Great video. My method on breaking in my 2021 tw200 is just driving slow . I have about 200 miles now on it. Bought around November last year. I changed the oil at about 150 miles. I'm changing it again around 400 or so.just because. I'm a new motorcycle rider so it's easy for me to drive slow. So yea that's my method. Lol. I wish you had this video last year. I would've tried the heat method as well. Thanks you very much for your content. It's very enjoyable to watch. I hope you do more riding videos soon.

Thanks for the vid! My >opinion< on break in is, just go ride the bike as you normally would. Do a dozen fast accelerations to full speed, roll off the throttle completely off and let the engine compression brake to set the rings. Dino oil break in, synth after that. This is just my opinion I'm not a Yammie engineer. Don't baby it and don't ride it like you stole it.

Congratulations to the most important video ever made. It’s been a real beef of mine watching videos of guys that just bought their new motorcycle and right out of the gate want to see what the top speed is? That’s one reason I wouldn’t ever want to buy a used bike. In 2007 I bought a new Yamaha XT225. Pretty much the same engine as the TW. Followed the owners manual breaking in to the tee, I actually even went further. I never went over 1/3 throttle or over 45 mph for the first 600 miles. Then not over 55 till I had 1000. But actually it was much further than that. I bought the bike in Michigan but was being job transferred to Miami, Fl. I put the 600 miles on it in about 3 days so I could have the valves check before I left for Florida. I took Interstate I-75 all the way to Florida at 55 mph. (1500 miles) I never knew what top speed was till my bike had over 2000 miles. (Topped out at 80) Long story short, I put 16;000 miles in the first 10 months with 3300 of that inside Mexico on a solo tour of Mexico. (I quit my job after 4 months in Miami) I had 36;000 miles on it when I sold that bike and felt that engine was rock solid. I actually felt the engine would go 100k that’s how I felt about the bike. If you want tremendous MPG, don’t wind the bike out AT ALL going through the gears. Lots of low end torque, no need to. Once in top gear then cruise what ever you like. That was usually not more than 65mph on the XT. 80% of 80 mph)

@@MOBStreet83 I’ll tell you how I came to buying a XT to begin with. In 2007 a guy at work told me about this gal from Japan that everybody was talking about on some adventure riding forum. I don’t remember the exact forum. So I looked it up. This Japanese gal about 40 had spent the last 5 year on a world tour. When she hit the USA, she had ridden 250,000 miles, and been in 90 countries. The US was her last country. She had her bike flown to L.A and started out from there. She broke down in San Diego. This is where the story starts. Somehow, she meets this guy and he lets her use his garage to work on her bike. He, was a member of this adventure ridding forum. So, she fixed her bike and left, and he told about her story on the forum. Well, this gal started emailing him, telling him her progress and also sending him lots of pictures of her last 5 years. He would post a lot of these on the forum. So, almost daily all of us would be checking in to see where she was at now? This went on for about a month. She crossed the bottom of the US, to Key West, Florida. Then up the east coast till probably Maine. Then across the top of the US. One guy on the forum from Montana arranged through the San Diego guy to have her sleep and take a shower at his house. Only the guy in SanDiego had direct contact with her. She hit Washington turned right and rode to Alaska. From there she came back down to L.A. That was going to be the end of her 5 year, 250,000 mile, 91 countries trip. Here’s some facts of her story that I remember vividly. She traveled on 2 lane roads at about 45 mph. (She was really loaded down) Her traveling budget was $10 a day. (2007) She was on her second motorcycle. Not sure what the first one was, but the last one and current one was a Yamaha XT250. Depending on the country, Yamaha might sell some things a bit different. Here at that time XT’s we’re 225cc. She did her own maintenance work. Assuming she got equal miles out of the 2 bikes, (which I don’t know) that puts them at 125,000 each bike. The guy in San Diego made the comment, the engine sounded completely worn out, yet she still put on probably another 10,000 miles after that. (((Granted, I don’t know if there were any engine rebuilds done, but just doing the math it’s possible to get that kind of miles. If she averaged 25mph for 125,000 miles that would be 5000 hours engine time. I once had a Yamaha 2000 watt generator that when it quit running I figure it could have had 7000 hours on it. So, these numbers are possible. )) When she got back to LA, she was going to just sell her bike and fly home. He said she didn’t see that she had done something all that unusual. To her, she was just on a motorcycle trip. She had taken 6000 pictures. The guy posted some of those pictures on the form. We seen her on her bike in Iran is one I remember. She had saved her money for 3 years to do the trip. She was about 40-42, quite small and cute! Sometimes she would go 2 weeks between baths, and camped out almost every night. A guy from Germany had written in, and said he seen her 3 years earlier in Germany. Coming back from Alaska, all of us had been following her travels via the forum for about a month. Somewhere around Washington state, she just disappeared. All of us on the forum thought she realized she had so many people following her travels, she disappeared for her safety. THAT,,,, Is the reason I bought my 2007 Yamaha XT225.

