on the material which is not as durable. BTW, I am a product designer for medical devices. Good luck. Additional tips: before you re-attach the hose, dip the end in the hot water for a minute or so. It would soften the hose somewhat, making it easier for pushing in. The water lubes the inner wall of the hose. It helps. Also, replace the on/off cap correctly and exactly as shown. Or it won't work properly. Important! Finally, you don't need to detach the hose from the base for the repair. You only work on the other end.

what about the reed valve at base of the hose, it has a bump on one side, and I'm not sure which direction it should go?

If you are referring to the end that fits on the bottom of the unit, it only mounts one way. If it doesn't fit you may have the wrong replacement wand and hose. If you are referring to something else, let me know and I will try to answer for you.

I think you refer to the brown thing that is in the hole in the unit. I also doubt that is filter but that it acts a bit like a one-way-valve. In that case the bump most likely should point into the unit, created by the suction-part of the unit.
