Published 6 November 2021
Brett shows you a great method of cleaning the sealed 540 size motor found in many radio control cars. All you need is a jar of fresh water.
Finish off the maintenance by re-oiling the bushes on each end.
This method also works with any brushed DC motor.

I've done this with slot car motors. INOX and White spirit works brilliantly. When I use white spirit I make sure the motor is submerged before running it. No chance of sparks.

We recommend water as flammable liquids can ignite and burn your house down. I know many people that have had fires occur even though they have done so without incident before. Just takes a moment to lose concentration. Not worth the risk. Water is best.

@@HearnsHobbiesMelbourne white spirit isn't really flammable... INOX puts fires out...

Does that not risk rusting out the motor? Could you use and alcohol?

No, there is no risk of rust as the water is removed as soon as possible. Alcohol is a fire hazard.

A light machine oil or a specific bushing oil is used.

Ensure the motor dries quickly and there will be no rust.

Blowing electric contact cleaner inside wouldnt do the trick, would it? (the cleaner leaves zero residue)

Contact cleaner works but isn't as kid safe as water. The water also helps to clean and polish the brushes and commutator.

do not run the motor at full speed but rather slowely as ,,it doesnt give the grit a chance to escape before grinding into the important surfaces before being dislodged

Valid point. Yes, low voltage works better but most beginners will only have the racing pack handy. I think running in at full voltage is better than not running in at all.
