    So, so true. In fact, the whole Kpop industry needs to change. Instead of making 'idols', the emphasis should be moved towards producing artists. Cause artists are just talented, trained people. Idols are objects, and you don't have to think about the feelings of an object. The Tiffany Young interview on the Zach Sang show talks all about this... it's really interesting on this topic of changes that need to happen to Kpop.

    I think they were traumatized by the diet restrictions. At least Dahyun... its good they talk about it now and most of them can laugh about it but to starve someone and deny them food is literally a method of torture. Also I feel like saying "but now they are so successful" gives an excuse for these methods. They are successful despite going through that, not because of it.

    They quite literally were Momo was told to loose 15 pounds in a week so she didn't eat anything at all and forced herself to spit. Sana as a trainee fainted in a bath house. Perhaps the saddest thing of all is they were always at healthy weights rather Kpop demands and expects unrealistic body expectations. Momo didn't need to loose 15 pounds etc. When you say traumatic I don't think enough people realize that, not only with their trainee period but filming Sixteen. You can tell in the air they don't like to talk about it all these years later, Nayeon herself said she did not like talking about it. That after each shoot they would go outside to walk and cry. To me what really cemented how bad the experience was for them was when they described how they felt the moment it was announced they had won. They said they didn't feel excitement and immense happiness nor disappointment, they said they felt numb and if anything and overwhelming feeling of relief that the torment was over, only later on did they start feeling excited to debut. You can tell if you watch how some of them are just reaction less.

  • @stefannico

    @stefannico

    @@katiapereira882 yeah, I've recently watched sixteen and Momo had a sixpack by then already, even before they debuted. So why would she have to lose weight, especially since she is the performer and dancer of a whole generation. She has to be physically fit, not starved. Also when they were announced the winners, it looked like Jeongyeons mental health problems started right there. She had that "thousand mile stare" into nothing. Maybe because she was overwhelmed by happiness but I think there might have been negative emotions too. I guess we won't find out until they disband and maybe disclose some of that stuff in later years. But then again, thats what non disclosure agreements are for. I just wish them health and happiness.

    I used to be insecure about my weight back then cause ppl always tell me I was chubby that I forced myself to eat 1 meal a day and drink a pill for weight loss...then I ended up in the hospital. Culture normalizes all kinds of ugly stuff when it comes to womens and girls bodies. I remember watching sixteen and Jihyos mom saying something like "oh she used to be so pretty but now she gained weight", Jihyo was completely healthy and normal weight in sixteen. Companies lean into the culture. Im hoping the stronger western influence lately starts somewhat of a change, instead of just making idols lie. On a more personal note, i remember about 20 years ago, we were about 12, when our PE teacher (an older woman) gave "tips" on how to lose 5kg in a week. It included eating nothing but clear soup for 4 days. I thought she was stupid back then, but it didnt really hit me how harmful her "advice" was until much later.

    The way that managers and companies treat their trainees and artists when it comes to diet is obscene... They have control of course, but not a "are you eating well? " control. No, losing weight is all it matters. No concern whatsoever of if they're severely damaging the health of their trainees... And then we have stuff like Momo's infamous one-ice-cube-per-day diet. Are you kidding me? Assume responsibility for your actions and start treating the artists well... No food coupons if you're on a diet? The stuff out beloved artists have to go through.... 😞

I'm really amazed that Twice keep their energy and positiveness even after their hardships, well all kpop groups in general. I just feel like me watching is just encouraging these treatments. But stopping kpop is leaving this colourful and super funny world. I just think kpop can still be a happy place without those radical treatments. I mean not eating at all ?? Wth?? Dont make kids diet regularly unless theyre overweight / obese / unhealthy. You could affect their growth and create unhealthy views on nutrition, like here, where the girls think theyre beautiful because they dieted. Just eat good and balanced food and exercise regularly. Dieting before a performance is okay if it isnt too much weight. 10 lbs isnt that hard to lose in a week as it is mostly water and replacing regular food with low density low calorie food.

    I think it meant not allowed to eat in cafeteria so they wouldn't see each other since they didn't practice together.

    In high school I went from 138lbs to 115lbs in a month. It was stressful, practicing (wrestling) is super hard and I was literally starving. But I kept at it because being competitive in the correct weight class for my frame was what I wanted to do at the time. I thought it justified the pain. Nobody forced or gaslighted me into doing it. Dieting sucks but if you don't want to compete in a field of endeavor where weight is important, you don't have to. South Korea and the West have that going for them. What's the alternative? Body acceptance idols? +sized beauties who sing and dance? I don't know that I would be on U2B looking for that content. I mean, I get the whole body acceptance movement but it goes too far when I hear some argue how being fat is healthy. Beautiful? Maybe you can argue about that, eye of the beholder and all, but obesity is not healthy and kills more people than all other preventable causes of death. None of these girls are obese. Not now, not when they were trainees. But they're competing in a marketplace of aesthetics for monetary gain and personal satisfaction/achievement. JYP or any entertainment company can choose to work with people who fit their criteria. Self control and self maintenance are important criteria for these agencies. With so many wanting the fame and fortune and no shortage of super talented, beautiful aspirants, the agencies can afford to choose among the "best". Tiny differences can make or break your dreams. It is what it is.

    This is such an ignorant, ugly comment. Body Mass Index, the thing that doctors use to categorized peoples health depending on their weight have been proven to be useless. I'm currently an underweight person, but if you look at my blood test my health its completely fine. It goes both ways. A persons health should be only a concern between them and their doctors and whoever else they want to share it with. You don't go out saying skinny people are unhealthy, then don't go away saying fat people are unhealthy. I know skinny people who are extremely sick and I know "obese" people who have perfect health. The girls are fine and you cannot know their health by just looking at them. How do you not know if someone could have anemia? or an autoinmmune disease? You don't know those things by just looking at them. Same goes with fat people. And beauty can also be a cultural construction, as I have seen, south koreans are very obssesed with weight and have a really high rate of eating disorders, to them, anyone above 50kg is fat. So yeah, that should change for them and for the rest of the world. And if u think fat people cannot be beautiful (because they're "ill") then let me tell you you are ableist and an ugly person on the inside. A link for u to read globalnews.ca/news/2523620/are-you-still-using-bmi-to-measure-your-health-dont-docs-say/#:~:text=U.S.%20doctors%20suggest%20BMI%20is,even%20though%20they%20aren't. but google its free.

    I totally agree with you and all these comments talking about how JYP tortured these girls are frankly annoying. These girls weren’t forced to be trainees. They could quit any time they wanted to if they didn’t want to diet anymore. But they wanted to be a celebrity so they stuck it out and look where they are now. Also, comments talking about body positivity from a western perspective but keep in mind in order for a K-pop group to do well they need to succeed in their own country first and it’s just a hard fact that idols who don’t fit the Korean beauty standard will not gain popularity as much.

    to all people saying idol's diet is strict n torture remember. they chose it. they know the consequences. they read it, think abt it clearly before sign the contract. that's adult life. you choose a job and deal with the risk. idols get a lot of money and fame but with a price to pay like their freedom and mental health just like other profession doctor n nurses are exhausted and prone to be infected by virus soldiers got high chance to die/crippled for life construction and factory workers, and a lot more