Nice little video. And I got to see what the inside of the owner's manual looked like ;) Beautiful area. Just curious, you seem to ride a little street and a little trail, what are you running the tires at? I've found that running them a little soft, 15-15, makes up a great deal for the suspension. And really I could go lower in the rear if I was strictly in the dirt. I think mine came 28-25 from the dealer.

My opinion is how much time and money has JOE BLOW spent breaking in a bike? How much time, money & R&D has Yamaha spent on building this bike? I personally go with what the manual says. They have a processing fee, delivery fee, setup fee (I asked if I could have one in the crate and assemble it myself but it is against Yamaha policy) document fee and some others. You can't really get away from them unless you buy a used bike, but they are selling just as much as the new ones right now.

Hey James! The speed isn't really something to worry about. More just varying the RPM. I would get the break in cycles done before really rapping it out. I would do some higher rpms throughout, but not for a extended time.

I want to move to Colorado, buy a TW200, and become an true TW200-adventure rider, just like you. Where do I start? Please advise.

Well Colorado is a great place, but I like Utah better.......just saying! Go to a Yamaha dealership and tell them you want to buy one. Or, get on Facebook and join the TW200 Classifieds page and you will see where used TW's are being sold. Then, buy one and you'll be able to figure out the rest. Best of luck and we'll hopefully see you on the road or trails!

@@uncletom1971 If you live in Utah you can check out the KSL Classifieds as well. Sometimes they show up on there! I have been wanting one of these bikes for years and I finally bought one in 2019. I have had so much fun with the bike that I bought another one last month. I tried to buy used but everyone was asking as much for the used as the new bikes were. So, I bought both brand new from the dealership. That way, they have the warranty and I will know what they have been through and how often there services have been done on them.

Yes, a good idea to buy it new instead of a used one. I was looking for both the Suzuki Vanvan and the Yamaha TW200, but I can't find them here in Sweden. They have carburetors so nobody sells them here due to the emission laws. So I bought a Kawasaki KLX230 (new) which seems to be similar in power and type, and it has fuel injection so it meets the EU emission standards. But watching you ride your TW200 in Colorado seems much more fun, the scenery is awesome.

I had a 600cc displacement twin cylinder race engine built by a pro ( 20 years ago).......his advice was..... oil change 1 at about 50 miles, after heat cycle 5 times min........HARD Acceleration AND decelleration at mid RPM for around 50 miles. then change oil and let it rip. Manufacturer recommendations are written by lawyers! lol kzread.info/dash/bejne/p2tozLukedfKdJs.html an alternate opinion. It is something we can agree to dis agree about, but it is fun! I have owned A LOT of bikes from Harley's to Buells, to "Crotchrockets" and never had an engine failure .

I have watched that video as well! I have seen all sorts of different break in methods but this one hasn't let me down yet. I see the logic behind your tech's advice. There are a lot of ways that seem to work for people and to each their own, but I still don't believe in the "ride it like it is already broke in" method right off the bat. Thanks for the insight and for the comment, I really appreciate it!
