Great vid m8- subbed ya! Feel a lot more confident giving the spine a go now! Also I can highly recommend a product I use to remove glue off steelbooks. It's called Auto Glym intensive tar remover. You can buy it from halfords for £6.50 and its amazin stuff- works in seconds an does not affect the paintwork at all .

BigPauly here's what I want to do. Swap JFK with Game of Thrones S1 and they both have inside artwork. Is it possible to remove the inside art of the spine? Are they just 1 piece together? I want to know cuz I don't want to try if it's not possible. Thx

I suppose I'll have to try this for the first time pretty soon, as I want to improve the FYE Halloween Steelbook by replacing the single disc inner plastic with a 3 disc one to hold the TV version DVD as well as two Blu-rays to cover as much ground as possible in terms of content. I am also getting the 35th anniversary edition to add the booklet. I was thinking about getting an extra copy of the booklet that comes with the deluxe edition set, but realized it would not fit, and whereas I remember seeing one listed on Ebay a while back, they are now nowhere to be found.

I also intend to modify the Scream Factory Halloween 2 Steelbook to accommodate four discs, and use that space for the Terror In The Aisles disc and soundtrack CD thereby making it sort of a Region A Steelbook version of the NSM Mediabook I have.

You might want to keep an eye on the FYE website if you still intend to do one of these conversions, and specifically the Steve Austin Collection Steelbook of which they sell used copies for around $6.00. It is a four-disc Steelbook with a disc holder on each side, and the locking flap in the middle with one disc holder each side of it.

Is there any reason a hot knife could not be used to take off the spine label? If you can avoid touching the actual plastic with it, as you are instructed to do if using a regular X-acto knife, then it ostensibly shouldn't make any real difference other than allowing you to omit the process of heating up the Steelbook separately.

Sorry I'm late to the party but would this method work also to fix a crooked spine? I mean, without even removing it, just heating it up a little and trying move it so it would sit straight on the plastic. Thanks!

  • @Tsadi9Mem9Khet9

I finally tried this and got the knife as high up toward the metal as it would go, and it cut the spine rather than separating it from the glue. Maybe it's some odd Steelbook that is different from the one in the video. It does seem somewhat different from those I've seen in any tutorials on this kind of thing. The label seems like it's made of plastic instead of metal for one thing, and even after many passes with a hair dryer on high heat, there was no getting the knife any higher than I had it toward the label. This was a Steve Austin Collection Steelbook that I intended to use for a 4-disc Halloween Steelbook. I do have one other copy, but was intending to use one for the first movie and the other for the second. I was very careful about making sure that I was perfectly aware of what to do from all the videos I've watched, and also TREMENDOUSLY careful about executing it, but nonetheless, it cut through the spine of the plastic. I have no idea what went wrong.

  • @BigPauly

I’m sorry to hear that. This was a regular technique I used on multiple Steelbook spines. It could be that maybe the hair dryer heat wasn’t hot enough or the knife wasn’t sharp enough, I used a scalpel. These were also just regular steelbooks with metal spines. I did have a few mishaps when I first started so it took a few goes. I would buy a few rubbish dented cheap steelbooks you can practice on!

@@BigPauly Well, I finally did get it off. I just didn't think it would require such tremendous near vision. I do have extremely good natural near vision, but my contacts eliminate that in order to allow me to see things clearly beyond a few inches. Hopefully I can glue the cut spine back together. As for the things suggested, I used a brand new X-acto knife I bought specifically for this purpose, and repeated the hair dryer aspect. It's just a matter of my not thinking that it was so difficult to get the knife into the right spot and so comparatively easy to have it do what it did. And now I have the plastic glued and bound. I used a "super glue" that is specifically indicated for plastics, so fingers crossed.

@@BigPauly Also, despite the fact that probably around a half hour elapsed between the original heating with the hair dryer and my finally going back and taking the label off, once I got it where it was supposed to be, it slid through like nothing without even the need for see sawing it back and forth.

Well, unfortunately the gluing didn't work..........but VERY fortunately, another Steve Austin Collection 4-disc Steelbook for less than $6 appeared for the first time in around a month!! Not only will this allow me to make the 4-disc Halloween 2 Steelbook from the single disc Scream Factory one, but the single disc innards with the Steve Austin metal panels will allow me to make matching part 4 and 5 Steelbooks using magnets!!

@@BigPauly No, I meant attempting to glue the broken one back together. Even binding it extremely tightly for well over 24 hours didn't work. I did buy and use the double sided tape for attaching the label, and that worked perfectly well!! I am also happy to report that the inkjet magnetic glossy sheets that I ordered come out tremendously well,.....at least once the printer is properly set. Clarification of size of the paper being associated with a given medium would have been very helpful in this regard. You would think that with all the instances of graying out of options which cannot work in correlation with others that a computer would not even allow you to wind up selecting contradictory settings like this, but that isn't the case. I noticed that people on message boards had had problems years ago printing on magnetic sheets which were probably matters of EXACTLY the same issue, as it is somewhat odd not only that you'd be allowed to choose settings that would make the printer unresponsive, or cause it to refuse to print and display an error message but that there would be such ambiguity to begin with.

It's actually easy to remove the plastic by hand. It was very difficult when I first attempted it due to the particular Steelbook that I decided to try it with, which is the Pitch Black Blu-ray DVD one, which has the locking "teeth" in a totally different spot on the plastic inside the front cover piece. Instead of being on the top toward the corner right next to the spine, they are right in the middle of the side opposite the spine. Once I realized what the problem was, it was no longer a problem at all.
