This WaterPik WP100-W stopped working only months into operation. Opening it up revealed elegant simplicity in design with electronics even I could understand! The culprit... a 50 cent motor thermal cutoff fuse on this $99 device. Sparks ahead! Be sure to stay safe and discharge the giant capacitor as it could still be charged hours after being unplugged!

The WaterPik model WP-100W has a design flaw and should be recalled. The fault is in the gear-switch mechanism that allows the internal switch contacts of the switch to be partially closed, this results in motor stalling at full position eventually blowing the thermal fuse. A DC motor under a load will run hot with too little voltage. A low voltage forces a motor to draw extra current thus blowing the thermal fuse.

my kid dropped mine off the counter and it stopped working we never threw it away tho today i opened it up bypassed the switch that didnt work , saw this vid , bypassed the fuse AND IT WORKS now if i can get it back together rah hah hah thank u lots bröther

Glad to see you saved it from the dumpster! If you can get a fuse, that will save it from overheating and burning the motor but meanwhile at least it works!
going to repair one next weekend where the resister broke one lead off the board.. slight burn smell around it.. gotta wonder how long it will work once that repair is done, lol. So bleeding the cap with some sparking is essential to doing board work?
if anybody reads this, do not bypass the fuse. If it wasn't needed, the manufacturer/engineers wouldn't have included it. if you're going to replace components, make sure you get the exact same rated parts to replace them with. these machines are designed to run at specific specs and you start going around changing capacitance or resistance ratings, you could further break the machine or hurt yourself

Yes I agree, this is a valid and useful comment. If you are going to work on electronics, read some electronic principles books, basic theory and repair, and know how to operate safely... both in diagnosing and testing, as well as replacing. Even in this video you can see the energy stored in that capacitor that can easily shock you if you don't know what you are doing! And if you don't repair things properly they are a fire and electric shock risk!
Hello, could you tell me what name to give yourself to the integrated circuit board that is on the inside of the dental irrigator, is the board that makes the engine spin and that drives the piston? In case this board is the Waterpik Waterflosser WP-660C it has this identification number ING TCX E250336 94V-0?
Thanks for the video. In my unit, the resistor had one leg separated from the board. I soldered it back and it will run. But the resistor burn very hot and melted the solder joint. I tested it and it reads 48 ohm. Is the resistor still good?

I don't know, check the bands on the resistor and see what value it should be. That value (48 ohm) seems very low and could explain why it is running hot and melting the solder.... it is behaving like a short. A higher value would not allow as much current through, reducing heat but would affect voltage. V=IR.

It's a 51 ohm resistor, so it's probably still good. It might be worth replacing it with a higher wattage resistor that won't get so hot. I've made similar repairs in many appliances.
I have wp-667 and I opened it up I do some check I found the capacitor doesn't response what I can do if I'm living in place has only 220v because I haven't usen it first time I got off and didn't work again. Should I fix it or throw it.

Check to see if it's adaptable to 220V or not, otherwise you'll need to use a converter.
I can see why you would think the resistor is bad. To bleed the cap down to zero volts, or near that, you would want to use a small fan, or motor with some sort of load. The key being how much voltage will be on the cap and if the motor can take it for a short time, or not. LOL, you really need to make a little holder for that voltmeter so it doesn't appear you haven't make many videos before. You could keep it simple with some tape and just about anything to act as a wedge with the tape holding everything in place for best camera angle.

I agree the fuse is clearly a problem. That capacitor would give a really nasty shock if shorted across a finger or two. I am wondering who you found to buy a replacement fuse from? I haven't torn down my non-working waterpik yet and it is likely a different brand. Nice, I see you have a part 2 I can watch.
I wish you would have shown how to access the screws on the bottom. The two on the hose and 4 other deeply recessed were obvious, but something is still holding the bottom on. Screws? The search continues. After I get the bottom off, the rest of your info may be quite helpful. Waterpik does have a 3-yr warranty but is a PITA to deal with, imo. EDIT: it seems the rubber plugs (?) were holding it together.

Yes there are rubber plugs that are inserting in the holes and then expand on the other side that hold it. You just have to pull apart and they squeeze and come out. Same goes when you reassemble. Hope you were able to fix yours!

The rotary "speed/flow controller" knob needs to be prised off to allow the top and bottom to separate. I used a flat blade screw driver and prised it gently at various places around the circumference of the knob until, at one point, it came off easily. The rubber plug things are suspension/vibration absorbers
oh man, mine wouldn't run after bypassing the fuse here like you suggested. Any other common fails that you know of?

It could be the actual motor burned out. It's fairly simply construction but I would test continuity across the motor inputs, see if there is any resistance at all or if an open circuit. You can also check to see if there is any voltage off the power supply to see if the fault lies there somewhere. Good luck and let me know what you find out!
Could you please give me the colors of the resistor, the one that is green? I would like its color code that it has

Unfortunately I don't have this device, it was a friend's who asked me to fix it. Check in the video if you see any indication of color bands. You can also do a calculation and see what resistor should go there, given the voltage and current you are trying to restrict (based on what the motor can take)... that can help you get a rough estimate as well of the value.
Before you take apart the WaterPik for no water surging through the pik, check that the on/off button on the handle is switched to “On.”

You didn't talk about how to remove the power level knob. That is really hard to pull out and needs to be removed to disassemble.

Yes, you just pull it off, I believe it has a "D" connection, friction-fit on there.
Hey can you help me with my waterpik aquarius 660? It has no power. Can i also use thermal fuse there?

Definitely open it up and check! Use a multimeter to check continuity across the fuse, it is worth a shot. If that doesn't work, start narrowing things down... It is a very simple circuit, very few parts involved. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Good luck fixing it, a 10-pack of fuses is very cheap, and it'll last you for years (may need to change it out every couple years because it fails again and again).

Yes you can, but then if your motor gets too hot there will be nothing to turn it off and you may burn your motor. The fuse is "sacrificial" for a reason, to save more expensive parts.

@@devhackmod What about replacing the thermal fuse with a thermal breaker (self-resetting) of the same value? Seems like that might be the way to go if it is possible.

@@NJP76 Yes that would certainly make sense. However, they decided to make this with a non-resettable fuse perhaps because it doesn't happen that often. Thankfully these fuses are cheap to replace but just a pain especially for people who don't know how to take apart their device and put a new one in.
